"We're all puppets, Laurie. I'm just a puppet who can see the strings.” -Jon "Doctor Manhattan" Osterman
There's been a disturbance in the DC multiverse as of late. Space and time itself seem to be in jeopardy through the actions of a mysterious meddler from beyond existence, and many fingers are pointing to the nigh-omnipotent Doctor Manhattan. The truth...? Yeah, that's proooobably right, but in his original story, the good doctor was just a simple matter manipulator among street heroes. The entity DC is dealing with seems to bend reality to its very will with no clear limitations. Could this really be the work of America's quantum superman from an entire franchise away? Studies suggest the odds are once again on our side! But this time, it will take more than science to explain away our newest god on Earth! A dash of philosophy, a pinch of String Theory, and one solid origin story courtesy of Tyler and The Imaginary Axis! Just what the doctor ordered!

@@savp.michaelangelo There was no other choice; Ozymandias' victory was preordained. Dr. Manhattan isn't "powerful" as we conventionally understand that term; he can't change the Universe into something it shouldn't be. All events in time are already written, all of Manhattan's actions already done, it's just that he can see it all at once, unlike us. A puppet who can see the strings, just as he says.

Dr Manhattan is definitely one of my favorite superhero characters and not because of his power (un)limits. I actually prefer the characters that are more closely relatable to us as human beings. Superheroes like Daredevil, Batman, The Punisher, etc. They are reasonably limited and that creates more suspense for me. As for Dr Manhattan, I think that he's is relatable in a different way. Of course he has god-like power, but he was born human and he struggles with the same existential crises that people do. He feels the way we might feel under his circumstances. Not being able to experience time? That's rough, buddy. No wonder he might be depressed and longing for something more in a multiverse. He represents the paradox of our human drive towards longevity or immortality while also being overwhelmed by eternality. Dr Manhattan also symbolizes our drive to uncover and marvel at mysteries. He was a scientist and tinkerer. He liked to take things apart and see how they work and can be put back together just like we do with objects, stories, and reasoning itself. He is naturally a human being warped by godly power and it shows. I like Dr Manhattan because of the questions his existence begs and the experience one of us might go through in his shoes.

It's actually not. It's a TERRIBLE analogy. The antenna would be your actual body that broadcasts the signals to your brain. Without your body broadcasting those signals (sight, smell, taste, touch, hearing), your brain can't interpret shit. Your interpretation of your surroundings isn't just beamed into your brain by an outside signal from a 3rd party source. No. YOU ARE THE SOURCE.

He could also just cut and paste himself wherever he wants. Hes essentially a self aware AI within the watchmen computer simulated universe. @@silversteve-o68 Its not that he doesn't have the power to change time, he does. but what happens he realizes after changing several timelines (similar to flashpoint) is that for everything you change 10 worse things come into existence that wouldn't have happened if you hadn't interfered. In other words he could change everything if he wanted, but then would be 100% responsible for everything. This is the best breakdown ive seen and heard. Almost forgot this is a comic character. The way you started out with chemistry, the physics of his properties and the neurological parts of his brain still being responsive is amazing especially for the writers. I mean theory wise you prolly could make a machine that seperates atoms to the point a object no longer exists but to my knowledge its too technical this day in age. I mean if it is or was done shit we're talkin about teleportation especially if your able to disassemble and reassemble atoms .. anywho good explanation.. AND Religious wise.. this is an example of what god is. not form but being able to create life, look into the future and experience the present at the same time without himw being effected by time, space, and location...

One point you missed was that Jon Osterman was both a watchmaker and a GENIUS PHYSICIST…meaning that once his consciousness was elevated to a higher plane, he actually understood enough about how the fundamental forces worked to manipulate them effectively; this means that while he’s a wiz at shaping and reshaping matter, he doesn’t have that great an understanding of existential things he can’t pull apart into their constituent parts, like Ethics and Morality; ie, he often has a hard time figuring out WHAT he should do with his phenomenal power; in matters outside of Physics, he’s still just a pretty smart, awkward guy; it’s his greatest weakness…

Dr. Manhattan is a puppet. He is such a sad and tragic character in Watchmen. In the book, he makes no major decisions for himself. His father makes him become a scientist, he accidentally locks himself in the chamber, he is used by the US govt. for war, he unknowingly gets set up by Ozymandias and exiles himself on Mars. My point is.that everything happens to him and he never guides his own life.

You misunderstand Dr. Manhattan. None of us are in control of anything. That is the entire point of his character; to reveal this fact. We have choice but those choices are the result of circumstances that we did not choose and can not control. The factors aren't even fixed, they are inherently probabilistic. Every choice you make sends you careening into the results of other choices, probability, and effects. No one guides their own life, not even Ozymandias.

