Here's my theory as to why 😊moms and dads i hope this helps, im always brake things down to simple logic and common sense through my own experiences id like to point out that our bodies are designed to adapt right? Its simply muscle memory! Lots of time in repetitions 😮example, Usually in the legs hence the name restless leg syndrome! You've simply trained your body with such repetition until it literally becomes an subconscious irritant 😅lol! Mine was my years of soothing my lil brothers who were soothed or often e ntertained by bouncing with quick precise leg jerks! Til i discovered it became oddly soothing to me until it had no more use than it became a nuisance! And a habit is only as hard to break as it is to aquire! Once you realize whats causing it you'll quickly find amusement in un learning this phenomenon lol! Hope it helps someone, and remember if you're ever sitting next to someone on a plane,bus or Dr's office ' Yoll remember this ask them just dealing with baby recently huh? You may help a stranger and possibly make a new friend! Your welcome Usually the answers are right in front of us but we're complicated when its often very simple! 😊

How about Fabry disease as an underlying cause? Its definitely underdiagnosed and can lead to premature death. So if the person has kidney issues, cardiovascular or peripheral neuropathy (also can be misdiagnosed as Raynards disease) then it could be Fabrys. The pain, burning in the feet can be a sign of it. People need to look it up before having a gin and tonic to see if they or their family members have symptoms.

Please everyone, do yourselves a favour and ask your doctors for either: pregabalin, gabapentin or gabapentin enarcarbil. These medications have been scientifically proven to work well for most people, without a big risk of side effects. I would not advise taking the other medications that deal with this called dopamine agonists. These come with a high risk of augmentation (a problem where the medicine can eventually make the problem much worse) I am advising this as a qualified nurse but also as a sufferer (ex sufferer now!) of (was severe) restless legs. I take 100mg of pregabalin (branded 'lyrica') and problem solved! No more restless legs!

I've suffered from restless leg syndrome and periodic limb movement since my very early twenties and I'm 72 now. It has severely affected my sleep for years. I've found that three things seem to make it much worse. 1) If I have roo much salt that day, it will definitely trigger it. 2) If my legs are confined at all such as sitting in a movie theater or on an airplane or as a passenger in a car. 3) This is an embarrassing one, but if it helps anyone else I'm willing to share it. If I don't empty my bladder completely before going to bed, within a short time after going to bed or sleep, I will begin to feel almost like a tickle in my urethra and it's as if it immediately triggers a nerve near there and then the restless legs start right up. When I get up and empty my bladder, even if it's just the tiniest amount, the restless legs stop and I can go back to sleep. I know it sounds crazy, but it does seem to me that it's that nerve being triggered that seems to bring it on. This condition is beyond annoying and being so sleep deprived makes getting through each day extremely difficult. Most doctors just look at you like you're nuts, but it's getting better now with doctors being more familiar with it. I do take a Magnesium Glycinate capsule before bed. Good luck to all of you trying to cope with this, and if my comment (although embarrassing) helps even one person, then I will be happy. ❤

