As someone who worked in radio for 5 years, I can tell you that 95% of weird calls you hear on the radio are fake. I have played several characters on air for my fellow co-workers and they tell me what to say and how to act. Calls are saved and reused by several DJ's and they even have prep sites where audio is provided for weird calls and then the on air host just fills in conversation.

Usually you have the owner (who is usually either super involved or not at all), the station manager, production director (they are who handle like all the sounders and prod), The PD (Who is in charge of individual stations), then you have the hosts usually afternoons nights and morning show host (sometimes the pd and prod director intertwine with morning show hosts and other hosts), the you have the engineers (who fix stuff), behind the scenes you have the traffic director, sales reps, the front desk attendant. That should give you a good start. Thanks for asking

Also i live in a different country, but a comedy radio show i adored (no longer being done, rip Pentagruel) had multiple segments but followed a top-10 type of thing that had absolutely ridiculous themes (that were actually researched). I'm only mentioning this much info because they will use music/film clips to indicate the number they're at, and once used the FUCKING GERMAN NARUTO OPENING (yes, the "Believe it" one) for number 9. Anyway they had a crank call segment sometimes and they never told them they were on the radio. I guess the laws are different. (honestly i just wanted to gush about that show lmao)

My boyfriend does this on occasion. Station will call him up and give him the premise of the character he needs to play, and he’ll stay on the line and wait for his cue and then deliver whatever weird story they ask him to. He makes a decent amount per call and it takes so little time to do that there really isn’t much of a downside to it. Shit is very fake but hey! I guess it’s entertaining

@@elainagilbert7663 the problem I noticed is that they are all given a formula so after a while it gets old. Though every story isnt the same the formula is. The formula is this: A goes out with B B doesn’t call or text back A A calls radio and is like, “idk why. We hit it off so well.” Radio calls B B says “Well did A tell you what really happened on the date?” Radio: :O B will say something outrageous like A believes dragons and wizards exist, A broke into their own home, a guy pulled a gun on them and it turns out it was the best friend of A and they planned it to play hero. (Yes these instances I’ve heard) Radio then says “omg A what” A stands their ground and sees nothing wrong with what they did. B chooses whether they have second date or not. Sometimes they mix is up and give A specific character type like lazy or perky.

Hey! I used to intern at my local KISS FM as part of my uni degree! We had this exact same show in my city and I can tell you 100% that it is absolutely scripted. I can't tell you for Chicago, but where I'm from everyone was in on it. We had contests of who could come up with the craziest stories. Most of them were exaggerated stories about first dates the producers, PAs or just anyone had. I was even an actress in one of them! It's mostly people from the station or the offices around it. But yeah, rule of thumb is that if they don't advertise a number to call them at right after the segment, it's definitely scripted and fake.

You know... maybe the person that is "ghosting" is tasked to invent a story that the first person doesn't know about until they hear it, and then they have to go along with it. The audience listens to a first person talk about a nice date, then listens to a completely fabricated fact that the initial caller has to go along with, and that's actually the show. Listening to them try to piece it together and pretend like the fabricated story is in fact what happened.

I work at IHeart Radio as one of the promotions assistants and I literally cannot count the amount of times me and my co workers have “called in” for the on air talent and changed our names every single time. Not just doing and acting in stories, but even asking questions on air about contests and prizes, I’ve even “won” concert and festival tickets. It’s ALL scripted and in different cities. We called our version of this “2nd Date: Updates” All the on air talents, most of the time shows are not live at all, so if the shows not being recorded live, then no ones in the studio, and no ones gonna answer the studio line.