Theres one thing you got wrong: That we had nothing left to explore if we are the pinnacle of existence. Thats basically the abstract concept of omniscience, which is in itself impossible to achieve. Because even if you know everything, you still cant know if everything you know includes everything that is. Because if there is something which you can not know, cause you cannot perceive it or it is for whatever other reason outside of your realm of comprehension, well, then you would not know it. And if there is nothing that you dont know, you still can not be sure of that, only believe in yourself that you really are, omniscient. So even at the pinnacle of existence existential philosophical questions would still be existing. Also if you are equipped with omnipotent powers, you could literally limit your knowledge, experiences, perspective etc. to once again experience new stuff again, and repeat that for eternity.

In the Intrinsic Field Subtraction Process, as stated in your discussion, only the known fields are 'inverted'. Those patterns are the product of theoretical, calculated, imagined and suggested thought and are built into the mechanism of the machine. One possible thought image could be that Big Blue is not just the candle in the dark but is also the shadow and the darkness is another form of candle. The central point is time but Dr M is set to Time Zero, the only dimension shared by all change or realities and is looking out from that unthought of state. Probably.

That explains why Dr. Manhattan chose to interact with and finally enter the DC universe. Because it's a universe where he can change the past, present, and future. Dr. Manhattan is a commentary on absolute power. He is omniscient but is only one being, no matter how powerful he is. He can see a multitude of futures but only one in which Humanity survives and he is free. In Spider Robinson's short story "Five Sight" from his _Callahan's Crosstime Saloon_ anthology, the central character has similar problems. A guy can see the future, but it traps him into a series of events that must happen in order for the future he will-see/sees/saw to come true. The _Dune_ series has Paul Mua'dib get fenced in by his own powers and hero status and how his existence corrodes and corrupts everything he touches. In _Children of Dune_ and _God Emperor of Dune_ , Leto II Atreides used his powers to create hatred and fear because he loves humanity and sees the ruthless Golden Path he needs to walk to save it from extinction. Dr. Manhattan foresaw Ozymandias' long-term plan (including Ozymandias' campaign to discredit him). He acted in a way that limited his choices, locking him into predetermined events. However, he doesn't stop Ozymandias' conspiracy or Rorschach's investigation and exposé - granting them free will and freedom of choice. Ozymandias' horrible crimes do relieve the Cold War started by Dr. Manhattan's appearance, but it could become a world-ending Hot War if Rorshach's journal is published. Dr. Manhattan is now free to leave, maybe becoming god to an Earth of his own making (or a rebirth of a re-imagined version of the destroyed Earth). So he had the power to control events, but it wouldn't have led to his desired outcome. Dr. Manhattan has godlike powers, but cannot save everyone. He can only do a limited number of things at once. Also, he is paralyzed by his limitations. He constantly knows about a multitude of people who need his help at every moment - but who deserves it most? When should he act and when should he ignore pleas for help? Is the crisis event preventable - like a careless accident that harms or kills multiple people? Is it inevitable - like a natural disaster? Or is it eventual and necessary - like a sickly or elderly person succumbing to a fatal heart-attack or an aggressive infection? Also, if heroes are expected to help everyone, what does that do to mundane society's attitude towards disasters and crises? Is it their job to save everyone all the time or is it everybody's job? Do heroes inspire others to act or do they encourage others towards inaction? The superhero bait-and-switch is that Dr. Manhattan, supposedly a mixture of Captain Atom and Martian Manhunter, represents Superman. He is an alien with immense power - why should he care about mundane humans and their concerns? There is a question posited about him in the series - "do you prefer red ants or black ants?" He is more fascinated by a diamond's atomic structure than by the people in his life. He also cannot clearly explain his thoughts, intentions, or actions to humans because of his alien intellect and perspective. Even if he could, it would cause a divergence from his carefully prepared path.

