Was faced with this choice literally last week, and left the dealership with a 2021 CX5 GT Signiture. The CX5 definitely has more space in the rear seats, which is one of the bigger items on our checklist. The CX5 also IMO looks so much better, although I seem to be in the minority here. The CX5 is the best looking SUV in its segment and I have never been a huge fan of the pseudo-wagon/SUV vehicles like the CX30, GLE, X4 etc. The CX5 drove quieter and was slightly more comfortable too. Not worried about the lack of sportiness. If you want sporty buy a sports car, which is why I have a matching Soul Red Miata RF in my garage along with my new CX5. CX5 all the way! Edit: Topher this is now the 2nd vehicle (Miata RF the first) I have bought due in large portion due to your reviews, thanks for your info!

We just drove a rental '21 CX-5 around New England. 2.5L NA and FWD. Even with it having over 20K miles on the clock and apparent signs of abuse (door dents, jerkiness in the tranny when cold, Florida plates) it had no slop in the steering, good low-end grunt, tracked accurately and rode smoothly. And it got 31 m.p.g. on tbe Interstate AND easily hauled 4 large heavy bags and 2 people. Even the seats don't cause back/butt aches. This is the best and most fun compact crossover I've ever driven. I now see why all the car mags have been salivating over this one for years. Can't wait for the straight-6 version in a couple of years.

Spot on. Wife was eyeing the CX30 for many months; went in to buy one, walked out with a CX5 Signature. It's hard to convey, but the 5 just felt *nicer* and more well-packaged overall. The CX30 Premium Plus felt like you were paying a LOT for a 'cheaper car,' whereas the Sig felt like getting a less-expensive, higher end vehicle. Rear leg room and cargo room were much improved, all at very little MPG hit. We're loving it. And while there, I couldn't resist a test drive of an MX-5, and yep, gotta get one. Went from a 2018 CX5 to a 2021 CX30. After 5 months, traded back to the 2021 CX5. The CX30 is basically a version between the CX3 and CX5. If you have a CX5, you don't want to go down to the CX30. Smaller trunk space becomes noticeable after a bit, and getting in and out was a little more difficult. Always kicking the door panel with my foot and having to duck ones head. Miss the charging port in the trunk that the CX5 comes with. The 30 can only be equipped with a class 2 trailer hitch, where the 5 can use a class 3, which allowed the pulling of a tent trailer. The CX5 2021.5 model comes with the updated info screen that is in the CX30. The larger screen is nice, especially for the gps maps.

A simple electrical feature that Mazda should've thought of so the person behind you doesn't mindlessly start to go when they see your brake lights off.

Love my Cx-30, definitely wanted the new interior, and more fun to drive car!
The CX-5 is actually far better looking imo; the CX-30 has weird proportions with its squished greenhouse and the huge plastic cladding on the sides isn't doing it any favours either. In terms of the dashboard; I don't think the CX-5's looks more dated; it just looks like a variation on the same theme as the CX-30's interior. Finally, from reviews I've seen, most notably that of Consumer Reports, the gap in refinement and ride quality between these two seems wide; the CX-5 is markedly superior in both aspects. So, if I was in the market for one of those two cars now, it'd definitely be the CX-5, even with me being a single guy who doesn't need the extra space.

How does the road noise compares between cx30 vs cx5 ?
@bradgray35772 жыл бұрын
As for the ac, I have a 2019 Mazda 6 signature trim (Canada) The ac in my car is much weaker than the ac in my wife's 2015 Mazda CX-5 GT trim. Not sure why Mazda vehicles are so different in that regard. As for the lane centering comments that other brands have. Ecch! I am 57 and I guess my generation is more concerned about concentrating on the road, rather than texting and driving. Why else would you need that feature? Not sure what the fine is down in the US, but here in Manitoba, if you get caught texting while driving, it is (I think) close to $500 for your first offense. I test drove both the CX-30 GT turbo and the CX-5 Signature (highest trim levels for both in Canada) I found the CX-30 more responsive and sleeker inside, and my wife and I are empty nesters. So the size is not that important to me as I am the only one in the car 90% of the time. The couple of deal breakers for me for the CX-30 is the lack of ventilated seats for our hot and muggy summers, smallish seats for my wife and I for long trips (both plus sized adults), the lack of rear visibility compared to the CX-5 and the weaker ac unit. Both great vehicles for the price and what you get.

CX-30 is the best, I had one as a rental and it was really comfy and nice. CX-5 is outdated and not really redesigned that much.
@Hennessy1983 жыл бұрын
I mean, it hasn't been redesigned at all besides for the new infotainment. The actual redesign is slated for 2022 or 2023, there have been spy shots of the new cx-5 (or cx-50) floating around for the past few months now.

We have both cx30 and cx5 in my household and they’re both better than Toyota, Nissan, Honda products. They both just drive differently, I drive the cx30 and love everything about it except the ac system as it’s not strong like the cx5 ac system, it’s just not strong enough for CA.

Its a nice car but lags in tech features compared to Honda, Toyota, Nissan. Its a beautiful looking car but I removed it from my shopping list since it doesn’t have lane centering and a touch screen infotainment.