I'm a life long sufferer from RLS as well. As a very athletically active person, I have found that its often related to the post exercise tightness of muscles ( hamstring and gluts ) pulling on the lower spine and creating a mild irritation on the nerves that feed the lower body. Usually after sustained long days of sports. The brain is sensing that its the legs but its reacting to the nerves from the legs being squeezed by the tight muscles pulling the vertebra tight and punching the nerves that feed the legs. My RLS twitchiness is my brain interpreting a signal from the leg nerves and moves them in response, trying to relieve the pressure on the nerves though it is actually coming from the sciatic ( SI) area as those nerves pass through that bottle neck of pressure at the SI joint. Inflammation or dehydration also cause the same issue. Over doses of Sugar often makes it worse though it feels slightly different. After a full day of fitness , when the RLS is driving me crazy, I often just get up out of bed and stretch the hamstrings and gluts for 5 minutes and it gives me enough relief to get to sleep before it tightens up again. My partner reports that the twitching eventually comes back and happens about once every minute or so until I go into deep REM sleep and my brain turns of the neurological impulses to the rest of the body. Stretch, hydrate, take your electrolyte or essential minerals supplements, avoid excess sugar, and good luck. I've been meaning to try Iron as I have heard that helps.
@traceybanting3952 Жыл бұрын
Iron definitely helps. I think it’s why women in their final trimester struggle with RSL, as babies take what they need, to the detriment of mothers to be. Try it, it’s amazingly helpful, I promise. Please you guys, do yourselves a huge favour and take either pregabalin (75mg and upwards at night) or gabapentin, or gabapentin enarcarbil. These medications are scientifically proven to work beyond doubt and are now the medical 'gold standard' or number 1 medication of choice for this problem. The vast majority of people don't suffer side effects with these meds and the risk of augmentation is very low indeed (augmentation is where taking a certain medication could make the problem worse, beware the 'dopamine agonist ' type medications because they have a higher risk of augmentation). I have quite severe restless legs and I now take pregabalin 100mg at night, with no side effects, and it has 100 per cent taken the problem away. The soap under the bed is just a placebo effect, in other words, if you believe it works, it just might! Or 'mind over matter'. A couple years later I mentioned this to my family practice MD and he said its probably low iron. Well I thought yeah right he is just blowing me off and doesnt want to prescribe anything for it. I tried iron supplement for a few days maybe a week and it worked !! I was never severely anemic but always in the low iron range and all the doctors said my iron was in the normal but just being in the low normal range brought on this awful restless leg syndrome. Give her a megadose of b-1, along with magnesium and a vitamin-b complex. I'm guessing your daughter likes sweets or eat a lot of carbs, say rice, bread or pasta? Protein and fat are vitamin b-sparing. While sugar and carbs deplete them. So the body responds by shutting down the leg muscles a little bit, or anything it can to save energy. If vitamin b works, it's pretty much a given that her diet is the cause of her rls. Giving her more fat meat and less carbs would be a long-term solution so that it doesn't come back once you've resolved it. Someone mentioned iron supplements helped. The spinery mentioned b-9. Could be anything but replenishing the B vitamins is worth a try. Try nutritionist Elliot Overtun to learn about megadosing b-1.

@@sushisuzanne99 Before modern times, humans ate 80% animal products for over two million years. That's meat and milk. So that's what I would recommend anyone. There is no need for any supplements if you eat like that, but since we've parted from our natural diet people fall ill. All plants contain toxins to defend themselves from being eaten, when we eat plant-foods the body has to work hard to neutralize all the toxins. Fiber can't be digested, it is an inedible part of plants. The less fiber the better. The best thing for the stomach is meat and fats - almost all of it is absorbed. Try having only meat and fat for a day and see how your digestion is, I guarantee you will feel just fine.

I’m 42 with severe RLS and I started taking ropinerole, a dopamine promoter, about 5 years ago and it works great. I do believe it’s genetic. My mom has it and I remember feeling the symptoms of it as early as 10 or 12. Was very occasional when I was stuck in back seat of family car for multiple hours on a trip. But it wasn’t all of the time. Didn’t start to become a problem until I was mid twenties. Got a worse and worse as I went through my thirties until finally I went to a neurologist because I couldn’t even sit down to watch a movie anymore.
@berylwatts3647 Жыл бұрын
I used a dopamine agonist for many years, prescribed by a neurologist. It is similar to what you are using. Sadly, after 6 years restless legs returned. I had reached that stage in the treatment, where augmentation occurs. Augmentation is when the medication begins to fail, and worse, begins to CAUSE those very symptoms it should be treating. I'm not trying to upset you with this, but nearly everyone reaches that stage. This treatment is no longer the front line treatment for restless legs. I've been trying to give up my medication, but the withdrawal symptoms are truly awful. I joined a forum called Heath Unlocked, which supports and advises all people with Restless Leg Syndrome. I truly hope you never have to suffer what I and thousands of other poor souls suffer from using this medication.i would suggest you Google Dopamine Agonist medication for restless legs, and read the latest research for the disease from the Mayo Clinic. I wish you well.

