I like how in the movie Quirrel makes a point of not shaking Harry's hand when he first meets him in the Leaky Cauldron. It's a change from the book but I think a good one. It's one more clue that you'll only realise the second time round and relieves the movie of having to explain why Voldy wasn't there yet. Also refusing the hand shake is much more subtle in the movie than it could be in a book where it would have to be described explicitly, so I think they chose the best version for each medium.

My theory is the house ghost titles goes to the oldest members of their houses because if think about it three of the 4 are among the 1st batch of students that were at the school. And I think Sir Nicholas was probably the oldest Gryffindor and only ghost they had. Which says alot the gryffindor's.

You're not wrong. In the fifth book, when Harry goes to Nick, he DOES say that it takes a specific kind of person to stay behind AS a ghost. I believe that Pottermore states that each headmaster of Hogwarts gets to write their own school song, which means that Dumbledore wrote the Hoggy Warty Hogwarts lyrics and came up with the tradition of singing it at your own pace. I almost think that's more satisfying than the founders writing it because it really plays in to the whimsy of Dumbledore's character. (Also Pottermore says that the reason it wasn't sung year two onwards was because things were getting more serious and Dumbledore didn't think it appropriate.)

I've always seen Filch as being a charity case from Dumbledore. Him being a manifestation wouldn't make sense unless he manifested recently When Arthur and Molly was in school some 25 to 30 years prior to this book, it was a different caretaker all together. It could also be that Dumbledore put in a squib here as kind of a challenge to the students in the sense of "if you are getting caught by a squib who can't even do magic, you shouldn't be doing whatever it is you were doing" out of universe explanation being that the author just wanted to put in a squib character for the reveal later and this is really the best place for it

Though you are correct that "luna" is Spanish for "moon," I think it is more important in a Harry Potter wizarding world context that it is the Latin word for "moon." Latin is found throughout names and spells in the wizarding world. While Albus is the most memorable example, Luna Lovegood's father's name is also an example: Xenophilius. Granted, his name is a Latinization of a Greek name, but it is still the Latin form that is used in that case. Names like Hermione, Penelope, and Merope are all straight up Greek (and the final "e" is pronounced as /ee/ in all three cases), but Latin is the more common, and given that Xenophilius is Latin, it is more likely that Luna's name is intended to be Latin, not Spanish, where Xeonophilius would be "Zenofilio."

They do ask Myrtle about her death at some point I remember, but she just says all she remembers is the horrible eyes or something to that effect. Everybody's too afraid of the bloody Baron to ask him about his death A theory on the ghosts. All of the house ghosts are the first to have died and become ghosts that were in the respective house they represent. The reason why The Grey Lady, The Bloody Baron, and The Fat Fryer are so much older as ghosts than nearly headless neck is because it's so much more rare for Gryffindor to become ghosts because their defining the characteristic is courage and Nick himself admits that ghostly existence is for cowards too afraid to move on.

Snape wouldn't have necessarily been protecting his thoughts....Voldemort would wanted to try to see if Snape's loyalty had changed. Snape looking at Harry and hating him would've probably made Voldemort feel the same way (strongly) causing the strong feeling that caused Harry pain. Also, maybe those feelings played into Voldemort later deciding that he could trust Snape.

Like so may others I wanted to get my letter to Hogwarts and start doing magic. Thanks to you guys the journey and dream stays alive. Just turned 34 and still waiting to get the letter 😂

Greatings from Greece. :) PS: I just thought of a great drinking game. Hit a shot whenever the word "like" is uttered and you'll get wasted in approximately 8 minutes. :P

