Confession is good for the soul so I'm joining you. I saw a photo on Pinterest that is definitely our mantra:- "my problem isn't that I buy too much fabric, my problem is that I shop faster than I sew"

Adding to the 'too nice to use', - down the road you find the perfect pattern for the fabric, then you don't make it up, then you find the perfect pattern for the fabric and it still sits in your stash waiting for the perfect pattern?

Thanks so much for this very brave vlog! My husband allowed me a small bedroom in our house as my sewing room. He dutifully installed a peg board, a mirrored cupboard, shelves and various hooks. Then said (with authority) "No fabric outside this room!" I have fabric stashed under our queen bed (dust ruffle to hide), fabric stashed in our spare bedroom, under the stair well, and a floor to ceiling pile in our utility area. He has no idea what is all there.😉 He has been threatening lately to take on the project of "downsizing" the nooks and crannies in the house! 😲 ... Thanks again for the vlog

Suzie, you are too funny! You are definitely not alone with the fabric addiction. I'm being over run with fabric but I'm not showing it to anybody. As you said, buying fabric is another hobby and it's just so inspirational for our sewing hobby. I'm not sure production is the goal. Every step of the sewing process brings joy and that is the goal. Enjoy it! I'm excited to see all the beautiful things you make.

So nice to know I’m not the only one with more fabric than they can ever use. Makes me happy to know I’m in good company. I no longer open any emails I receive from fabric stores. Haven’t quite gotten to the point of unsubscribing. To make this short. I’ve made a pledge to myself not to buy any fabric for a year. Stay strong, you can do this.

So need to stick to this also! 2019, no fabric buy year!! I make jeans bags, so I have many many pairs of jeans. And 2 days ago I bought 7 more pairs!!!! Nooooooo!!! My husband and daughter are always complaining about my stash!! Seeming to take over the house, room by room. So I do need to stick to my 2019 pledge. Hmm! Got to do it!! Cheers. Should do September 2018 to end August 2019! In other words, do it now. Xxx

I tried the no buy route and was successful for about 3 months. Maybe I'll try it again, 3 months is better than not all, right? Maybe I'll challenge myself in how many weeks I can go without buying, then the numbers can rack up quickly and when I start over it won't seem so impossible? My goal is to de-clutter everything!

I had a stash of 12 collected over thirty years! Dress fabric, toy fabric, Bag fabric, lining fabric, embroidered fabric, upholstery fabric, faux leather and real leather. Now I am weaving fabric so I have had a declutter and it is now only seven! Boxes, large and full, that is of course! Favourites give us inspiration to create and as you are young youve got plenty of time to sew most of it....maybe! Lovely video, thank you for sharing.xxx

Me too! Totally obsessed and add to that a pattern buying addiction. I have a summer house full, and ikea units full, a huge blanket box and still have parcels unopened. I share my sewing space with the dining room so I can't hide it! But I need to stop, so am going to try until christmas. My exception is if we go away and there is a wonderful fabric in a shop I've never been to before. The pink fabric would look fab as a toaster sweater and the Seasalt fabric would look lovely as an ogden or chalk and notch have a lovely dress which I can't remember the name of. Good luck with your fabric buying restraint!

Fabric collecting is a separate hobby! The promise of what it could become really inspires me and I get full of ideas of things to sew.....you know what tho, you need a big toolkit. I make sure I shop my stash first if I have an idea, to see if there’s something suitable I already have. I like the fact that I can sit down if an afternoon on a whim and have all the stuff I need to make something without having to go to the shops (that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it! )

I was started to get fabricphobia of not wanting to use my stash fabric because it looks lovely being folded on my 4.5-foot vintage dollhouse which use to be my daughters. I was starting to go to thrift stores and looking for fabric and curtains to be used for garments. I had to stop myself and say just go to the fabric dollhouse and select a blouse size fabric to make a blouse. I did it which took me about 1 day to sew it and I felt better. Today, I selected a fabric for a 1950 Simplicity Vintage long vest and inverted pleated skirt to start my Fall/Winter 2018 Vintage wardrobe. I decided to select my patterns and fabric and store them at the bottom of the dollhouse for me to begin sewing my vintage projects. It did work for me which makes me use my fabric instead of purchasing more fabric. great video

I'm the same, and I think a lot of us share that. So I'm with you: it's a buying freeze until March, including consumer goods as well as fabrics, and I want to see how much of this stuff I can use up. I realize that I have obsessions, and they are fun to indulge, but I now also think I'm being wasteful and I want to be more environmentally conscientious. So - I'm sewing the stash until sometime next year. It feels really good so far, and I'm pulling out great fabrics I've kind of forgotten about, so there is fun in that. Thanks for this great video: lovely fabrics! - Bonnie

Oh Suzanna, you're so cute. Buying a lot of fabric is part of the joy of sewing for yourself (look at all those choices). I can tell this fabric brings you joy -- it's obvious. As others have already suggested, why not try to go for 6 months without buying anymore & see how much you can use up in that 6 months. Keep a log of the things you make from your stash & see where you are in 6 mos. Also, I've found, I can really like a fabric sooooo much that I can never find a pattern "worthy" of the fabric. I kind of think you're also struggling there. It's beautiful, it needs to be made into something so just go ahead & make a decision on a pattern & sew it. It may be fabulous or a dud but you'll learn from the experience & you'll be the better for it. Happy sewing!

