Dr Drew... he blew my mind so much I couldn't watch the whole interview in one sitting... When he says about we literally feeling in our gut, in our heart, it really made me rethink all I knew about emotions at all! and also, WTF!! I feel a pain right here, ow, that's where my dad used to hit me... I've seen and experienced those kind of things before, but in a church... a scientist acknoledging that and being able to explain? That is something else. I think I'm in love by how humble this guy is... He really deservers the tip of the cap. #MadRespect

Dr. Drew just blows my mind every time I watch him. I thought I was an empath... I absorb other's feelings-anxiety, sadness, etc. When he said, "That's where Dad used to kick me." I was blown away... I've felt other's physical pain as well. I thought that was me being an empath. Anyway, awesome show. Thank you so much.

My mother has narcissistic personality disorder. She has done a lot of messed up stuff to me since I was born. Last seven yrs living w/ her she ignored me. After I moved out & started finally having a good life she would say things to hurt me in a sneaky way. Nothing outright that she could be called out on but she knew how to mess w/ my mind. It got to the point that I would get physically ill every time I started getting ready to go visit her. I'd take XANAX which helped somewhat. But I'd still get a strange,sick,kinda painful feeling in my gut. I finally realized my gut was telling me that it wasn't good for me,my mental health to be around her. Even my husband said to me in the car after a visit,"I don't understand why you keep going around her," I burst out crying because I was raised being treated that way,was so adapt to it I didn't even realize it was wrong or that anyone other than myself would see it as wrong. Listen to your gut. Feeling sick or having pain or sickness in that area whenever you're near someone means your body is telling you something that you (your brain) have chosen to ignore or accept even though it's a unhealthy situation. Who wants to accept that their mother isn't capable of loving them? I sure didn't but it is what it is. She can't help the fact that her father sexually abused her but I can't continue to give her access & information about me that she will twist and use against me to try to destroy me because she decided when I was 4 yrs old that I was determined to steal her man(There's been a few,4 marriages,several live ins). My fault for every one of those relationships not working out,in her mind. It's not just parents that may cause this effect. Beware of anyone that loves you or tells you how great you are within the first meeting. They could possibly be setting you up,gaining your trust to obtain information that can & will be used against you later in the most hurtful ways. If you've already allowed someone like that into your life,don't bother thinking they'll ever change because by the nature of that kind of personality, they'll NEVER see themselves for what they are,therefore never change. Their dangerous,at the very least,life destroying. LISTEN TO YOUR GUT. Wish DR. DREW had been able to expand on the subject more. Its almost like you find yourself being repulsed by the person without knowing why.

I am really fascinated by the idea of genetic/generational trauma...and cellular mindfulness. As a bodyworker and a person diagnosed with chronic autoimmune disease before puberty, I am increasingly convinced that disease is a mindset problem--a story problem-increasingly global--a self-acceptance/compassion problem...and not a problem...all beautiful and perfect. I think myth, story, music, artistic interpretation, intuition is where I find the most useful answers, though they don't always have words.

I believe that too. I have a chronic pain in my left trap that's like a burning sensation that becomes unbearable at times especially over-exertion at work. However, I've noticed that when I take narcotic painkillers for it....it doesnt really take the pain away...until I'm at home. Then sometimes, I dont feel pain at all and have been pain free for a couple weeks and I take an opiate because I have a different pain and suddenly that are starts burning...even if I'm not working and am at home. This to me says that this kind be a psuedopain that doesnt even exist and maybe it's an area where I carry stress/mental anguish/ emotional distress, etc, and mindfulness might be the way to go to resolve this pain....like altering something in my life and literally and figuratively drop the weight off my shoulders and this may resolve itself

Well at minute 21:00 I understand that it’s not exactly disgust that motivates people to change but first one must hang around people that are not the usual people we hang around with. Someone with a different perspective. It’s after hanging out with people with a different view that we can see ourselves differently and therefor feel disgust when we realize our current state (being fat, an alcoholic, a drug user, etc)
@ChrisBarry957 жыл бұрын
Dude, Tom! You read my mind 22:15 when asking about the connection between the notion of you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with and the way Dr Drew described people changing their behavior after being introduced to a new relationship. I think there is something to reference groups- you definitely become like who you hangout with.

Is it weird that the communities that survive oppression through addiction (Ireland, Scotland, Native American Indians, Aborigine) are also the communities with the most prolific and interesting myths and legends, poetry & literature? Is there a connection there?? Keep up the great work Tom, you are legendary!