I experience this all the time and the best way I could describe it is as if somebody was tickling your foot and your leg and you were unable to stop them or unable to move or do anything about it. It feels like that. In my case I go to sleep just fine but I wake up every few hours or less with this symptom and there's no way to stop it except to get up and pace around the house and do a bunch of squats and other exercises that make the muscles burn and then try to lay down and fall back asleep before the nuscle burn wears off.

I call it “ Early rigor mortis”. Only happens at night in bed, starts with numbness in the feet, pressure in the calves and general ache/ pain in both legs. I flex my toes up and down, get up and walk. Helps to sleep on my stomach with one leg bent up, but a bit hard on the face and neck. Magnesium has not helped. Being very active during the day is helpful, but not always possible. Now 78, had it for at least 15 years. Taking Ibuprofin lessens the pain, but I won’t be using it daily. I also have arthritis in my hips, hands. Will try the bar of soap, tonic water, and folate and compression socks maybe. I am tall, so often sitting with hips below the knees. Thanks for that too. Restless Leg Syndrome isn't limited to the legs. I have it in my shoulder. I took one of the prescription meds for a while and it seemed to work, but, the med made me fall asleep randomly even though I wasn't tired. One afternoon I came home from work and made a cup of tea. I sat down on a chair in my living room and picked up the hot tea to have a sip. Next thing I know it is 30 minutes later and I'm holding the now warm cup of tea inches from my lips. What if that happened while driving or 20 feet up a ladder at work? I have been drinking diet Tonic Water for years so apparently that isn't helpful...at least not long term. I still like it though. It is a refreshing thirst quencher. I've been living a Keto lifestyle for 4 years. I have used Arnica Gel and rubbed it into my shoulder and upper arm and that seems to help a little. Exercise seems to make it worse. My Dad used to get his leg going like a sewing machine. He mostly never realized he was doing it.

I've had RLS for most of my life. I usually get RLS at night when trying to go to sleep or wake up with it. I feel it mostly in my feet, and sometimes in my legs also. I discovered the association with sugar years ago, so I try not to eat sugar in the evening. My husband likes to have ice cream at night, and if I join him, I will pay the price later. The soap thing also seemed to help, seemed like it helped more if I could touch it with my feet. I was thinking that the sensation of feeling the soap with my feet redirected the nerve signals so that the RLS went away. Another thing that helps is to put Diclofenac Gel on the bottoms of my feet. Usually helps within a few minutes. I'm going to get some magnesium spray to try.

I’m 67 yrs old and have fought RLS all of my life. Doctors don’t seem to understand that RLS is not just in the legs. I have symptoms in my arms and shoulders as much as in my legs. When I was younger it would wake me up so I would do 50 pushups and quick jump back in bed. That would help for a couple of hours, then I would wake up and repeat the pushups all night long. I think applying the pressure would help. If I could find a position where there was enough weight on my arms, it would greatly reduce the discomfort. At least enough to fall asleep. Any ideas about how I can manage it ?

I have cut out sugar and flour (at least MOST of the time), and I keep electrolytes at home. My nightly routine is Hyland’s Restful Legs PM and dissolve under the tongue. Then I use essential oil mixed with MCT oil and rub my calves and the bottoms of my feet. Aroma Touch with DoTERRA is one and Soothing Massage from Revive is a little cheaper but works well. If I’m still struggling after 30 mins or so, I get up and take a scoop of electrolytes in an 8 oz water container. I only drink about half and it really relaxes me. We’re all different but I hope this helps some of you.

