The closer I get to retirement, the older I get, the more I feel the need to simplify and retreat. I could sit in front of that window for hours on end, sip my coffee and be silent. You're living the dream my friend, you're living the dream.

Hope you get to do that, I had some good sitting time up there the last few weeks.

Loved this Martin,my brother in christ.Seen the Bible by the new window some time ago and figured you belonged to the Lord. After hearing that old quartet sing ,now i know it .Daniel Steele Lake Station Indiana.i put 44 years in the steel mill near Gary Ind and am now retired. That song made me cry like a baby.

This brought tears to my eyes, Cabin in the Corner is one of my mother's favorite gospel songs. Not just that, reminded me of how fortunate my brothers and I were to have grown up on the edge of my gr grandfather's forest, so many good memories.. like waking up to the still, peaceful quiet of a deep snow in the night, you know it, feel it, smell it before you opened your eyes. The frost crackling on the top quilt from the condensation of my breath. The fast dash down to the living room where Mommy would have our clothes warmed up by the wood stove. Washing face and hands in the spring water she'd heated for us as well.. The gentle mumur of their voices in the kitchen mingling in the air with the smell of Mommy's cat head biscuits and Daddy's strong sweet black tea... We were such fortunate children. After chores, we'd drag this old car hood up the mountain, it had more than plenty room for all three of us to sleigh ride it straight down the long shutes gr grandpa had cleared and dug for the logs. Those were the days!!

TheNorthwoodsman1 Thank you, Sir. Yes, we certainly do need Many more families like the one I was fortunate to have. And we need them Now. All I can do preserve mine in words like my comment here and in the stories shared with my younger kin. My parents taught me so much and all of it has served me well,.. common sense, courtesy, perseverance, frugality & so very much more.. but the best of all was Love!! Blessings

Truly a blessing Martin! This touched my heart with memories, even though I had not had them until watching this. I can't believe it was less than 4 minutes long! I just watched #28 (OK, actually #67, 41, and 28!). I've been a fan for a month or two and keep coming back for more. This will now be a warm memory for me too. And the poem was fitting and excellent as well. May the "Old Off Grid Log Cabin" remain full of love and friends, warmed, fed, and protected by the Lord until He calls for us!

@@TheNorthwoodsman1 hey Martin,,, what relative is going to carry on at your place in the woods when your gone..??? You have to be careful who takes charge of it, we don't want them to turn it into a chicken coop or firewood..or worse... We love you there in it.. but was wondering if you had a relative lined up to take over feeding the birds and working on the trails.. I was just wondering is all...

HELLO DONT KNOW WHY it popped up 4 me to watch but so glad it did I've watched almost all of your video's so far, hope you have lots more to post for us to watch. this reminds me so much of what i did from age 17 out of high school till i was 49 at that time we had 10 to 20 people/ friends go north & we camped out in the woods rain/snow didn't matter we were there. as i write this & I'm 57 now I'm the only 1 left ALL & i do mean all but 1 have passed away from one thing or other. in fact may 2015 i was told i had throat cancer , 7 weeks every day of radiation & 1 per week for chemo & I'm still kicking but not very high because i can barely walk need a walker & a mobility scooter, knees are gone need to get them replaced & all my ligaments did to get fixed also. so thank you for bringing back GREAT memories for me & a few tears filling sorry for myself. stay safe, have fun b/c life is short

I guess it has been a long time since I saw this one. It was nice to see the changes and improvements come along. I lived in a log house in the mountains of NC from birth through about 7 years when we moved to CA. The house was built by my Pa Murphy. My folks moved in the day before Pearl Harbor. I was born about two years later. I loved the house and the property. The Blue Ridge Parkway is located just up the mountain from the house. I love log houses !!!

The picture is a straight down view of the bear print and my size 13EEE shoe. No photoshop, just a Black Bear track that is really big for the species. We arrived at the cabin a few days after the break-in and slept lightly with guns at the ready. The joke was that anyone getting up in the night had better wake all the others before tip-toeing outside to the outhouse.

The wooden piers the woodshed is built on are Tamarack (American Larch.) It is a very rot resistant wood used in a lot of bridge applications. I did not use any treatment on them.