@@pinakmiku4999 Mazda's lane keep is terrible (just bounce you from left to right lol) -- I have to agree, but I do love everything else about them. Nissan is trash (sorry, not sorry). Honda and Toyota are both good choices, but if driving assistance like lane centering is what you are looking for, I think Hyundai/Kia do the best job in the mainstream segment. They also have touch screen infotainment that are way better and more responsive than Toyota's. I think I would still choose Mazda out of all the mainstream Japanese/Korean brands, so I am a bit biased.
@pinakmiku49993 жыл бұрын
@@edwink1467 Ya of the japanese brands, Honda is only one who provides lane centering without adaptive cruise control on which i like a lot because ACC don't do a good job in accelerating and people cut off easily in busy highway. Korean Hyundai/kia also provide the same feature but I am biased towards japanese brands except Nissan especially due to their reliability and resale value.

Coming from a cx 30 owner, I can definitely attest the ac on the is very weak. Cx 30 little stiff, and body roll is much controlled. CX5 rides very nice, and sporty yeah extra space for sure. CX 5 is made in Japan while Cx30 murica/mexico. I find the CX5 turbo is more responsive than the cx 30 turbo.

Mazda next gen CX5 will hit it out of the ballpark. Will be on the new architecture, apparently inline 6 with mild hybrid coming and longer wheelbase to make up for the lack of trunk space the CRV and rav4 have on it.

I’d love for you to compare the 2021 CX-5 Signature to an RDX-I know the RDX is quite a bit more money...but what more do you get for that money?!
@JustinDoesTriathlon3 жыл бұрын
My wife test drove both and ended up with the Signature. The RDX costs a *lot* more and we couldn't pin it down. The SH-AWD is probably better, you get some more power, probably slightly better interior quality and audio overall, buuuuut... We couldn't find the ~$10k. It's probably 'better' overall, but lots of diminishing returns.
@RaceGasSmellsGood3 жыл бұрын
@@JustinDoesTriathlon Thanks for the info!
@MiniJCW223 жыл бұрын
I thought the RDX was more comfortable, had a better interior. The CX-5 drove more like a car than an SUV but still offered a lot of room which I preferred. Between the two, I’d lean CX-5 to save the extra money. The RDX can not display your speed digitally and requires you to read an analog speedometer unless you get the advance package which drives the price upwards of $10k more than a fully loaded CX-5. I also felt the RDX had subpar rear visibility.
@RaceGasSmellsGood3 жыл бұрын
@@MiniJCW22 Thanks for the info. When you say the RDX is more comfortable, do you mean the seats, a softer ride or something different? Just curious, as ride quality and seat comfort are unfortunately very important to me after a couple of motorcycle accidents that still hurt, ha ha
@MiniJCW223 жыл бұрын
@@RaceGasSmellsGood I didn’t like the seats in the CX-5. I don’t know if I have fat thighs or what but the side bolsters are really firm and pushed into my thighs which I didn’t like. Could be a me problem because few reviewers have mentioned this. I’d say ride quality is similar between the two but the RDX was slightly quieter at highway speeds and I liked the seats more. The RDX infotainment would take some getting used to, so I’d say the CX-5 wins there. If I would have liked the seats, I would have probably bought a CX-5. I will say I drove the grand touring reserve I think it was called and not the signature with Napa leather so maybe those seats would have been better.

Hey Topher, Thank you for your reviews. I have a question for you. Have you noticed like a sudden power loss in your CX-30 in hot weather? I have a Mazda 6 2015 and in summer from stop and go I feel a noticeable lag in power, I have to floor it to wake the engine up. I was also in Colorado a few weeks ago, and I rented a 2020 CX-5 with natural 2.5, same issue, with perfect weather runs like a dream, with hot weather it feels severely underpowered!

Sad to see the CX-30 2.5L NA EPA fuel economy (24/26/31 AWD) lagging by 3 from the Subaru Crosstrek 2.5L (27/29/34). The promise of SkyActiv high compression ratio and reduced combustion temps all go to waste.
@kenhoward35123 жыл бұрын
I'd suggest Mazda's engineering did not "go to waste." In terms of the difference in actual dollars spent on fuel annually, it might be worth it to avoid the Subaru's CVT. Mazda had to know their choice of transmission would cause lower mpg ratings, but chose to please those who actually like to drive (and not just transport cute puppies and little children).
@DavidDLee3 жыл бұрын
@@kenhoward3512 A gas RAV4, a much larger vehicle, gets better EPA than a CX-30. There's no excuse. Regarding transmission, to each their own. I own a CX-5, which I am planning to replace. I test drove a Crosstrek 2.5L. The CVT is pretty decent. Not as annoying as some other CVT vehicles I drove. On my CX-5 the transmission logic is also pretty decent, except when driving a winding road uphill. The car wants to keep a high gear, too much for the given grade. The engine sounds like its going to die.

It's an old engine. Like old. Lol They've confirmed they're working on new engines for the next generation. Likely out in 2023. Which is believable as the first gen cx 5 was only 5 years before this gen came out. (Including a new inline 6. They've also hinted at a cx50 to fall between the 5 and 9) They're also talking about adding a mild/basic hybrid system like Hyundai did the with the Tuscon
@DavidDLee3 жыл бұрын
@@nighttimestalker The SkyActiv engine was developed for 2013 model year. That's not old at all. Compare with the Crosstrek's FB engine, premiered in 2011 in the Forester. Mazda new inline 6 engine is not out yet and is not going to be used in the CX-30 anyway. Mazda dropped the ball on fuel-economy.

If need crossover and you want to get what you expect from crossover - you get CX-5. If you need Mazda 3 with a bit more clearance and improved interior- you get CX-30.
