When the Hamiltons were having a hard time providing a visual language of their look and feel, Ben was quick to act on helping them out draw that by looking at several stylescapes you guys have done. The vulnerability, raw emotion and thought process of Ben and Matthew sort of gives us a comfortability level that it's not going to be perfect all the time but you can always be creative to deviate from the norm and go with the flow to get the destination. One of the things I love the most about this show is how you don't only show the backstage of the branding process, but also backstage of filming of backstage process. Oooooh gold dust, gold dust everywhere. It's the little moments of nuance and hyper-specific detail that are of such immediate and poignant value that I'm extra-extra-gratetul for. Today's biggest takeaway - right now anyway - is what to do when we hit those blanks and run into a cognitive wall: what questions to probe with, how to come in from a fresh angle, how to garner new inspiration and perspective in a swift moment. Thank you everyone - behind the camera etc too - for this rare value and behind-the-scenes arms-wide-open sharing. You're all stars.

@@MatthewEncina Oh gosh you're so very welcome Matthew and thank you for your question. Well among many things - and I'm not sure if this is a bit of a no-go area - but I'd love to see how the initial agreement is set, in terms of value agreement, metrics for success and engagement criteria or milestones. I understand if that's off the menu though! And for where we are in the process, I'm very much looking forward to seeing how you manage the flow of communication and strategic decision-making through to your design team (and in what format the team experiences client interaction and feedback).

@@MatthewEncina Of course, that's entirely understandable!! Perhaps a representative roleplay at some point would be amazing, but here, what you're doing is perfect and what's so great is to see real world deep dives into processes that can at times be ambiguous without context. So many designers I know, myself included, are crying out for conversational and facilitory expertise to learn from and emulate. Thank you for all Matthew

Can we just stop for a moment to appreciate the excellent editing in here. I love love your process! This is probably the best discovery session I have ever seen. The clients seem to have fun with the building personas and the conversation flows in a very natural yet genuine but not generic way. The way you hone in on the real meat of the target market and goals is excellent, you lead the customer to bring this information (that they may not even realize they know) up to the surface with a very clear lens. The way you restate is also very good, not redundant just clarifying. Amazing work guys and way to make it look easy even though I know it's not. Marty Neumeier once said, "“a brand is a person's gut feeling about a product, service, or organization." In addition to that you must put yourself into the consumers shoes. It is wonderful to get a peek behind the doors and I greatly appreciate content The Futur produces. Although I do want to share my observations since I facilitated a similar session. 1. The client seemed laboured and tasked with coming up with words, I believe it is the designer's responsibility to keep them at ease so as to not make it feel like an interrogation, by using more prompts, examples, vocabulary aids, games etc.. 2. A lot can be solved by asking "Why they do what they do apart from commercial intent". I think a lot more time should be spent on that - The Purpose 3. It is important to include an element of the future (Vision) at the start of a branding process since defining customer profiles before the vision might lead to a brand that is build based on the present scenario of technology, infrastructure etc.. 4. Customer profiling in the case of this business could have been done more efficiently by gathering actual data from the existing business. If the actual data is deviant from what the made up personas then it is an important insight that could dramatically shift brand direction. My two cents. I understand that a lot has been edited out for KZbin which might address my observations, so this is for anyone this information might be useful for.

Hey @Matthew Encina and @MrBenBurns! Like everyone else, this brand process series is amazing and was exactly what I was looking for. I'm a huge fan of The Futur and I always put into practice your tips and they always bring me great results. I've been designing for a while now and have worked my way into doing brand strategy without even noticing I was doing it. For the past year, I've noticed I'm doing more marketing than design and any design project I get, I send it to other freelancers. I've been studying a lot of brand strategy and it's an area I want to improve in. Definetely when it comes to finding who my clients target audience is. Right now, I have a huge client that they hired me as a sub contractor to run the marketing department for their custom homes company. I just had a brain storming meeting with all the big dogs you can say, and I don't think they knew exactly how to describe a demographic of their persona or client. The only thing they said is a homeowner that can afford the custom homes they sell. I would like to know how you research to find the target audience? Where do you go? What tools do you use? I want to provide them 2-3 ideas of their potential customer. Sorry for the lengthy comment!

Good pace on this one to be able to think along with you and them. Showing that the client needs time to think and roll up the profiles without just having them. Not sure they didn’t just pick their own self or friend though. But with the things named makes next stages better and can adjust them.

God help me , you guys are great (Matt & Ben) I am loving up'ing my knowledge on branding process (although we all roll differently ) but this is so amazing , it helps I further my skill with detailed consults aka discovery with my own clients - especially the MOST important questions to ask a client in regards to their business & ultimately getting to the HEART at who they are , why they do what they do , what moves do they want to make in their market & what makes their customer tick! THIS IS LIFE thank you! Saturday night & I am putting together another proposal & if this one is also accepted that will be booked out for June! You guys are a hugeeee part of my education &, lovepicking up what you put down xx Loz Chai (Australia) xx
