@joshuanichols54995 жыл бұрын
Console Gamer You really don’t get how ass backwards you sound bro? I’m honestly not trying to troll you. I want you to not be hesitant to say what you really feel. 💯 If Tim Duncan is your favorite player but you feel Michael Jordan is the goat, just say that. However, if you feel Tim Duncan is the goat, then stand on that. Don’t let these Jordan stans make you undercut that feeling by saying he’s YOUR goat but MJ is THE goat. Then Tim Duncan is not YOUR goat. He’s just YOUR favorite player. No matter what these MJ stans and sports media try to tell you, lightning will not strike you for saying Tim Duncan is better than Michael Jordan if that’s what you feel. And you honestly would have a strong case for that. It’s not like you’re saying Clyde Drexler or Reggie Miller is better than MJ. Absolutely nobody should look at you crazy for saying that, even if they disagree. Tim has never missed a playoff or even won less than 50 games in a season that wasn’t cut short by a lockout. Michael Jordan has done both. People always say that it was a Ray Allen jump shot that cost Tim Duncan a 6th title. But this was actually one of the worst officiated Finals ever. And it was that poor officiating that even made a Ray Allen jump shot costing Tim Duncan a 6th ring possible in the first place. That and the God awful play of Manu Ginobili. But Duncan really should have six rings and at least two more Finals MVPs from 07 and 13 had he not been cheated. As for regular season MVPs, it’s hard to use such a political, story driven award as argument for one player over another. Yeah MJ has five to Duncan’s two. But I can only give so much credibility to an MVP that Steve Nash has been awarded twice and KOBE F’N BRYANT only once. Tim Duncan has matched MJ on all NBA first teams, could’ve easily been awarded at least three more regular season MVPs and that he never won at least one DPOY award is a crime. He also averaged a double double the first 13 years of his career and was still highly productive after. He played in a share the wealth system his entire career and placed team success over individual numbers. Otherwise, he could’ve posted even better numbers. Anybody with even poor vision could see that Tim was skilled enough to average 30 ppg and 15 rpg. Finally, Tim Duncan is far and away the best power forward ever. While Michael at best is ARGUABLY the the greatest shooting guard. But contrary to popular belief Michael wasn’t better than Kobe who is the real goat as far as I’m concerned. So I write all that to really just make the point that you don’t have to rank MJ ahead of Tim if that’s not what you feel. If Tim Duncan is YOUR goat, then in your eyes, he is THE goat.....end of story.

Thing about Tim Duncan I find most impressive is that he got his 5 championships without a real superstar in their prime as a teammate. David Robinson was great but when he won his two with Tim Duncan he was way past his prime, Kawhi is a great player but he wasn't anywhere close to his prime when he won the championship with him, Tony Parker was an all star and Manu was a great 6th man but neither of them are what anyone would consider all time greats. Compare that two his competition, he went through Shaq and Kobe twice to get his first two, beat the defending champion Pistons for his third, went through Kobe in the first round and LeBron in the finals for the 4th and LeBron, D-Wade and Bosh for the last.
@rashard43 жыл бұрын
So a still great and yet past prime Robinson, bookended by a rising star in Kawhi, while playing most of those years with to perennial all-stars in Ginobli and Parker, while being assisted by one or two time all-stars Sean Elliot and Avery, with a deep bench all those years (with all time great rabbit's foot Robert Horry there for a few of those years, oh, and Steve Kerr's sharp shooting arse), and coached by the slacker Popovich? I love TD too but he was hardly alone in his championship pursuits.
@jamespuso16273 жыл бұрын
@@rashard4 Obviously, nobody has ever won 3+ championships alone much less 5. All you said was true except that Ginobili was a perennial all star, he only made it twice, but compare this to what other guys who have at least 5 had. Bill Russell had 7 hall of famers. Magic had a top 5 all time player in Kareem and an all star in Worthy with a deep bench, Kareem himself had Magic and all that too. MJ had Scottie Pippen, Kukoc for 4 and Rodman for 3. You could argue that's less than Duncan had but in all other instances they had WAY more. Kobe had Shaq, a top 10 all time player for the first 3, Pau for the last 2. Shaq was way better than anyone Duncan had and you could actually argue the same for Pau given Robinson and Kawhi's ages. Point being, he had A LOT less than these guys. Arguably Pop was the best help he had as he's probably the greatest coach of all time. But nobody's ever accused Phil Jackson, Pat Riley or Red Aurbach to be lacking in that department.

You could argue about better to build a team around definitely. But saying he didn’t need a top 5 player around him is funny. When was Pau or Bynum a top 5 player in the league? I’ll give you Shaq (though you could argue they were 1 and 1A). But let’s not sleep on all the help Duncan had on top of being in the same offense and defense under the same coach for his entire career. Robinson was one of the best big men in the league, Parker (top PG in league), Manu (best 6th man and arguably a top 5 SG in most of his career). And that’s leaving out the role player help like Green, Leonard, etc. underrated and one of my favorite players but I’d say he had more help and more consistency than almost anyone in the top 10.

