Tokyo normally gets 2 spots because of the size of the prefecture. But this time Tokyo is also the prefecture that is hosting nationals so they get an extra spot as hosts. That spot goes to the 3rd place team.

Haikyuu!! still holds my top 3 favorite anime of all time. I can't explain the excited I get here and its quite unique in terms of other animes whereas you had a villain or sort of alike the building of characters is also top tier, I CAN'T WAIT FOR ANOTHER SEASON HAIXT NEKOMA VS KARASUNO 🔥

Tokyo has a very large population than the prefecture where Hinata is located, so many high schools qualify for the Spring Tournament. Tokyo's eligibility for the main tournament is set at TOP 3.

I'm still extremely salty about how dirty they did to Nohebi in these OVAs - making them snakes first and players second. It's not fair to them. Not even talking about the amount of cut-out parts in the first match - the importance of Konoha for Fukurodani, Fukurodani's overall ability to play at the same level even when Bokuto is not doing well, etc. And of course Yamamoto's mini-arc about why he's Nekoma's ace in the second match. Really recommend reading this part of the story in the manga. They changed the artstyle for the season 4 to get closer to the manga style at that time. If you ever pick it up from the beginning, you'll see slow, subtle changes, but the anime did an actual leap 😄 It brought a lot of glow-ups (especially for Fukurodani and Nekoma) but unfortunately also several downgrades, mainly in Karasuno (poor Asahi) It's also worth noting that there was a 4-year break between seasons 3 and 4 and that a big part of season 4 was done during covid, so the animation quality went down a bit (especially in those two infamous outsourced episodes), though personally, I don't think it's that horrible as some make it out to be.

To clarify a bit about the Spring Nationals qualifications. A total of 52 teams qualify for the tournament. These teams include: 47 prefectural winners. 4 additional teams from Hokkaido, Kanagawa, Osaka in real life but Aichi in Haikyuu!!, and Tokyo because they're big prefectures. 1 team from hosting prefecture, which happens to be Tokyo. And because the Tournament bracket should have 64 teams, 12 teams get a bye in the first round. These 12 teams include the best 4 teams from Summer Interhigh and 8 lucky teams by random drawing. The other 40 teams play in the first round, with 20 teams advancing to second round, joined by the 12 teams getting a bye, making it 32 teams in second round. Then the bracket is even again.

Unfortunately these two OVAs are pretty rushed and a lot of stuff is cut. I would recommend reading the manga for this part (Chapter 190)

As usual, it was fun watching your excitement for the game/show.🐱🦉 There were several comments saying that Tokyo gets an extra venue spot "this time", but actually, unlike the Inter-High, Haru-Kou is almost ALWAYS held in Tokyo, & thus gets 3 spots all the time. Hokkaido, Kanagawa, & Osaka get 2 spots to make the total # of schools participating to be 52. Even for the year (2013) that they held it in Saitama Prefecture instead because Tokyo Gymnasium was having construction work done, Tokyo still kept 3 spots. Since Saitama was given an extra venue spot, the # of participanting teams was 53 for that year. There weren't many iffy translations for this OVA, so just gonna give my personal opinion about 1 of them: 15:35「俺らは決勝いく気満々でした！」→ "We have every intention of making it to nationals!". The more literal translation would be "We fully intended to make it to the finals!". They just played the "semifinals", just as Kuroo mentioned earlier in the ep. So the "finals" here means the game they would've played had they won against Fukuroudani. The game that decides the 1st & 2nd placed teams. Their translation may not be entirely "wrong" since they CAN still go to the nationals by winning the next match, but it's still misleading & not quite correct meaning-wise.

2:22 Essentially, both are right. "Land" in this case, refers to Nekoma (cats) and "Air" (or Sky) refers to Fukurodani (owls).

Also what is funny to me about this episode is that Nekoma uses the same tactic on Bokuto as Karasuno did with Ushijima. Only this time it worked. That is because as they said Ushijima is in theory a higher level spiker than Bokuto.

Regarding artstyle and animation. This season took place while Covid was striking everywhere. So at times, this season fails in comparison to the others sadly. Now that you mention the change in the director, yes, that can be noticed as well. I myself didn't like it, I think the focus of the camera is rather poor at times, but that is just my opinion. Haikyuu has us used to have such great quality that anything less than perfection seems wrong lmao

The art style change has nothing to do with COVID. It was decided that S4 art style would be closer to the manga. The animation, on the other hand, yes, it was affected by COVID. However, only 2 episodes were particularly bad, eps 15 and 19. The other episodes were fine.

@@erict1628 I agree there are 2 episodes where it is most noticable, but overall this style is lower quality than before. Even when it does want to look good, it looks goofy and not realistic at all comparing to before.

I like Season 4 because it was a realistic decision by the animation studio and yet they changed the art style to be more like a manga. I think the change in art style and animation, which feels like a quality reduction, is for two reasons: the influence of COVID and the goal of making the animation closer to the manga. The impact of COVID was clear, as in those two episodes where the work was clearly not up to par. The studio was under a lot of pressure. But it wasn't just that, there was also a dissociation between the animation and the art style of recent manga. This was not so much of a concern compared to the early manga, but because the artist's drawings had grown up. As you can see if you look at the manga, one of the charms of the manga Haikyuu is its sense of speed. The coarseness of the lines and drawings due to analog drawing, which is rare nowadays, is what makes it feel so quick. I think the compromise between the two reasons combined is the quality of Season 4. I used a translation tool, so sorry if it was hard to understand.

In tokyo qualifications, the teams that goes into finals are automatically qualified for the nationals. Tokyo allows another team (2+1) this time because tokyo is the one hosting the tournament. So the teams that were beaten in the semi finals (nohebi and nekoma) must fight for the third place of tokyo qualifications. The winner will join fukurodani and itachiyama in the spring nationals