You made me chuckle, you have me tackling my ufos and by being good and selling some of your fabric you will be enabling someone else to add to their stash! I think the problem that we all have is that there are too many lovely fabrics, too many great ideas, too many wonderful patterns and only 24 hours in the day and life expects us to actually leave our sewing machines sometimes, so technically it isn't really our fault! I collect fabric and patterns that I will never use in 2 lifetimes but this week I have accidentally added 4 new patterns to my collection! Whoops. Keep up the great entertainment x

You are not the only one and I love you for doing this video! My - humongous- stash goes back twenty years or so and has gotten completely out of hands over the past few months. I moved in April and have been unable to sew for over six months, so instead, I've just been buying more patterns (same problem) and more fabric. At this point, I could open a small shop ( and my flat looks like it). So I will pledge with you, not to buy fabric for a year. My exceptions will be 1) gifts (duh!), 2) supplementary fabric needed to complete a project, and 3) unlikely but not impossible, sewing for other people (though even that should be covered by my stash. So, no buying new fabrics till the end of August 2019. You can hold me accountable :) I'm thinking that the minute I have (finallly!) a few more projects under my belt, I will be offering my services as a pattern tester, because that would force me to actually MAKE something with all that fabric! Not pledging to not get new patterns, because that would be unrealistic and really just too much at the same time. Maybe next year...
@Threadquarters
@Threadquarters 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, good on you! We can do this! I'm not sure I'll be able to stick to a WHOLE year without buying fabric....but we shall see. I may try getting my stash down to just fitting in the Ikea drawers initially and see how I get on. I agree with your exceptions though. And yes, pattern testing is a good idea....although, I love all my fabric too much to use it on a pattern that might need tweaking!

Boy - I’m not one to advise you on a “cure” for fabric addiction. I could open my own store for as much fabric as I own! I used the excuse that my daughter-in-law and granddaughter’s would inherit my stash, but I don’t think that they could even sew it all in their lifetime. Seriously - I’m waiting for a 12 step intervention group to meet with me... So then, what would I do if I attempted to quell my fabric purchasing? Probably confine my purchases to what could fit in those IKEA drawers. I’ll be watching to see if you are able to maintain your new “fabric sobriety”, LOL. BTW - NICE fabric stash!

I am very much at peace with my fabric accumulation. I am a collector just like people who collect pictures, or sport memorabilia or china, etc. etc. Find it really makes me smile to go through what I have, admiring how beautiful many fabrics are. Get the same joy looking at my patterns. Along with that, it is dream planning and that is wonderful to have. Some fabrics have been with me for 30 years and I won't be saying goodbye to them. On a serious note, have donated some fabrics to my local High School dressmaking courses when I do some culling. Love sewing, love collecting!

Oh don't feel so bad! You're a collector (and so am I) and collectors aren't expected to make use of their tresures! You have made a lovely display of your fabrics when you pull out the drawers which shows how much you care about them. I think you should find a good way to keep the ones in the bags as well, it's a bit sad for them to be kept in Ikea bags. I have shallow cupboards all the way upp to the ceiling with lots of shelves. My own collection consists of fabric since the 1980th (or is it the 1970th?) plus a considerable amount of clothes items that I have an idea of refashioning or just make use of the lovely fabric and/or detailes on them. And I still buy more 😊 I think that as long as you can afford it it's fine! Thankyou for sharing your lovely vlogs! Love your spirit! ❤️

Hi Suzie, I know exactly what you mean 😏. I have only been sewing for just over a year and I'm completely obsessed with fabric now. I do try to only buy the fabric I need for a project but I'm afraid that's going downhill.... slowly I would say, rather than rapidly, but that's only because I limit myself to some sort of budget....or I would need a much bigger storage place 😉. Oh my....that liberty sweatshirt fabric is so beautiful and my colours too, so the budget is going to be blown 😁. I have had Sea Salt fabric a couple of times and managed to get them in the sale. It's always great quality and like you said, wrapped up so nicely. I just bought the McCall's M7387 shirt dress, which comes with five different variations, including a shirt and tunic style. I haven't made it yet, but I thought that your Sea Salt fabric would look great in all the variations 👌. Enjoy your beautiful fabrics Suzie and I know that you will be making some fantastic things and I'm looking forward to seeing them.... happy sewing 😁💝😘

