Was just talking with my wife about the power in Maynard’s lyrics. I listen them all the time and hearing them, singing along with them……but when I read the lyrics while listening to the music, that’s when the real power and greatness really comes through for me. I don’t know how to explain it, I’ve been listening to this band since I was in the 7th grade and I turned 45 today and there is no other band that still blows me away like it’s the first time….every time.

I had the privilege of hearing them at the age of 9! yes 9 years old! 1993 was a time that I was entranced, mystified and constantly yearning to hear more. Granted they had underground stuff in 1987 when Maynard was with CAD (Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty). To all the people comparing the two versions of this song. Make sure you listen to the entire thing. Tool's cover has an extensive breakdown at the end which completely re-invigorates this song. Led Zeppelin's was the original, and for that respect and acknowledgement is due. But don't let that deafen you to the masterful creation you're hearing. Technically this dwarfs the original, but that isn't worth a dime because we're comparing apples and oranges. The Tool sound is defined by complicated, screeching, melodic riffs and incredible layered drum sequences and poly-rhythms. Versus Led Zeppelin's more rhythmic style, amazing guitar solos and Robert Plants snail trail. Honestly the two bands share a lot in common, Tool has obviously been inspired by Zep to some extent, as has any rock musician in the last 40 years, whether they're aware of it or not.
@racer1112595 жыл бұрын
"Technically this dwarfs the original"... and that is exactly why it sucks!! these guys remind me of a very adept high school band. playing 20 chords were only one is necessary to convey the emotion, the feeling. this isnt even on the same planet as the original. thanks for the laugh though!!

I've always found it weird your have to compare originals and covers in a light. They are in a way different tracks. A cover can easily be better than an original, if you build upon an already amazing track you have to add something. This definitely do. Another great example of a cover done right is Jimi Hendrix All along the watchtower. The original is amazing but it is generally accepted that the Hendrix version is superior. So is this. Open your ears.

That's a bit rich coming from the band who (apart from the Rolling Stones) owe more of their own massive success to covering/borrowing/appropriating/ripping off old blues standards than any other band ever .. as far as I know this is nonsense anyway because anyone can cover anything, they just have to pay royalties to the publishers of course. I don't know where you get your ideas, but a quick search shows up at least 60 Zeppelin songs (over half their total output) covered by various artists over the decades, with most done multiple times in many different styles .. No Quarter alone has been done about 20 times, so basically you couldn't be more wrong :/
@hunterinfected68 жыл бұрын
"Ripping off" is the real stretch here. Influence and inspiration is the right term, Timmy. No blues group produce anything like the Zepp. Don't get me started with appropriation because covering a band is more towards appreciation.

Almost all the songs from Zeppelin IV onwards were original. And IV, Houses of the Holy, and Physical Graffiti are their best albums. Re-contextualizing traditional blues songs wasn't anything new. There was once a day, a looooong time ago. Before I had heard of Salival. I was sitting here, on the ole interweb and a thought occurred to me. Tool covering Led Zeppelin would be the most amazing marriage of progressive rock/metal to ever exist. Soon after I was drooling over the Box Set and wishing I had it. I am sure I ended up downloading the track before finally buying Salival (with the VHS btw LOL) Also, funny enough, this was also my intro to No Quarter all together. I agree with you 100%

@Scot_With_One_T6 жыл бұрын
Me, too! I always somehow feel ashamed of that, but TOOL's version is so much more dynamic and complex. Plus, the ridiculously excellent production value makes it that much better!

Close the door, put out the light No, they won't be home tonight The snow falls hard and don't you know? The winds of Thor are blowing cold They're wearing steel that's bright and true They carry news that must get through, oh They choose the path where no-one goes They hold no quarter They hold no quarter, oh Walking side-by-side with death The devil mocks their every step, ooh The snow drives back the foot that's slow The dogs of doom are howling more They carry news that must get through To build a dream for me and you, oh, oh, oh They choose the path where no one goes They hold no quarter They ask no quarter They hold no quarter They ask no quarter Yeah Without quarter, quarter, yeah (without quarter) Without quarter, quarter, quarter Taking no quarter Oh, oh, oh (hear the dogs of doom) (no, never quarter) I hear the dogs of doom are howling more

@deanml11611 жыл бұрын
Both versions are awesome. LZ's original is bright and psychedelic. Tool adds their darkness and mysterious to make it modernistic. You know it's a good song if it can be manipulated and stand the test of time.

As an avid Led Zeppelin fan, this honestly (imo) is better than the original. Hands down. The chord progression that changes from a cover to Tool’s own sound is Iconic.
@JohnSmith-ws6jg10 жыл бұрын
Obviously you are free to discuss and debate and argue over who's version is better, but without the original the song simply would not exist. There are a lot of covers of this song, probably one of the most "covered" songs in the rock work. There are a lot of awesome versions of it and each version should be responsible for standing or falling on its own. Thank God LZ wrote in the first place and made it such an incredible song that every band has probably at one time or another covered it. Rock on Led Zepplin Rock on Tool.