I had a little fall going on two weeks now. Landed on the carpet, on one knee. It was more of a sliding motion versus a bang! Little sore, but no biggie. About three days latter the leg got really sore and by the fifth day the pain was unbearable. I went to the emergency room, I thought I might have a clot. The leg was terribly swollen and hot and red. Cellulitis, can you say pain? I was given an anti biotic and some pain meds and told to follow up with with my doctor. Also, X-ray and ultrasound both were good. At my doctors yesterday, he had the nurse wrap it, which had some type of medicine. Oh it felt so good! Cooling and helped the pain. For the last two nights I have had restless leg in that leg only. Don’t know if it’s due to the wrap (it’s not too tight) or the meds or just my luck! For me, all but 2nd of the five symptoms apply to me. My restless behavior is due to my ADHD. I've never noticed it brought on by periods of inactivity. What happens to me is, if there is a stressful situation I am going through, the chances are very high I would have restless leg. This is not uncommon. This disorder is definitely due to genetics in my case. Both parents, all siblings, and all of our children. 3 generations effected so far in my family. My dad suffered terribly without a diagnosis, (there was none), until after his death. I suffered for 2-3 years before the disorder was identified and certain drugs were able to help it. Before that, I was constantly prescribed sedatives. All those did were knock me out in my head but my body kept on moving. Falling down the stairs was always a concern. I now take gabapentin and for the most part, I have a lot of RLS free nights. It is an absolutely horrible disorder to have, and there are many different levels as far as severity.

I agree. They have mentioned caffeine as a likely contributor. BUT I love my black coffee. I only have 1 or 2 in the morning and I stop by 9am. I used to have 5 to 6 a day a few years ago and could sleep and had no RLS symptoms. As I age (now 48), I am forced to eat more natural, healthy balanced diet, almost no sugar, take supplements, don't drink alcohol much (maybe 1-2 a week at most), reduce coffee (which hurts the most), and I even workout at the gym up to 2 hours per day. Even then I still suffer some nights quite terribly, but with some nights of relief when following this consistently. Too much caffeine, or sugar, and my night is ruined. I guess aging is what it is.

Iron supplements help me but I had low red blood cell count. For inflammation I suggest a food sensitivity test and learn what triggers your inflammatory issues which will be different for everyone. Inflammatory disease patients should look at PMG therapy to introduce a new target for the antibodies so these antibodies relax attacking one’s on cells/organs.

Iron deficiency is a pretty well established cause. This also likely explains the higher prevalence in women. The latest thinking among sleep medicine doctors is to target a serum ferritin to 75 before rulling out iron deficiency as a possible cause. One proposed mechanism is that iron is a substrate for dopamine synthesis

@roxyiconoclast Жыл бұрын
@@Beautiful_soul999 ferritin is just a type of stored iron in your body. Your GP can test your blood for ferritin level (not the same as low iron overall). To boost your ferritin level, you just need to take iron supplements (but ask your doctor to test your ferritin level once a year at least, as high iron poses some health risks). Iron supplements can cause constipation or other GI upset, so some trial and error may be needed. This is one brand I have used: Solgar Gentle Iron. It takes a while (maybe a few months) for your ferritin to build to the right level to prevent RLS. Good luck!

If i try to keep my legs still the most i can do is 4 seconds of not moving them until i feel like they are going to combust on the spot. Im now able to go longer periods of without the jerking now, it becomes worse in mornings and at nighttime . Is this a part of akathisia ? Iv had 18 months of that since being taken off pain meds. It's very much part of withdrawal from certain medications. Its strange how gabapentin actually made my RLS alot worse. Drs don't seem to know much about side effects of gabapentin. I’ve had this since my teen years, and have gone down the drug road to control. I still take a low dose of Elavil, which seems to help, although not resolve the problem. Truthfully, the best thing I’ve discovered is taking a very hot bath. I’ve gotten into the bath at 1:00 in the morning for about 15 minutes, and once I return to bed, I immediately fall asleep. After almost 50 years of dealing with RLS, soaking my legs in very hot water (as hot as you can stand it, don’t burn yourself) solves the problem completely. Good luck to you all.

