No one does reviews like this but you TMF. It's one of my favorite things about you - totally practical and even handed. On my GenII 2013 Street Triple R they have rubber caps on the swingarm pivots. I use the same ABBA stand you have and it is details like you pointing those little caps out over the RS's pivot. Also, detailing the light function... just real world stuff that truly matters to someone that owns and uses their bike rather than this almost universal fascination with track oriented HP ratings and acceleration that everyone else gets wrapped up in and not much more. Thanks for doing what you do.

I have owned a 2020 RS for 4 months now. Amazing bike. I rode the KTM 890, Z900, MT09 SP, ect. Nothing had the polish of the Street Triple. and the looks do it for me. only two small niggles, the bar end mirrors vibrate above 60-70 MPH , and at its normal operating temperature it puts off quite alot of heat.

That headlight has got to be wired improperly, there's no way that's working as intended. Great video as always, love how you bring the day-to-day stuff to attention, instead of just focusing on performance and what have you.

I think that its pretty clear what they have done, they have gone the route of the sequential gearbox, i believe that the reason they have done that is due to the fact that if you are riding with full beam on and you have to flick to dipped beam and vice versa it would be easier to push the control the full direction one way or the other when riding without any fiddling to get it to the "mid" point.

I can only assume TMF didn’t take this above 8000rpm, because believe me, once you do, the 765 engine is miles faster than the previous model. Certainly on a similar level to the Daytona. That’s from experience too. The R model has the more usable down low torque but this thing is more “peaky”. Very addictive.

The light switch is correct, the down position is dipped beam as it shows via the symbol and push forward for the daylight running lights. That symbol is a light with dotted lines. It shows on the dash only when drl’s on to remind you. Works great on my triumph.

Took a test ride on one of these today, couldn't fault it really, awesome looking, light, good power, however just didn't gel with the bike, gear lever probably needed moved a tad, but found i was thinking about negotiating bends etc, although a lovely sound up the revs, found the engine sound annoying at low revs, so just a personal thing, also tested a Yamaha MT10, immediately felt at home, for a big bike it was like a baby in traffic, easy to filter and extremely comfortable, but then you have awesome power on tap. So easy to go from toodling around in traffic to r1 performance. Loved it.

Yet again a top review. I love the little detail. For example as an Abba stand fan, the tip about the swing arm pivot plate would be useful to know as it adds to the faff when popping it on the stand for cleaning. Laughed my socks off when you mentioned about being all in Triumph gear at the garage. Tart I thought (with the greatest respect of course) especially as that's what I'm like😀😀

The padded pillion seat (which is included with the bike, don't let them swipe it from you) has the strap. I covered the ambient light sensor to stop the auto switching. I do think they should have had a screen with coolant temp + trip/odo + miles left all at once. The drl switch is the right way around ... you don't need a dash light to tell you the main lights are on, you need a dash light to remind you only the drls are on.

Had mine now for 4 years and i love the bike but it doesn't come without some serious issues that unfortunately triumph are just not interested in. The minor issues are that water seeps into the left grip and it starts to swell. The exhaust placement is an absolute trouble to clean and the tyres the bike came with aren't meant for the street roads in my opinion. The amount of recalls on this was alarming as was the state of the brembo pads which i had removed because they had corroded. The biggest problem however was the quickshifter. After 2 years it stopped working, it had completely rotted the sensor to where it was actually dangerous to ride the motorcycle, it would perform a jerking action as if it was being engaged when you were riding, it had the potential to cause an accident or worse. If you cornered and this happened, it had the potential to throw you off the bike. What's worse is a replacement can go the same way and you have no choice but to. You can't remove it and replace it with a gear rod or the motorcycle will dish out a warning light and put you into limp mode. It's frustrating that what is supposed to be an accessory on other motorcycles can intermittently wipe this bike out altogether. Triumph seem to want to be oblivious to it and if you didn't have a trusting sense of understanding or know anyone who did that serviced your motorcycle, then Triumph are quite willing to put you through the rigmarole of charging you 800 quid to go through a procedure which can be identified by anyone who is mechanically sound enough. I didn't expect after sales to be this bad but hey ho, i was lucky not to fall into their trap. Other than this major issue i do love the bike. I like the way it sounds, the way it handles, the complete versatility of this bike when fitted with michelin road 5s is absolutely outstanding. I love the fact its easy to maintain and its just appealing to the eye. Especially the colour in this video, which is the one i have. I don't think i would of gone for any other. About the looks, the biggest set back now is that this is the last model you'll fall in love with, because fron 2019, this 765 has gotten ugly and from 2021 its depressing. I took a trip up to my local dealership and saw the 2021 edition of the 765 and me and one of the staff both agreed that triumph are very excessive with their decals. They are plastered with them. So much so they have 765 decalled plastered on the rims , as if you wanted to know what cc your bike was just by looking at them. On the body of the motorcycle the raised triumph lettering has been replaced with the insignia you find at the front wheel arch on the 2017 model. It's in all of its laziness just a sticker slapped on the tank as are the 20 other red lines going up through the body work. I also don't go fondly on the new colour schemes, which are glossy silver and no longer matte, but i guess that's personal preference and they've re configured the headlights again which doesn't do it much justice from the front either. I'll keep this model for as a long i can, it's unfortunate i won't be looking into buying a street triple ever again after owning 2 previous models. I love the way this is built, i love the feel of how it rides but i think with all the recalls and the issue I've experienced with the quick shifter, i can't help but think Triumph are definitely cutting corners. To me that's only adamant from their drive to drag the arse out of updating the 765 3 times since 2017. So much so they've destroyed the look and integrity the street triple once had.
@GB600RR
@GB600RR Жыл бұрын
thanks for your detailed comment, I kind struggle more to buy one, I was advised to look for 2017 and up. even so many disantvadeges, i even can't think what is the alternate model for Triple, I drove once and still feel how shocked i was when i even sited on it, so fluffy, light i can't find words, can't describe turning, cornering. I guess i'm in a trubble. it's a second week of searching and watching auctions, checking photos and some kind thing in my back telling me, you may regret, but on the other side, my soul just wants to have it.
@joshuacoomber48