Filch is one solid poltergeist if ever was one, which he's not 😂 Given that Molly names the caretaker before Filch one Apolleon Pringle oh and Mcgonagall mentioned that Filch has only been at Hogwarts for 25 yrs (by the time of the battle of Hogwarts comes around)
@PhilBagels
@PhilBagels 8 ай бұрын
Yes! The idea that Filch is a poltergeist is, IMO, the single stupidest theory I've ever seen from SCB. I have two theories about him: 1. He is being punished for a crime. Maybe because he's a skwib, they decided it wasn't appropriate to send him to Azkaban. So they made him do "community service" as a non-magical janitor at Hogwarts. In support of this theory, I point out that his name is Filch, which means "steal". Perhaps he was a thief. 2. This one is a bit more complicated and deals with the fundamental nature of magic and the wizarding world. The idea is that the "energy" of magic (or whatever you want to call it) has to come from somewhere. Magic doesn't just happen by itself, but something has to "power" it. And what powers it is non-magical work. So they get a non-magical janitor to do work, which serves as a "power plant" for the magic being used at Hogwarts. It's also why Ron is given detention polishing trophies without magic. That provides more magical energy. And presumably, other similar tasks are given to students serving detention, to further "charge the magical batteries". And this is necessary at Hogwarts because of the remote location. In cities, there are plenty of muggles around doing ordinary muggle labor, which provides plenty of energy for the magic that the small percentage of wizards in the area need.
@Martyn_Wolf
@Martyn_Wolf 8 ай бұрын
@@PhilBagels He's a pure Squib, as we know Squibs come from magical family, they don't have magic blood. You're second theory certainly is interesting I'll say. Though it does glide over the premise of "magical blood". Hagrid mentions to Harry upon getting him from the Hut on the Rock that "Muggles don't have a single *drop of magical blood* in them" highlighting that Magic is inherited and passed down through genetics, hence we can get muggle-born, Muggles that have enough magical potential to be in the Book of Admittance. Magic is passed down through genetics then and not through non magical work. Hogwarts has house elves, so I've never understood why they need a caretaker. Your first theory could help support why he's there. Although many squibs will stay in the magical world.
@PhilBagels
@PhilBagels 8 ай бұрын
@@Martyn_Wolf That isn't what my second theory is saying. I know magical *ability* is passed down by blood. I'm saying that the energy that fuels it is in non-magical work - done by anyone, with or without magical blood. Wizards have the "magic engine" inside them, and squibs and muggles don't. But work done nearby - without magic - provides the gasoline. And yes, contrary to what Hagrid said, muggles do have magical blood in them occasionally, otherwise there would never be any muggleborn wizards.
@Martyn_Wolf
@Martyn_Wolf 8 ай бұрын
@@PhilBagels What Hagrid refers too is most Muggles don't have a drop of magical blood. It's setting the stage that there's going to be some level of segregation because of it. Hmmm I don't think non magic work fuels magic. Otherwise all the non magical work the Muggles do would make nearly every Witch or Wizard highly powerful 😅 That would then discount that Magic is passed through genetics. If non magical work fueled it. What do you mean exactly by *fuel* regarding magic. As in what does this energy look like, where does it go?
@PhilBagels
@PhilBagels 8 ай бұрын
@@Martyn_Wolf It's only a theory that I came up with. I admit it's rather contrived. But there are magical "traditions" of "fueled" magic. It's sometimes called "mana", and there are other names for it as well. You need a certain amount of mana to use magic. Perhaps more powerful spells require greater amounts. It has nothing to do with how powerful a wizard you are. Just like the amount of gasoline in a car's tank has nothing to do with how powerful the engine is. If there's gas, the engine can run. If there isn't, then it can't. And it has nothing to do with who is a wizard and who isn't. Mana doesn't do a muggle any good. Just like gasoline doesn't help you walk. Only wizards can use mana. The presence of mana doesn't make you a wizard. And applying this theory to HP, it would seem that in general, there's always plenty of mana around - because there are usually muggles nearby. But Hogwarts is far away from any muggles, so there needs to be some supplemental source of mana, provided by Filch, and students serving detention, and anyone nearby (such as in Hogsmeade) doing non-magical work. Every time you lift a heavy object using your muscles instead of wingardium leviosa, you're generating some mana. Maybe even every time you walk or run, instead of apporting or flying on a broom. But like I said, it's just a theory. Because the SCB are right: Filch's presence makes no sense without some kind of explanation. So either he's being punished or he's making mana. (Or he's a poltergeist. 🙄)

