Princess Mononoke has really complex and deep theme inside. Yes, it is a story about the battle between human civilization and industrialization vs nature, but not only that… It shows how we Japanese used to live closely with nature and how we saw gods living within everything surrounding us, how peoples life changed within the time, the power balance between men and women and such… Several tips: in Japanese, wolfs are called “okami狼” and it is the same sound (but different kanji) as “big (oo) god (Kami)大神”, and in Shinto, deer is seen as a messenger of god. Also, there is a very old myth of a god who brought abundant from its dead body.

This is my favorite Ghibli movie. I saw it in a Japanese cinema as a child. I remember it being very scary. I've seen it many times since then. Now that I'm an adult, I think it's a very beautiful movie. Also, among Ghibli movies, "Princess Mononoke" very well reflects the values that continue to form the foundation of Japanese spirituality and culture from ancient times to the present day, such as nature worship and reverence for nature, that everything in this world has soul, and that everything can be either god or devil. There is no absolute good or evil. It's all a matter of position and perspective.

I believe that God in Japan was originally a “disaster” that threatened the lives of ordinary people, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons, thunderstorms, and landslides, as well as a “nature” that also brought blessings. That is why the “gods” in “Princess Mononoke” are sometimes kind, sometimes terrifying, and inaccessible to humans. Buddhism is often associated in many contents as the religion of Japan, but it is a foreign religion that was introduced to Japan from India in 538. The state religion of Japan is Shinto. This was originally born out of indigenous beliefs based on awe of nature, and its name was given to it in order to counter the introduction of Buddhism. （I translated the Japanese on a translation site, so sorry if it's weird!）

I'd like you to check out Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. It's a very old one (1980's?), but you could see what Miyazaki Hayao had been working on for decades and how he viewed human and nature.

i watched mononoke when i was a kid and i got so scared i couldnt finish it. i tried watching it again years later but it got me so sad that i ugly cried almost the whole movie ;u; its an amazing movie

Man I love this film. Ever since I was a kid, been one of my fave Ghibli movies. Always feels weird watching any ghibli film subbed though, even though I watch all my tv shows that way 😅 I think their dub version is fantastic

リアクションありがとうございます！進撃の巨人のリアクションから来ました。もののけ姫は一番好きなジブリ映画です。日本の文字に残っている古代史は、勝った側である中国大陸から渡来した人々の歴史観ですが、この映画では負けた側であるより古く日本に定住していた縄文系日本人（もののけ姫のお面やアシタカの村の習俗）も描かれているのが見所。

Eboshi abused the forest and built a castle. she then let the oppressed people of human society live there. I love fascinating villains riddled with contradictions; I'm reminded of Askeladd. For Ghibli, I highly recommend Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. If you want to see a classic adventure action movie, Castle in the Sky Totoro if you want to be healed May you continue to have a good anime journey♪

Ashitaka has a fetus with his fiancee "Kaya" from the beginning. He also has a physical relationship with Princess Mononoke "San" when they are in the cave. The director has stated that this is not depicted, but those who can infer it will be able to guess.

Human civilization only came to far through industrializing, like it or not but we need the iron towns. Without the forests cleared away and the iron towns built, you won't have the screens in front of you to watch this. Quite unfortunate that is

@@tianqidgls4405really? I’ve only watched the English version, and I never thought she was evil. I do think it was incredibly dumb of her to go after the guardian of the forest(not sure if it was a god or guardian or anything else)

@@dimoned123 I feel like people have seen the "nature good, human evil" type story so many times that when they see Eboshi and instantly think she is the "evil industrialist" without ever thinking about what she does or listening to the things she says and the nuances of her character.

Initially, I felt your reaction was that you did not understand the film and I was about to stop watching it. However, your understanding grew after the tatara place appeared. Your reaction from that point on was very enjoyable to watch. Your words "If I had seen this film as a child, my awareness of animals would have changed" made me very happy. I laughed when you said, "What kind of drug did Director Miyazaki use to come up with this movie lol." I think that is the best compliment! Thank you.