He was "THE" POWER FORWARD in the age of power forwards/big men. He either defeated and dominated every big man that he faced in the regular season, post season, pre season, and off season. He went through KG, Shaq, C-Webb, Dirk, AD, Ben n Rasheed Wallace, Blake Griffin n DeAndre Jordan, McDyees, Marcus Camby, Pau n Mark Gasol, Yao Ming, K-Mart, STAT, Carlos Boozer, Elton Brand, Birdman, Big Shot Bob, Z-Bo. Give the man his props because he had a lot of competition during those 19 years.

Duncan is phenomenal and is personally in my top 10. However is goat status takes a hit as his spurs had continued success as he got older and took on a smaller role, they continued to win even after losing Duncan, Kawhi, Manu, AND Parker....so alot of his success gets shared with the great coach popovich and the spurs entire organization. Love me some Timmy and the medias disrespect on him is outrageous for sure, he defitnitely belongs in the convo. Great video

This was by far the most persuasive GOAT argument of the 9. Previous to this video Duncan isn't someone I would have even considered in the debate, great way to cap off the series! I personally still give the title to MJ as well, mostly because I think the title of GOAT has more to do with the zeitgeist of basketball than anything else. Jordan dominated the last era of the TV centralized household. Basketball fan or not, chances are someone was forcing the family to watch those games, forcing everyone to watch Jordan dominate. Most importantly Jordan just looked beautiful doing it in a way that few players do. It's beyond Basketball as the game, Jordan for better or worse, deserved or not, he's the spirit of the dunk. Others certainly do it, did it and will do it better than him, but when a normal person thinks of dunking, dunking ANYTHING really, they think Jordan. While I'm not convinced he'll hold that greatness forever, that's greatness you can't quantify.
@mprattyh35 жыл бұрын
He's in my top 10-15. I could go as high as 7 or so. He does have a cool story. He was on his way to becoming an Olympic swimmer until a hurricane destroyed the island's only Olympic size swimming pool. He turns to basketball at 14 and the rest is history

The Hank Aaron of Basketball: Meaning he never wowed you wit overwhelming inflated STATS. But in the end he would end up being a 5X NBA Champion 3X FMVP an a 2X MVP while being the best PF of ALL-TIME. That's the real GREATNESS of Tim Duncan.

As a Spurs fan, I love Timmy, but I wouldn’t say he’s the GOAT. Although I believe he has about the same, if not a better, resume as LeBron. I rank him top 10, arguably top 5. And you could argue he’s better than Kobe

Lone Wolf Look I’m not saying Timmy is better than Kobe, because even I don’t believe he is, but you could make a strong argument. Timmy is a 2x MVP, 5x Champ, 3x Finals MVP, 15x All-Star, All-Star Game MVP, Rookie of the Year, 8x NBA All-Defensive 1st Team, 7x NBA All-Defensive 2nd Team, and a 15x All-NBA member. While Kobe is a MVP, 5x Champ, 2x Finals MVP, 18x All-Star, 4x All-Star Game MVP, 2x Scoring Champ, 15x All-NBA member, 9x All-Defensive 1st Team, and a 3x All-Defensive 2nd Team. I would say it’s pretty even on the accolades part, but accolades aren’t everything. I still believe Kobe to be the better player, but you’re lying if you say you can’t compare 2 of the top 10 players of all time.
@lildino20864 жыл бұрын

I think Tim is the best argument against the whole GOAT discussion. He was so fundamentally efficient at both ends of the court that he almost flew beneath the radar. I have a basket of GOATs and Duncan is one of them. It doesn't really make sense to pick one of them.

In my opinion, the best metric to use to determine GOATness, is MVP award shares . It basically is how many MVP votes a player gotten in their career, and it's extremely accurate at ranking the top 50ish players. Here are the top 15 player all time according to MVP award shares: Michael Jordan LeBron James Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Larry Bird Magic Johnson Bill Russell Shaquille O'Neal Karl Malone Tim Duncan Kobe Bryant Wilt Chamberlain Julius Erving James Harden Kevin Durant David Robinson The only obvious issue with this ranking that I see is that Wilt and Kobe should be higher. Another thing to note is that Lebron is extremely close to catching up with Jordan, and after this season he will almost certainly be ranked first.

I mean he’s 5 for 6, never won under 50 games and had a Finals series where he averaged 24 points 17 rebounds 5 assists and 5 blocks...ive never seen anything like that in my life. He’s a PF and that’s really not seen as a star position, and he was as fun as watching grass grow for a casual fan-but he’s clearly in my top ten. I got him in there instead of Bill Russel. Can’t really put him above the other guys.