@@GB600RR Another alternative with be Yamaha MT series. Thats the closest you'll get to the street triple, but I personally wouldn't buy one. The Yamaha MT is out matched in everything the triple offers and it's one hell of an ugly looking bike. My advice is to buy a 675 model. No problems with any electronics and it's just a beautiful piece of machinery that won't be hampered by all the Chinese electronics Triumph are into these days.

In Norway, lights are mandatory all day, so in cars and on motorcycles, they're all set to on-running-on instead of what you'd expect: off-running-on. Not sure if this has anything to do with your bike, but for me the switch seems perfectly normal if I'd get the bike here.

the user manual on speed triple r 2016 (which has the same lights) says that a) there's no error - the green light on the dash indicates the DRL ("daylight running lights"), which is the LED parts only, so that is how it is supposed to be b) the high beam button works as a passing light when in the DRL mode is enabled from the manual: High Beam Button When the high beam button is pressed the high beam will be switched on. Each press of the button will swap between dip and high beam. Note: • If daytime running lights are fitted to the motorcycle, the high beam button has additional functionality. If the DRL switch is in the daytime running lights position, then press and hold the high beam button to turn the high beam on. It will remain on as long as the button is held in and will turn off as soon as the button is released.

Hi TMF, Great review! Had my bike a month now and loving it. In regards to the headlight switch being the wrong way round, there is a reason for it, the light on the dash is actually labelled in the manual as a DRL (Daytime running Light), this is so you know that you are in DRL mode if its dark out. If you have it the other way round, there thinking is that it may alert you to the fact your in the wrong lights. Or so my dealer told me.

Still seems illogical to me!
@christhomas6373
@christhomas6373 7 жыл бұрын
Oh I agree.... Does seem odd. But that is apparently the reasoning behind it... I have found that you can tell, light on dash or not if you have the wrong lights on. Common sense that one, but I guess some rule/law for it.

Great overview sir! Couple of points I want to touch on that you brought up. 1 - The buttons and their feel. That is one of the things I love about my 2015 Striple, is the very positive feel of the clicker. You know when you have indicated, and canceled. No faffing about. 2 - The lights. I like the new design. For people that really love the old dual headlights, motodemic makes an awesome looking pair of round headlights for our generation of Striples (a bit pricey though) 3 - The power. That really surprised me! Glad you touched on it. One of the only reasons I would switch to the new one. Have you ever ridden the MV Agusta Brutale 800? I would be really curious to see how the new Striple compares. Thank you MissendenFlyer

I see that others have said the light indication makes sense how they've done it - anything other than "standard" lighting gives a notification. I have the 765 R - didn't want quick shifting as should you end up using a bike without it you're asking for trouble. Also the R has a pillion seat. I've not experienced the glare you mentioned with the TFT. Also there is a temperature gauge on the coolant section of the TFT (I'm sure it's not for the amount of coolant as it's in Celsius) .