Totally. If you're not on top of a cultural system...you need to find more than what's currently available here and naturally your brain would try to make sense of this confusing world by offering the idea that there's something better after time on this earth. Look at how strong faith became through Christianity in the African American community during and after slavery. What kind of psycho would not believe in a God if they were chained up for 40 or 50 years....I think you would slit your throat immediately if you thought this was it.

Hi Dr Drew & Tom That was a really profound discussion that I had to break into two parts because there was just so much to take it that was shaking me to my core. There was a quote that came up in a book I am reading called When Breath Becomes Air that posed the question "If the unexamined life was not worth living, was the unlived life worth examining?" With a nod to Socrates and his 'good life'. I feel like this is right in line with Dr Drews philosophy towards life and really digs into our relentless quest for more and more knowledge without an equal balance of experience to imbed the knowledge into. Thank you for having these kinds of conversations and not just mindlessly following pop culture and political correctness, I have huge respect for both of you and you are inspiring me to expand and connect with others vulnerably and walk this fine line between mysticism and myth and prudent scientific methodology and thirst for quality evidence.

Great interview with a super intelligent and very thoughtful subject. Disgust occurs when something assaults our view of what's acceptable and I think is different to self loathing because it's a surprise reaction, as opposed to an already held view. Suggestion: if you can afford therapy, get it. If you have a good therapist you will develop a new relationship ( non romantic) that will replace that old relationship. A good therapist is a friend and can replace that parental role. But they stay in a therapeutic role so you heal.

We are all pure vibration. Reality and self are "all about the relative perspective and proportion of one thing to another." I have been working hard to change aspects of myself--truly disgusted with parts of my life--and also very much loving myself--I fully agree with this distinction between self loathing and disgust. I love myself enough to do the very hard work required to be less disgusting to myself. I lost over 100 pounds twice this lifetime...physical only being a small part of it--more my laziness with communication, my tendency to use others as excuses for not being fully the self I want to be... The last decade or so I have been very aware of how toxic many of my relationships were. Now I grapple a bit with forming new relationships with old friends--finding it easier to try to develop new relationships, yet aware that without inner change I will develop the same relationships with different people...

Fucking love Drew. Like everyone else, a pivotable character in my teen development. So genuine for a "celebrity". Omg. We are building an army! There's a whole category of people, that crosses countries, political spectrum, intellectual philosophy, that are unifying around this idea of what has been lost, because SOMETHING has been lost. I wouldn't say religion, but something religion carried with it, some kind of purpose, some kind of wisdom. This is a new brain worm to think on.

Great as always, Tom. Follow up questions on brains syncing up. 1) Does Drew believe this happens via virtual medium as well, or is it only from physical presence? 1b) And then, what is the range, does it increase past a certain point, eg a person on stage vs a person sitting with you in a coffee shop. 2) Lastly, in transcendental meditation they found that multiple people meditating at the same time had a synergistic effect (google maharishi effect for crime impact study) would this be a similar thing in say, a seminar or watching a comedy in a theater, where an impact is magnified? Are people effectively sitting in each other's wifi field? Random thought: If it IS biological, and not spiritual osmosis that is occurring, I wonder if a certain lifestyle could be synthesized, stem-cell created, and bottled/sold? The quest for legendarity... legenderying... legendarification... continues...

Disgust can go in multiple directions. Motivation is but one possibility. Self loathing is another. AND motivation can come from even self loathing. Hope may be what makes the difference. The stories we learn and tell ourselves and then believe may be what creates hope.
@leahflower9924 Жыл бұрын
The stories we tell ourselves exactly isn't that where it all starts, in psychology they like to call it narratives and you'll have a narrative for not just yourself but everyone else a lot of people that seem paranoid are people that think they know what everyone else is gonna think or do

Sooooooo true. That really resonated with me as well - there's more that we don't know than that we do.

By the way, knowing you read mostly non-fiction, I think you might like Alamut, by Vladimir Bartol as a way of diversifying into fiction. This story blew my mind, the way the main character manipulates belief, faith and perception to become a supreme leader in 11th century Persia. Ascribing to the idea that "Nothing is true, everything is permitted", the main character uses terrifying reason and shifts the way you think about the power of belief.

WE are co-creating the army. I believe that we are working on the "training manual", so to speak. I'm preparing to launch a wave of training "facilities". It'll be a few years yet but, I'm with you guys! #blackbirdsrising
