Just the "Catfish" concept alone is pretty terrible. I knew a guy who was a super nice person, but he was shy. He had a hard time meeting girls. He met someone online and became totally smitten... Later it turned out this person was absolutely made up, using someone elses photos and all that. He was devastated and I felt really bad for him.

Yes the same thing happened to my husband’s cousin years ago. When he finally drove many hours to see her, she turned out to be a completely different person than in the pictures she used. She was a lot older and much less attractive than the cute young lady his age that he thought he was talking to... I’m surprised they didn’t video call before the actual meeting. But back then it wasn’t as common I guess.

@@dazzlerwebmy husband’s cousin got catfished by a woman; he drove to her country to see her (he lives in Europe, so it was only 4-5 hours away) when he got to her place she wouldn’t open the front door for him. When she finally did open the door she was not at all the same woman in the pictures. She was older, and let’s say not the same level of attractiveness. So he just turned around and left her standing there without a word, got a room at a B&B and spent a couple of days sightseeing before going back home. He was very disappointed. I wish catfishers truly realized the great amount of harm they do.

A lot of world hunger is caused by communism, fascism, dictators and warlords in third world countries stealing food (it was the cause of Blackhawk Down). We had another case in Australia where a woman impersonated a man who catfished a famous singer in a "relationship" that last 10 years. When the victim realised that the "love interest" was a female that she actually knew she was devastated.

The first case I heard about catfishing was the Renae Marsden case and it impacted me on so many levels. The amount of work these people put to deceive their victims and the incredible psychological damage that they cause it’s horrible. At least Lydia received some punishment but it’s not even enough in my opinion.

My theory: If Lydia had been happy in her own love life she would not have felt the need to bring chaos into other people's lives. She was obviously disillusioned and bitter over failed relationships and got a thrill, an emotional high, from leading people on only to burst their bubble when the timing was right, just as her bubble had burst on her. In middle school, a girl told me a teen idol was her cousin. "Come over. He's supposed to drop by." Showing me pictures of him then dropping the subject when it was time for me to go. I think she enjoyed her short reign of power.
