This is definetly where I can see where Paul's style of playing stopped fitting in the band. Don't get me wrong, the guy's a phoenomenal bass player, Undertow's got some of the best pick-played bass work out there, but Justin had this very post-rock/psychedelic element to his style of playing that really can't be understated in how much it defined all of Tool's post-Undertow work. The bass is as much of a focus in their later work as the guitar, vocals or drums.

This isnt a "reply" to Death's post in anyway, but I thought this is a good spot to toss in a little piece of info that not all TOOL fans are aware of. Using Deathshuck's post as a lead in--> The fact they were young AS A BAND is true. But as far as musicians go, they were fairly mature and near "ripened", as the members themselves were (at or around) 28 years old. Again, this isn't meant a reply to anyone, nor am I sure what(if any) relevance it adds here, lol, but I figured it was a nice little side note.
@Deathshuck
@Deathshuck 9 жыл бұрын
Bray Wyatt Indeed. I think the fact that they were mature adults by the time Tool was in full swing contributed a lot to the fact that they never became victims of the music industry. They were able to steer clear of all the bullshit because they knew how the system worked. It's much easier to keep your integrity when you reach success as an adult, rather than as a teenager, because you get an adult perspective on the whole thing and aren't so naïve.

Well, No Quarter was originally written by Led Zeppelin, and is an instrumental-heavy song. He can only sing what's there. About not facing the crowd, he claims the lights distract him, and dark spaces helps him focus and reconnect to the emotions and energy of the song. In short, he and Tool aren't just some stereotypical band that makes noise for you to tap your foot to. They want their music to be an interactive experience, in which you use as a self-reflective Tool to help you grow. ;)

Even though I love the 1998, 2015 and 2016 live versions of the track because Chancellor's bass makes the song beautiful, I can't help but always go back to this one because the way Maynard went raw running around with his vocals on that @10:05 mark is just amazingly sublime. Like, him holding that note while he was running around like a madman in a circle is just amazing. I know Maynard doesn't do that now due to age, and while he could still sing, it's just something about the madness of his voice in his youth when he used to do that that always makes me grin 😂.

his inner self is being expressed when he performs. hes more in tune with his 'self' than most anyone you will ever meet. your 'self' is more important than than 'ego' (which is portrayed in reality to others; the manifestation of how you percieve yourself). i think maynards understanding of this compels him to humiliate his ego and let his inner self come to life :)

Ill be honest... This is the first time ive ever watched a live video of tool. Or ev8sr seen the members.. But i have seen schisms music video. After seeing the way he moves around. That creepy ass video makes sense now. And so does the rest of the ominous and bleak sound they have. Also... IM PRETTY SURE THAT'S VOLDOS SON

Brilliant...Your words are spot on in respect to the ego vs the self (or disrespect if you choose :P I am never bored with their works, especially the first 3-4 albums... 20 years ago, it was all top shelf , now it's in the legendary library. Thanks dickslang55, for being insightful without the defense and understanding the humor in my question. Thanks for your view...cheers