@@t0xcn253 Well, they were initially going to be based on the Golden Age DC Justice League of America (Batman, Superman, Black Canary, Martian Manhunter), but DC didn't want to sully their characters' brands and public images. It would have deconstructed their Golden Age and Silver Age personas, pointing out and magnifying their flaws. They were later rewritten to be similar to Charlton Comics characters: Mr. A & The Question = Rorschach, The Peacemaker & Yellowjacket = Comedian, Captain Atom = Dr Manhattan, Miss Fury = Silk Spectre, Blue Beetle = Owlman, Thunderbolt (Peter Cannon) = Ozymandias. Mr. A was always a reactionary paranoid with a Manichean outlook and The Question was the less intense version. The Question's friend and partner Blue Beetle was the optimist. Silk Spectre was more like Black Canary than Miss Fury. The elder Black Canary was a tough but mundane human vigilante who trained her mutant daughter to follow in her footsteps by giving her rigorous training in the skills she had to learn the hard way. Silk Spectre I gave her daughter something she never had the chance to do: be a superhero. Silk Spectre II never had to work a mundane job or rely on a man for anything. The Comedian seems on the surface to be like The Peacemaker, a selfless patriot. He is actually more like Yellowjacket, a man who gained his powers from being hurt (stung) and whose body altered itself to protect him from harm (His reaction to a Yellowjacket's sting made him immune to toxins, gave him armored skin, and allowed him to control insects). The more the Comedian gets hurt, the more he withdraws and the more introverted and bitter he becomes. There's also a bit of The Joker's nihilism and Deathstroke's amoral mercenary ethos. His early costume is identical to early Yellowjacket's yellow boilersuit and the final leather costume he wears is a fascist parody of Captain America's (Deathstroke's Marvel Comics Universe reverse-negative). He's a deconstruction of both superheroes and The American Way. He's selfish, corrupt, self-hating and bitter. He's an anti-hero in the sense that he's a literal ANTI-hero who actually opposes and sabotages his fellow heroes in an attempt to drag them all down to his level. He even helped turn Ozymandias into a villain by mockingly calling him 'the smartest man on the cinder?', inspiring Ozymandias to come up with his murderous long-game plan. Dr. Manhattan is kind of like a mix of Captain Atom (an American USAF fighter pilot who became sentient radioactive energy kept inside a metal-foil bodysuit after an "event") and Martian Manhunter (a shape-changing alien who has an inhuman intelligence and powerful mental abilities). Dr. Manhattan is really a thinly-veiled deconstruction of Superman. If you had the power to help one person or group of people in danger or need in a split second, who would you help? Why would you help them over all the others? Should you interfere or should you let people help each other? Why should you care about humanity at all when you barely understand them and have nothing in common with them? Ozymandias seems to be like the mystic action hero Thunderbolt, who used the martial arts and Buddhist meditation to reach his maximum potential. He's actually more like Bronze Age Lex Luthor, an industrialist who seeks to destroy Superman because of his insecurity. Lex Luthor spent his whole life striving to be the best he could be in every way, but Superman effortlessly is better than him at everything BY DEFAULT via his alien physiology. Ozymandias is actually a Nietzschean deconstruction of superheroes. How can ordinary people judge the actions of exceptional or godlike beings (Ubermenschen)? How can you apply conventional morality to their actions, especially when they accomplish a greater good - regardless of how selfish and petty their motivations were?

As a side note, since I don't see any mention of it in the comments at first glance: To me, the best argument of why mind-body dualisme, and other 'soul'-like claims in the realms of "you being you", is most likely incorrect is that we have studied casses of people who had head injuries that lead to them changing character. Or in other words "you not being you anymore". Which makes quite a strong case for the assumption that any mind is the product of a physical brain. It does lead to entertaining stories though.

But obviously that would "destroy"/"alter" the other particles or what they supose to be. And well thats what exactly doesnt do. He Simply Bends 3D Space, its actually a pretty common and "easy" thing if ur 4D or beyond. The end of Interstellar is a good example of how that works. ur "everywhere anywhere" because Time is just another Direction. you could Walk (aaaall theoretic Physic here and realy simplyfied) straight and the "time" (as a direction) goes normal if u go back its backwards. whats the other sides? Thats the thing thats 5d and beyond its mutiverse. Basicly going right left or w/e makes the same time but in another parralleluniverse. basicly "another option of it". Simple 4D Objects show how Gravity bending works. Basicly if all 3 dimensions (space) are one line ur able to "walk" freely as in if i walk in that direction im at that position ots exactly as he states it he is "everywhere" he doesnt see stuff like we do. its like a coordinate cross with 4 axes 2 axes are able to do 2 Dimension with 3 lines u can do cubes and with 4? thats just the time factor so he "simply" moves in simplified form, as just putting his (X) on another point in the coordinate system. I hope that was easy reduced (but i think most people researching dr manhattan (as he is not powerwise, but the way he "is") already know it) but i wanted just so people could understand what infact "infinit more power" means.

Great video, from what I gather, he's still not all-powerful because he still has to learn. And even if he can manipulate all things, create atoms and multiple universes. He's still one being. His apathy could be his greatest weakness, not having an aim or goal. When you believe that you, the apex predator, the same can become hubris with the advantage; forgetting, that the opposition has nothing to lose.

In recent comics a Jokerfied Batman known as The Batman Who Laughs, was able to completely take over Dr Manhattans body and gain his powers, he proceeded to create an entire evil multiverse. Some of the characters from that multiverse are several evil Supermen and a Lois Lane that stole Superman's powers then killed him along with every hero.