Since the Fidelius Charm is brought up early on regarding the Sorting Hat, I had a thought recently! Could a Fidelius Charm have been used to make someone Secret Keeper and then modify the memory of that person so they no longer remember what they're Secret Keeper of? Would the charm still work in this case and basically make it an impenetrable Secret, since the Keeper themselves couldn't even remember it?

Blubber in UK is someone crying rather pathetically, which is opposite of a Gryffindor. To the bitter end part doesn’t really work. Bitter end is pursuing something difficult or unpleasant for the person completing the task. End here is more about Slytherins doing anything, even if it requires something morally repugnant or stepping over others, to reach their personal end goals.

Gentlemen! I first want to say I am a huge fan! I’ve been following your channel for around 5 years now and consistently enjoy the videos across all of the fandoms you cover. Anytime a new movie comes out y’all are the first place I go to for reviews! I’m around y’all’s age down here in South Carolina and have also grown up in the “sweet spot” where we all aged somewhat with Harry as the books were being released and the story progressed. I love the new “Through the Griffin Door”series and am enjoying going chapter by chapter with you guys. I also read HP on audible a lot while I’m at work or doing chores at home and this has been a lot of fun to listen to while working. I particularly loved watching the inception of the Hogwarts is a Dragon theory after having watched the video on it a week or so ago. Also Harry’s (and seemingly the other Gryffindor’s) love for potatoes seems fitting to me. The Potato is obviously the most magical food! What other food can you make into some dish for literally any occasion? Breakfast: Hash Browns Fast Food: French Fries Fancy Meal: Baked Potato (my personal favorite) Holidays: Mashed Potatoes Picnic: Potato Salad Snack at Home: Chips Party: Vodka I borrowed some of that list from a meme I saw a while back but it still stands. Potatoes are magic and you can eat them anytime and with anything! Anyway guys, I love the new show and look forward to tuning in each week for the next chapter. Hope you guys hit number one in America next. Keep it up! P.S. Y’all should do a meet & greet around Charlotte, NC sometime. Take care!

These podcasts are definitely the highlights of my Sundays, and I do find myself re-listening to Through the Griffin Door when I'm talking a walk or drive. Your podcast has motivated me to revisit the first and second books for the first time in a very long time; I'm constantly listening to book 3-7 in my daily life. It has also motivated me to revisit the 8 movies for the first time in equally as long. A question, and I don't want to derail your plans, would you consider doing a quick book to movie comparison; either as a last 20min of the last chapter of each book or as a SCB video (which in a sense there already is a good handful)?

I think Filch definitely committed a crime against a wizard child and was given a life sentenced to serve at Hogwarts since they probably couldn’t send him to Azkaban or muggle prison. It’s the ultimate punishment for a crime like that.

I’m surprised they forgot about his Kwikspell letter being a Squib. Another theory I have is like you said he may have gotten in some trouble. Albus sympathizing what had happened with his father, and his sister. Albus helps people who may be misunderstood (Squibs), gave Filch, like Hagrid.. a chance for good purpose, and a reliable job at Hogwarts. Filch I think just enjoys tormenting kids. And I see Albus letting his behavior kind of just run itself giving students some exposure to “interesting and unpleasant” wizards in the world. He is harmless to students at the end of the day. Otherwise Albus wouldn’t have him around.

blubber is also a British word for crying - example "Stop blubbering" - Someone blubbered through their sentence (suggests crying whilst talking) to blubber isn't to wail but it's definitely tearing up - from the English Cambridge dictionary: Blubber: to cry in a noisy way like a child: There he sat, cowering against the wall, blubbering like a child.
