I think that both the greatest and most torturous existence would be being forced to examine media highlights that came out at the time, and then comparing them to what's in the history books each generation on. If you had a time machine for explicitly that reason as well as being immortal, imagine creating an entire accurate archive of history that includes how terribly people recorded it, as well as how those inaccuracies affected people in the future.