I have a condition called CRPS and I get the restless leg feeling all over my body. Thank you so much for this. I know Solar Flares and some strong full moons have a definite impact on increasing the sensation. Garlic, too is another. Melissa tea and Passiflora help me a great deal and keeping an eye on magnesium.
@thekat268 Жыл бұрын
Garlic increases it? I've been taking "Heart Drops" that is mostly garlic juice. The RLS has increased

Solar glares and strong full moons gave affected me and my whole family. I don't keep track of either but I find out after a bad night what has happened.
@i.ehrenfest349 Жыл бұрын
So your cprs doesn’t manifest in pain, only in RLS? If it’s all over your body (mine is, too) it may be akathisia rather than RLS.
@i.ehrenfest349 Жыл бұрын
And yes, full moons make it much much worse for me, too. So does changing weather. There’s an explanation for the latter one.
@debramoss2267 Жыл бұрын
@@i.ehrenfest349 it's agonizing everywhere, this is just an electrocution on top of it all. Spasms increase which means my skin rubs on the bedsheets, too and I often seize up into a cramp that can be there for days, sometimes a couple of weeks over this last Summer. I get it internally too, throughout my abdomen. My friend recently passed from cancer throughout her chest up into her sternum and she didn't know was there, because the CRPS masked it. It's indescribable. Do you get fractures easily, too?

I took Alprazolam (first time) on a flight from Bangkok to Melbourne. Had the worst restless legs imaginable for 9 hours straight. I can’t take any anti-emetics or antihistamines. I’m taking Pregablin and it’s helping somewhat.

I have restless body syndrome where the feeling continues through my legs and chest. One thing I've learned is how things like benadryl,vistoril and even phenergan really make it worse. I'm willing to try anything.

Order Padma from Amazon. Worked for me after 11 years of suffering.

When the RLS comes, take the foot that has it, and Pinch hard between your big toe and second toe and hold it for at least a full minute. This often works for me.
@thekat268 Жыл бұрын
@@cannotbeshaken7889 wow! I will try this the next time it hits. Padma (herbs) will shut it off but recently I had to take some steroids and RLS turned on full blast and nothing turned it off. Padma only needs to be taken a few days before bed and it stops it for me for weeks or months. Thanks for the tip.

Perhaps someone has researched cannabis and has isolated that which works to eliminate the spasms, but from what I read above it doesn't work for everyone.........

May I make a simple and sweet suggestion: I had this condition for a while. It really got bad, and I would wake in the middle of the night & then I attributed it to stress. When I taught school I had it real bad. That said, here's what worked for me. A heavy pillow. Tuck the leg that has the problem under the heavy pillow & sleep. It not only worked, but gradually CURED my problem!! I used a really HEAVY pillow for a while, and then lighter, and lighter. & heavier when needed! (Meditation HELPS too (because it basically helps you handle the stress), but if you can't go that route, try the pillow method. If I had known the "bar of soap" method I would have tried it. If it ever comes back, I'll try the bar of soap for sure!? Needless to say, I'm NOT in favor of medication/drugs (quick fixes, that have lasting side effects)What I call "Fix now, repent at leisure"!? PLEASE TRY THE PILLOW METHOD, Stuff some heavy blankets or such into a pillowcase to make a pillow that works. Be Well, Xoxo. You sound like a kind and compassionate man who cares. Hope you don't mind my posting this on your platform.

It typically occurs at the nap hour, and if you are in an environment whereby the room conserves heat too well, then the best approach is to do a before nap time workout routine of your choice for an hour and also remember to keep the dry air out during the summer the best way you know how or winter time using the thermo control with the "fan" control setting on "auto" fan setting simultaneously and not "on". Dry fan air will dissipate at auto setting, and it's good for the lungs when you do your workout out in your room at night before bed. That's my conclusion and cure after 38+ years, too. It seems that at this age, it is the gold standard age experience I've noticed. Human evolution wasn't meant for energy saving high-tech rooms, which trap dry air in rather to the contrary outdoor experience. Who even gets cured off of restless leg syndrome on a couch rather than outdoors doing stuff and then napping in the forest somewhere. I am serious about this. It's a cure on my behalf in every season of the year and counting. My time for a workout is at the 12 mark to 1am. It is cold outside to open windows and dangerous too. unpredictable too if you live with your loved ones.

@@dididiedrich8592 for some perhaps but for others tomatos being of the nightshade family can and do cause an inflammatory reaction. In most people it is so light that they remain unaware for many years. Many people do not put it together in their head.. what actually is the cause of their inflammation.
