I spent 4 years in the USAF in the mid 70's. The F-16 and the F-15 were just being introduced. The mainstay fighter at that time was the F-4. I recall them showing us a film of a F-4 and F-15 taking off on parallel runways at the same time. The F-15 got in the air first, accelerated and shot straight up to 10,000 feet, did a loop and dove on the F-4 just as it was lifting off from the runway. They've only made it even better in the 5 decades since.

Although I was in the Navy, the F-15 will be my favorite aircraft of all time. I was around 11 or 12 when I went to an air show and I saw the F-15 do it's air show. For me it's still the most amazing machine I have seen in action...especially the going literally 90 degree vertical immediately after take off until you couldn't see it anymore. Most planes would stall. That show, this plane is what got me interested in science and math and the military.

I was driving across the Lake Worth bridge near the Joint Reserve Base next to Fort Worth, Texas one afternoon when an F-18 flying low over the water approached the bridge. About 100 yards away from me the pilot suddenly turned the nose of the plane straight up. It took off, literally, like a rocket, the exhaust churned the water up as the jet surged upwards. The sound was deafening, and glancing up I could see it was still vertical though by now it was probably at least 1/2 mile up. It was really cool to see!

McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma, aka, JBLM, was home to the 318th Fighter Interceptor Squadron known as the Green Dragons. Every year the base would put on an airshow free to the public. The 318th would have a mock demonstration of an intercept mission where one of the F-15s would start rolling at the far south end of the runway. By the time it was at the halfway point it would already be airborne with gear up and full afterburner. As it passed show center it would pull straight up, the flames from the afterburners would hit the runway as it rocketed straight up and out of sight in just a few seconds. Sadly the 318th disbanded in the mid 80s, some aircraft ended up in Portland. I still miss seeing them at the shows.

I can't say that I have a top three, or even top five videos of his. I love his videos too much. Because I'm from Texas, I really enjoyed his battleship Texas video. I have to say that his videos on the mosquito and the British fighter Ace from world war II are outstanding, and if you want some good old-fashioned British patriotism, I would watch those. Another fun one is the submarine that sunk a train. Apparently, that really happened. If you want to know about some war heroes, there's Sergeant Dan Daily, The ghost of baton, and Jake McNasty McNeese. Some really funny ones are the ones he does about the different weapons platforms, IE America's a blunderbuss, and the one on the Colt 1911 pistol. All of them are really good though. Have fun! I really enjoy y'all's videos immensely and can't wait to see videos of y'all visiting the USA, especially Texas. I also can't wait to see you guys reacting to more of the fat electrician.

A new American fighter made largely with foreign investments, YES!

So, I'm gonna be that guy. To start, the mach 2.5 he's talking about isn't 1,900 mph, it's closer to 1,650. The speed of sound in the air depends on the temperature of the air. The speed of sound at ground level is about 760 mph, so, if you multiply that by 2.5 you 1,900 mph. But, F-15's max speed is reached at about 36,000 feet off the ground (because of air resistance and the amount of air available to generate power), and the speed of sound up there is about 660 mph. So, multiply that by 2.5 and you get 1,650 mph. At ground level the F-15 can do about 920 mph (or, about mach 1.2). Also, the F-15 cannot lift off the ground without wings, but, yes, once it's off the ground it can accelerate going straight up - as long as it's not carrying to much fuel and ordinance under it's wings and body (all of which add weight). The engines combined can make about 47,540 lbs. of thrust (depending on conditions), so, as long as the airplane weighs less than that, it can accelerate in the verticle (going straight up). Subsequent F-15 models make more thrust, so they can be heavier and still accelerate while verticle. Are we having fun yet? Personally, I LOVE this kind of stuff! I'M A NERD!!! TFE made other mistakes, but, I'll stop here. Besides, he's mostly right.

One of only two major US airports that share their runways with a guard unit. It is breathtaking, to say the least, to see F15's come off of the runway and then immediately go near vertical. It may have changed since I was in the Air Force, but I have not seen anything online that indicates there has been any other to achieve this ability. The F-15 was/is the only airplane that can ACCELERATE going straight up. That's like a space rocket for cryin' out loud. Think about that for a minute, accelerate, gain speed, in a pure vertical attitude. That's powerful.

If you want to learn about a some other planes with some other shorter videos, I would recommend his videos on the A-1 Sky Raider and the A-37 Dragonfly. These planes plus the P-47 Thunderbolt, could be argued as the early development of the A-10 Thunderbolt II, AKA the warthog, in some design elements and its close air support role.

As an F-15 crew chief in the '80s, I would have to agree it's gangster.

I've actually seen an F-15 go vertical after takeoff. Very impressive. I'm pretty sure we still have some F-15s in the UK.

As a former USAF crew Chief from 1984 to 1988 I can tell you he's not totally wrong. The F 15 is the most overpowered fighter of its day and its combat record is amazing. However if you mean Gansta you have to give THAT title to the F 4 Phantom II. In the late 50s the USAF, Navy, marines issued all kinds of specs for specialized aircraft to do numerous different missions. The airforce had the Century series fighters from the F101 thru the F106 and the Navy had a similar group of specialized aircraft. Along comes the F4 Phantom II. and promptly the Navy falls in love with it. The aircraft that proces the theory if you put enough thrust on a brick it will fly. Then the do joint exercises with the other services and wow the F 4 starts whuppin ass. In fact it was so damn good the Airforce immediately says wow this jet can damn near do EVERYTHING. Poof the multi role fighter was born. And the Airforce orders it in bunches. In Vietnam the only reason the F4 had the losses they did is because the tech weenies forgot that missiles don't always work so you need a gun. Enter the F4 E with is 20mm cannon. In short the F4 basically replaced damn near all.of the century series aircraft and those were SUPPOSED to be 3rd Gen like it was. But it was so far ahead of them it was insane. The F15 was a continuation of what they learned from the F 4. Only even better. But the Gansta that took over the military because it was so damn good none of its 3rd Gen contemporaries could compete with it. The USAF kept using all of those century planes until they were pretty much replaced by F 4s. They all did their jobs well but the F4 did them all too..gansta...

A bit late since it is after Christmas, however his Toys For Tots video is great. When he gets to his favorite Christmas story, I can say it is totally true because it happened while I was still on active duty.

He has a lot of great videos. I would recommend: - “The most gangster marine of all time” about Dan Daly - “The last warchief” about Joe Medicine Crow - “America dismantles pirate nations” about founding the US Navy to fight Barbary pirates - “The biggest logistical flex of all time” about the Berlin Airlift

My father was a F15 bomber (its been build into fighter-bomber versions) and I have teased him that he has never flown a plane for the US Air Force and is no aviator. He's a rocketship man =D

Since you are from the UK you should react to: RAF's Legless Antihero - Sir Douglas Bader. Nick's stated favorite video is: America's Airborne Anti-hero - Jake "McNasty" McNiece. I love all the long form videos he has been creating but World War Tree - Operation Paul Bunyan is hilarious, America Stole a German Submarine and Stuck It In Chicago is mind blowing, both the Berlin Videos are inspiring, and the Barbary Wars episode is the historic beginnings of the US Navy and an epic video!