Hey Missenden! I'd like your input on something if you have a moment. In short: I own a 2013 Honda Shadow Phantom. After market exhaust and seat, love it to death. Great sound, very comfortable, fun to ride, etc. It's the only bike I've ever owned. However, I potentially have the opportunity to pick up a 2014 Triumph Speed Triple R with less than 2,000 miles for $5,300 USD. I've never had the opportunity to ride a Street Triple, but just based on what I've seen online and in person has made me very interested in the bike. As far as I'm concerned I have three options: 1) Keep the Shadow, ignore the Triple (great for wallet, still happy with Shadow) 2) Sell the Shadow, buy the Triple (almost a wash in terms of money. Sad because I lose the Shadow, potentially happy if I love the Triple as much as I think I will) 3) Keep the Shadow and buy the Triple (worst option for wallet and storage space, but good for the soul). I know I'm asking for your input/opinion with very little information, but do you have any advice or thoughtful words on which course of action, if any, I should consider taking? Is the Triple as incredible as everyone says it is? What are the positives and negatives of owning two bikes, particularly of different types? Thanks! -Fissure

The light on the dash is on when daytime running lights are being used. This is the same on my 2017 speed triple.and I think is meant to be this way as most people like myself ride during daylight hours and I think the DRL's are better seen during this time. It does say in manual it is this way. Keep up with excellent videos you do ! Loved ya Scotland ones 👍👍

Turns out that the version of the RS sold in the US does not have the DRL switch and the discussion on US Triumph forums suggests that it is not a light switch but is instead a daylight running light switch, i.e., it's purpose is to leave only the daylight running light illuminated. Since turning off the headlights and leaving only the running light illuminated is not allowed in the US, there is no need for the switch.

Great review and really enjoyed it as i always do with yours. one thing about the power. At first, i am an owner, i felt the power at lower revs was good but not dramatic improvement (i had a daytona previous to this and a str before that) while running in the bike. After run in though i discovered its a much more powerful and very fast bike once you get above 6k rpm and hang on at higher revs :)
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 7 жыл бұрын
Yes I imagine the additional power is top end...but what's the use of that on the road? I'd rather they'd spread it lower down the rev range for real world use.....

Valid point. i hear the r model does this. you might want to review the dyno mcn did where it showed actual hp of 126 and lb/ft of 59. For me though the power is better than my 2014 str and the handling and fueling on the new bike is vastly better than previous version which was quite snatchy on off. Brakes are fantastic and the rear shock is excellent compared to the hard rock the last model had. the headlights are also a big improvement in performance over older version of str

In reference to fuel, you should always use premium fuel (97/98 Ron) as they have very low or no ethanol in them. 95 Ron fuels have 10% ethanol in them, which could be rising in content. Ethanol can damage plastic components in the fuel system, and can cause swelling in plastic fuel tanks. There was a mention of it in July's ride magazine ( page 81), funnily enough the article is about triumph speed triples.

With the headlight light on the dash I am sure that is the same with the GS... when just the daytime running light is on there is the green light on the right of the dash, when the main lights go on that light goes out... the only real difference is we just have automatic lights or a push a switch to turn on the lights and not the toggle the Triumph has.

TheMissendenFlyer, basically my 2008 has high mileage and generally seen better days as i used to commute on it 365 days a year regardless of weather. And thus it has very rusty bolts and down pipes. Think i just fancy something new that i can keep in pristine condition now i work in oxford but live in yorkshire i commute in my diesel car now.

Worth the trade? I love my 2010 ST3 R . I have other bikes cycle through the garage since (currently a BMW RS) but the 2010 is the bike I never let go of and always feel like its my BFF - just feels like home to me. Its the only bike my body seems completely at peace with, and except for the tingling in my arm after a few hours, the rest of my body, BACK INCLUDED, never protests. And its the bike I grin the most on. Always feel like its the most fun, but the price to pay is wind fatigue and rattles on un-smooth roads. That said, always wish it had a bit more growl, a bit more bite and most importantly, a bit more plushness on the rough roads we tend to get around here. Does this buy all that without sacrificing that rider position I have never been able to emulate despite all the mods on any other bike? More plush, less vibration, and more mid range (4-7ooo rpm) and the same riding position? Any other major differences we should be aware of? Despite being partial to the '10, this is a beauty, except for that rear cowl. But id stick the seat and a kreiga bag on that anyway. Thanks for the video - great as always and much appreciated!

Lights must be wired wrong as my bike is the other way round, when you switch them on and the light is on the dash the daytime lights are off and dipped lights are on. There's a strap on the pillion seat that you don't have, for your glasses lol. And you just click the light switch quickly twice to flash your lights 😉