Oops, hope I didn't enable some Liberty fabric buying! ;) I just checked out M7387, it's lovely, I hadn't seen it before. Yes, that fishing boat fabric could look very cute in a shirt like that. Your fabric is to die for!!!! Three of your fabrics really spoke to me. The mint green swimmers, oh my. I would probably be predictable and make a Scout Tee because it’s my TNT for fabrics I love. However, Michelle at Style Maker Fabrics just suggested a Gallery Tunic for a beautiful Japanese double gauze I just purchased. I haven’t made it yet. You should consider a Coco for that gorgeous sweatshirt material from Liberty. I just made one out of a lovely sweatshirt material, also from Style Maker Fabrics, and I love it. I went up one size because of the weight of the fabric and that worked for me. I purchased the Rifle & Co fabric in the red color way and love it so much I can’t cut into it. I think you are right, a shift dress might be just the thing for it. I’ve downloaded the free Capen Shift Dress from Made to Sew. Do you follow Aneka? She’s amazing, like you!

I never would have expected to become such a fabric consumer when I returned to sewing 3 years ago. I think before the advent of online shopping it was rare for sewists to have such fabric collections as we do now. Back in the day your local fabric shop would only have a limited selection and typically you would buy a pattern and the fabric they recommended you use to make it up. Now with online there is SO much available - so many sales it's just impossible to resist (clearly :) ). I have QUITE a collection too - rather horrifying to be honest. Definitely more than I'll ever use in MY lifetime (I'm 63). I do always make muslins so much of my less expensive fabric gets used for that. I also often make up at least 2 of a garment. Right now I'm making up jumpers (like the York by Helen's Closet but not that particular pattern) so I made up one that was midi and another that's a shorter one. I have the Claudia by Tessuti on the way to me now too. I've become obsessed with that look of a simple linen jumper with a Tee under it : )) Additionally I have plans to make up several Tees and leggings as well to go under the jumpers which means the whole project will probably use up a fair bit of fabric (hopefully!) So you might consider that as well Suzie - make up 2 or 3 when you're making yourself a Tee or skirt (you have some gorgeous big flowered prints that would make GORGEOUS circle skirts) and that will eat through quite a bit of fabric at once. I've found making up 2 or 3 at the same time (batch sewing) is actually economical time wise too. Just some thoughts to help you gallop through some of your beautiful fabric and get it made up into lovely garments you'll enjoy wearing :)
@Threadquarters

I think you hit the nail on the head there Kathleen, it is the ease of buying fabric online now. If I had a decent fabric shop near me I feel like my spending and approach to project planning would be quite different. Sounds like you have some lovely projects on the go at the moment. Yes, batch sewing is a very good idea. I did that for my Mandy Boat Tees and, although i found it a bit tedious, it was wonderful to have 5 t-shirts to add to my wardrobe at the end. AND clear some of my stash! A good idea going forward, thanks!

here's what came to mind to me for your fabrics: the swimmers as a pussybow blouse, would look neat over dark jeans, casual cool. The Pelicans as a cami. The bold Tropical fabric as Carrie trousers with a solid cami. The Turquoise fabric as a cami and a sarong skirt so it can be worn as separates or together as a cute matchy matchy. I just cut the sarong skirt and its unlined and 4 darts, tie closure. Afraid of a bold statement says the girl in bright red lips and a brightly striped shirt?! :D you are cute! You have dark hair and can handle bold colors just fine. I challenge you to sew whatever you originally think of. GO FOR IT! You won't know until you try. Don't hold your fabric as too precious to sew! :0 I also like to collect fabric and all the possibilities they hold. It's totally fine!

I've just downloaded something called the Stash Shrinker. It's an excel document put together by someone in the sewing community. You tell it the unit you work in (meters/yards/pieces) and how many of those you want to sew before you can allow yourself to buy fabric. Then every time you sew something or buy something you fill it in and it tells you if you're allowed to buy or if you need to sew. It's probably something you can do in your head but I'm hoping the act of filling it in will make me stick to the plan.

You are right in saying that fabric shopping gives an endorphin/dopamine boost: it's exactly the same as shopping for clothes or whatever makes you feel good in the moment. I have too much fabric as well. For me, the most effective way to stop/reduce buying fabric is to unsubscribe from newsletters from fabric shops, stop following on Instagram, etc. so I don't get lured by sales and new releases. Also as someone else said, seeing my fabric, rather than having it put away, helps to remind me of what I already have. How about instead of browsing online, or as soon as you open up the internet browser, stop and go to your stash and find a piece of fabric and a pattern to make next/soon and put it on your sewing table, even open the instructions and start reading! I am saying this for myself but maybe you can try it too... I told myself at the beginning of the year that I would at least finish my #2018makenine before buying any new fabric and I didn't succeed, but I am going back to that goal as a starting point. Good luck to you!

