Can confirm it was several actual helicopters. My wife and I were on a run by the river and everyone was stopping to ask each other what was going on. We assumed it was vroll footage for the Hudson Yards observation deck, but man were we wrong. The fireworks didn’t even go off for about an hour and half after we got back, so they were filming for quite a long time.
