actually more crimes are committed with fake weapons with no orange tips than orange ones with. in north america there has been like 1 in the last 10 years with orange tips that were real. but they werent used in crimes but found with it. the fact of the matter is, its done the other way around because when you use a weapon as a criminal it is not for a shooting, its as a use of force, and if you paint the tip orange it is less effective. those who use weapons for shootings go out with the intent to kill and do not need to put the fear into their victims. your argument even in the minds of idiots is idiotic. I have only found a single instance in North america alone where a tip was painted orange and it was seized and not used. in the last 10 years

As a cosplayer, that is unacceptable. You should NEVER EVER point something that looks like or could have any possibility as being perceived as a real weapon at people. And the guy who tackled him isn't at fault. If it looks like a real weapon people will treat it like one, this is common sense.

Did no conversation take place after the tackle? This guy's entire argument is conjecture, which makes it sound like he got tackled, and then everyone just stood up and walked away without saying anything. You're telling me no words were exchanged so that both parties could explain what they were doing, what they were thinking, and clear up any misunderstandings? Not a chance. Also funny how the cameraman just allegedly stopped recording after the man tackled the guy. I may be overlooking this, but if I was recording something and somebody does something like…’that’, there is a high chance I’m going to *continue* recording the whole thing to have evidence if things become a legal issue. They either continued recording the encounter or just straight up decided to not include the ‘context’ of what actually happened *after* the man tackled him. Highly doubt the man just tackled him and walked away afterwards.

Rules for conventions usually are “If it looks like it can be a weapon, it might be a weapon.” One year my husband had a cane for his Tuxedo Mask cosplay, and because the top of the cane had a heavy skull on it, it got classified as a weapon so we had to tag it. If the cosplays have fake guns, and is part of the costume, you can have them so long as you only have them out for photo shots (at least that’s what I’ve experienced in conventions) If the guy was filming outside the con, then people who have no idea the convention is going on, then the person who attacked probably thought it was a weapon orange tip or not. A lot has happened with shootings, and some people are pretty jumpy.

A guest at the hotel (not even a ‘con goer), called the cops & they showed up guns drawn. They cuffed him & did what they need too. He was released, but he was trespassed from the entire hotel & convention grounds. The cops kept saying, they “couldn’t believe how stupid he was”. Dude, to this day. Mr. Duck, I still refer, sort of out of need to give immediate context to the situation, in any case, I call The Aurora Colorado shooter The Batman Shooter. One of the main reasons that he was able to do as much damage as he did was because he had a costume on that looked, to the people in the theater, kind of what one of Bane's henchmen would have worn. When he started shooting, there were some people who thought, "It was part of the show." Now ALL theaters have banned costumes. Granted, if a seven year old dressed like Cat Woman showed up, we might not have a problem with it. But if you dress like The Joker or God Forbid dress like The Punisher, you're just ASKING for trouble. The fact that this guy is trying to make this out to be some kind of Hate Crime is almost offensive if it weren't so stupid. He's old enough to remember The Batman Shooter. Apparently not old enough to have learned anything from that tragedy.

My opinion: Only point it if you know for SURE it's a cosplayer and if they're on board with it. Basically, just ask for permission before you go into character and go all Yosemite Sam. Or, JUST DON'T POINT GUNS AT PEOPLE PERIOD. It's not rocket science. Also, if you are gonna point guns, at least wait 'till you're inside of the convention with other cosplayers, not outside where random unknowing people can see a guy point a gun at a person.

As someone who's cosplayed before (just once as a KH character), you never just wave around a prop weapon in public like that. Even if it's as ridiculous as a Keyblade it could get mistaken for a real weapon if someone sees it at a distance and goes immediately into fight or flight. I couldn't imagine waving around a really cheesy fake blade, let alone a realistic looking gun prop. Especially if your cosplay isn't too cartoony, or could be mistaken for a normal outfit.

In my opinion, I feel like everyone involved are all misunderstood but no one is in the wrong. The guy that tackled the cosplayer saw someone pointing a gun and took action. We definitely need more people with that amount of heroism, however, he needs to work on analyzing before taking action. If you see someone dressed like that and moving like that, he should’ve put two and two together and realized it was fake. No real shooter is going to walk and point a gun like he’s an NPC in a video game. Also, there’s clearly a person recording him. The guy shouldn’t get any hate, he just acted on instinct. Now, for the cosplayer, he didn’t do anything wrong. He was just trying to record a quick video for social media. His advice is good too, if you know you’re going to make a video with props like that, you should make sure you have people to stop others and explain it’s fake. However, he definitely should’ve done it way closer to the convention. Also, I agree with August, he is delusional to think he got tackled for being a cosplayer.

And this, friends, is why there are actual RULES regarding filming in public. Sure, most people can take out a camera and do whatever in public, but when you start having props and more than 2 people involved, it legally enters the territory of a production and requires permits in most places...for this very reason. Most cops won't care, especially if its a bunch of dumb kids, but the moment you start being so negligent, it's a whole different issue. It makes me crazy how braindead people can be.