@@Threadquarters Yeah, do it! I unfollowed ALL the fabric shops on Instagram. I am really pleased with how many other interesting people I see in my feed now, that I didn't before! I still follow sewists and bloggers so I still see sewing but now I see a wider variety of images that previously were a lot of fabric. I am unsubscribing from the newsletters as I receive them. I realized that I know my go-to/favorite shops well enough that when I go back to needing fabric, I will know exactly where I want to go (online or in person). I will always have new ideas, but now I will be able to focus on making the things I really need that I already have fabric for.

Ah, the angst of it ;-) LOL We are (mostly) all the same I think. I was very guilty about my hoard this time last year and did manage to put the breaks on. For the main, I have just sewed from my stash for 12 months and I have to say, it is just as enjoyable seeing the clothes made up, and wearing them, AND being able to fit the fabric into one cupboard, as buying the fabric ;-) I keep on reminding myself that in another year I will have made up most of the stash and have the go ahead to buy some more. Nevertheless, I have thought about my puritan future self, and how this restrained sewist would have a dozen or so more carefully selected fabrics on a shelf at any time ;-) I do still believe that you need to have a bit of a range of things on hand for inspiration and being able to sew what you feel like sewing. Patterns, on the other hand, are a harder habit to break for me!! :-| Baby steps... Love your fabrics, and would be very very happy to have your stash. Gx

I have a stash I really wish was smaller, because the longer it sits the less I like it. I noticed when I buy things locally, I only buy 1 or 2 projects at time and actually finish it. But when I buy online or when I am travelling abroad, I spend to get the free shipping or because its on sale with no projects in mind. That's the fabric that sits and sits. So I am really trying to buy local now. The thift store is also my weakness, they price at $1 a yard and I just can't resist so a lot of my stash is thifted, but I don't feel guilty using thifted fabric as muslin.

You are right, its just so easy, and there is so much temptation, to buy online - and I do the same...add a bit more to get the free shipping (I'm pretty sure they know we will do that! clever sales technique!). Welcome to the Fabric Fantatics Fellowship! I haven't read through all 141 Comments yet so I don't know if any person has come up with the answer to combating an unquenchable desire to acquire fabric- I haven't. Is it because we have a fantasy that THIS new piece will enable the most beautiful garment to be created, it will fit perfectly and will be sewn with matchless skill? I am going to try and resist by only sewing what I ( or a family member) needs, by shopping my stash first and by asking myself, as I stand in front of temptation in the Goldhawk Road or some such location, "Exactly why are you buying this?". If the answer is "Because your winter trousers have worn to shreds and you do not have any suitable fabric to make a pair and this fabric is precisely the right weight and fabric type and quality and colour etc" then I can buy it. If not, then my purse remains closed- or at least until I reach a nice cafe and can reward myself with coffee and cake for being a good girl, although that might be the start of another addiction.

I actually alarmed myself by cataloguing my fabric. Took me HOURS and HOURS. If I sew a garment every week I might get through it in six years... but but but. I created a form on Word so I now have this lovely lever arch file with details of pinned swatches (or if a really big pattern, small photo), length/width, supplier, price per metre (the last two where known - some of my fabric has been with me for years....), pattern used, alterations made. (Last two mainly blank at the moment). So now when I add to that lot I immediately cut a small swatch, add details, and file. I can now sit and browse my stash and dream of what I am going to make. I did decide to buy no more. That lasted a week.....

Hi Angela, so glad you found my channel! And welcome to the wonderful world of sewing! I'll try my best to answer your questions. For leggings you want a thick-ish jersey. The most important thing is the stretch percentage. I've found this blog post about picking the right fabric for the Helens Closet Avery leggings, lots of great info in it: helensclosetpatterns.com/2018/02/22/choosing-fabrics-for-the-avery-leggings/ That would also be a great pattern to use. Try Minerva.com or 1st For Fabrics - they often have lots of jersey fabrics. You can also buy fabric that is specifically for exercising, and is good at wicking etc. I'm afraid I know very little about that, so try googling! Poplin is a non stretch cotton fabric, similar to what bed sheets are made out of. Its great for dresses, skirts and shirts. I have a vlog showing my fabric storage you can check out if you like! kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5nZmaKAm956eKM (its very old and I cringe a bit looking at it! lol).

I think it's pointless to set targets you know you can't stick to - like extreme diets, and people who love fabric vowing not to buy any for a year (except...). But there is something unhealthy about having excessive quantities of unused stuff sitting in drawers and carrier bags. Much better to go for something more realistic, like a rule that you make two items for every one you buy/acquire. Over a year or two, that would get the stash back into reasonable proportions. It would also be something attainable, that allowed you to scratch that itch when you needed to.