I'm not defending him but I'm not saying the guy who tackled is completely in the right. There's always the question of what happened after the camera turned off. Did he apologize for acting on instinct because the cosplayer explained everything afterwards or was the cosplayer getting defensive and verbally fight with the guy who tackled him??? Also the guy who was recording didn't have his hands up like someone would when having a gun pointed at them. Maybe since I'm not American I can't really relate to the gun violence thing, but... In order to make a TikTok, someone has to be filming. Also there was his friend behind him. Not to mention his outfit wasn't that of someone that would try to shoot at anyone in the middle of the day, AND they were next to a cosplay convention. So how the fuck did this happen? Even if all the "I've been attacked because the guy hates cosplayers" argument is false, how can someone be so dumb and out of touch with reality to attack someone when the guy filming the TikTok and the person behind didn't react to him first? And if you're response is "well, it's the USA, anyone can have a gun and point it at someone, it could've been a real gun!" then maybe it's time to change something. Everytime there is a gun involved it seems you like to point the blame on literally anyone or anything except the easy access to guns, which is honestly a hundred times dumber that anything the cosplayer has to say

That’s because you’re not looking at it from the outside: it’s called empathy, putting yourself in the person’s shoes. Let’s see what the stranger saw: 1. He saw a guy who looks casually dressed up, pointing what looks to be a live firearm. The cosplayer wasn’t following any “rules”, if he did, he wouldn’t be waving around an item that could be perceived as real in public that’s clearly a block away from the intended area. It is always stated to wait until you’re inside to do that sh!t for photos. The only rule he followed was having a small orange mark that’s barely able to be seen. Guess what also? Not everyone is gonna know what an orange tip means. 2. You only have seconds to react/ascertain the perceived threat. Most likely this was an obvious fight or flight moment for the person. I shouldn’t have to explain this sh!t as it’s common sense to disarm the threat as soon as possible. You don’t have the time to ask the person to stop if you think sh!t looks real. 3. If he really hated cosplayers, why didn’t he attack anyone else there? Why only attempt to disarm the guy with a prop gun that looks completely like a real situation where mass shootings take place? Why didn’t he continue to beat him down when he had him on the ground? I’ll tell you what happened: it was a misunderstanding, the guy most likely apologized for the tackle, and that’s why he didn’t include that in the video. To fool people and make this selfless act look like an attack. I’m sorry, but this man did what he felt was right: he felt threatened and thought he saw a threat.

Then it finally hit me, I can't relate to this, because my country doesn't have a lot of gun violence. If I see a person walking around with a gun, it's most likely going to be a fake gun. So I'm wondering if the positive responses he's getting on his account are from people from other countries who just don't have the same instinctual reaction.

Bruhh… I’m not a cosplayer, but as a viewer of the video… it seems very obvious that they are cosplaying and creating a fake video… there is a whole camera man and they are dressed in exaggerated clothing and the guy holding the gun wasn’t even facing the camera man. He was looking side to side. And the girl was walking to a beat… I think unless you’re stupid, oblivious, or ig a boomer this should appear very obviously fake😑😑☝️🤷‍♀️

I once had a cap gun. It was stylized as a civil war musket as it was sold at a gift shop at a re-enactment battle as a toy. It looked, again, like a musket. It had an orange cap. My dad still made absolutely _certain_ to sit me down and say he didn't want me to ever be playing with it outside pointing it at people and especially not to remove the orange plastic cap. He made me, rightly, understand that everyone else in the world has zero reason to believe it is not real. The orange cap means little. There isn't much stopping people from putting it on a real gun after all.

The "because I'm a cosplayer" argument is weird and I also think the other guy overreacted as it seems obvious the group was filming. But I don't live in an area where gun violence is a common thing and I know when there is a con happening so I'd be more likely to reach any conclusion before an actual shooting.

There was a post by the girl as well, and added more context. The guy had been standing to the side and saw them all talking to each other and knew they were filming. He waited until he was beside him, then the thing he threw in his face was the girl's garter that she tossed in an earlier clip they filmed. So it wasn't like he came in and thought the camera guy was scared.

I would say there is some nuance to this situation in that there are countries with stricter gun laws where people would always assume that a gun is not real. I remember a couple years ago in Hungary I saw some teenagers playing with pretty realistic fake guns(airsoft or something) in a mall and nobody cared. So while I would never blame the man for overreacting or "hating cosplayers" this is very much a product of the USA's gun culture and complete disregard for common sense.

My take on the video is that both sides were stupid. It was stupid of the Cosplayer to go pointing the prop gun towards other people even though it was for a TikTok, the convention is somewhat nearby but at the same time it's somewhat out of the way. However, at the same time, WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU TACKLE A RANDOM PERSON WHO APPEARS TO HOLD A GUN? That's asking for an injury at best. The guy is lucky that A) the gun was a prop and B) if it was real, that the person was in a Cosplay/convention mindset instead of just some lunatic.

The guy is 100% in the wrong, but still I feel like it would be pretty easy to not see him as a threat. For one thing, the convention makes it somewhat obvious (Edit: This is a rather weak argument but I never intended it to be the main one and I should have made it clear. Several people have pointed out that not everyone will know about the convention and that's absolutely true). Second, the orange tip on the gun is usually a pretty good indicator it's fake. Finally, the camera man. If someone is being held at gunpoint they aren't going to record it and slowly walk backwards, they're going to have their hands up and be asking to not get shot. I believe the guy is absolutely in the wrong, but even then attacking him isn't the best move without first observing the situation a bit more.

Boggles the mind that in 2024 someone would think pointing a gun at someone in public was a smart thing to do as a "joke". How to not end up like this idiot? How about don't think that a public street is your film set. A movie production gets a permit and works on a closed set when they're doing something like this for their movie. If you can't afford to do such a thing ... do it on private property you have permission to be on.
