I think tool will be remembered by this generation as true music and art in sea of manufactured mainstream music. They have integrity, and their music IS revolutionary. No one can, or ever will sound like them. Not to mention their lyrics are amongst the most profound for any band.

Was just talking with my wife about the power in Maynard’s lyrics. I listen them all the time and hearing them, singing along with them……but when I read the lyrics while listening to the music, that’s when the real power and greatness really comes through for me. I don’t know how to explain it, I’ve been listening to this band since I was in the 7th grade and I turned 45 today and there is no other band that still blows me away like it’s the first time….every time.
@dougrippe33

…… not to mention Adam, Justin and Danny are among the greats of their respective instruments. Put them all together and there’s not really anything this generation, or those that come after, will ever come close to reaching.

@@dougrippe33 39yrs old here and they have been a profound journey for the past 30 years. I had the privilege of hearing them at the age of 9! yes 9 years old! 1993 was a time that I was entranced, mystified and constantly yearning to hear more. Granted they had underground stuff in 1987 when Maynard was with CAD (Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty). But 1990 solidified this absolute gem of a band. 1992s opiate certainly lit the proverbial fire. However in 1993s undertow absolutely enthralled me lol. Anyhow long story short I absolutely understand what you mean , cheers!

I think I read somewhere, that they were approached to do a Zeppelin cover for an upcoming tribute album. They chose this song. When they turn the finished version in, the producers told them to cut the song by 5 minutes. When Tool refused, the producers told them that they would receive the bill for recording. Tool said fine. Thus this was released on Salival.

To all the people comparing the two versions of this song. Make sure you listen to the entire thing. Tool's cover has an extensive breakdown at the end which completely re-invigorates this song. Led Zeppelin's was the original, and for that respect and acknowledgement is due. But don't let that deafen you to the masterful creation you're hearing. Technically this dwarfs the original, but that isn't worth a dime because we're comparing apples and oranges. The Tool sound is defined by complicated, screeching, melodic riffs and incredible layered drum sequences and poly-rhythms. Versus Led Zeppelin's more rhythmic style, amazing guitar solos and Robert Plants snail trail. Honestly the two bands share a lot in common, Tool has obviously been inspired by Zep to some extent, as has any rock musician in the last 40 years, whether they're aware of it or not.

I've always found it weird your have to compare originals and covers in a light. They are in a way different tracks. A cover can easily be better than an original, if you build upon an already amazing track you have to add something. This definitely do. Another great example of a cover done right is Jimi Hendrix All along the watchtower. The original is amazing but it is generally accepted that the Hendrix version is superior. So is this. Open your ears.

Locked in a place where no one goes. They ask no quarter they have no quarter. Lock the door, kill the light no one's coming home tonight It's getting colder (7x) locked in a place where no one goes. Lock the door, kill the light no one's coming home tonight They bring news that must get through. dying peace in me and you Locked in a place where no one goes. We have no quarter we have no quarter we ask no quarter Led zeppelin version Close the door, put out the light. no, they won't be home tonight. the snow falls hard and don't you know? the winds of thor are blowing cold. they're wearing steel that's bright and true they carry news that must get through, oooh They choose the path where no-one goes. They hold no quarter. they hold no quarter. Walking side by side with death the devil mocks their every step the snow drives back the foot that's slow the dogs of doom are howling more they carry news that must get through to build a dream for me and you They choose the path where no-one goes. They hold no quarter. they ask no quarter. they hold no quarter. they ask no quarter. It's crazy how much they changed the lyrics from the original. So much grittier and darker overall. Phrases like "Close the door, put out the light" and "They're wearing steel that's bright and true" have been replaced with *"Lock all the doors, kill the lights"* and *"Dying dreams in me and you"* . It's like a dystopian 'No Quarter', playing out in the mind of someone who's been broken both mentally and physically.

Saying that the original band smokes the cover version? Not such an original statement. I think the whole purpose of doing a cover is to put your own personal fingerprint on a song that moved or inspired you in some way. Otherwise, what's the point? I like this version. That's my opinion.

That's a bit rich coming from the band who (apart from the Rolling Stones) owe more of their own massive success to covering/borrowing/appropriating/ripping off old blues standards than any other band ever .. as far as I know this is nonsense anyway because anyone can cover anything, they just have to pay royalties to the publishers of course. I don't know where you get your ideas, but a quick search shows up at least 60 Zeppelin songs (over half their total output) covered by various artists over the decades, with most done multiple times in many different styles .. No Quarter alone has been done about 20 times, so basically you couldn't be more wrong :/
@hunterinfected6
@hunterinfected6 8 жыл бұрын
"Ripping off" is the real stretch here. Influence and inspiration is the right term, Timmy. No blues group produce anything like the Zepp. Don't get me started with appropriation because covering a band is more towards appreciation.

Almost all the songs from Zeppelin IV onwards were original. And IV, Houses of the Holy, and Physical Graffiti are their best albums. Re-contextualizing traditional blues songs wasn't anything new. Cream, Hendrix, and many many other bands were doing the same thing. Doesn't make them any less great.

There was once a day, a looooong time ago. Before I had heard of Salival. I was sitting here, on the ole interweb and a thought occurred to me. Tool covering Led Zeppelin would be the most amazing marriage of progressive rock/metal to ever exist. Soon after I was drooling over the Box Set and wishing I had it. I am sure I ended up downloading the track before finally buying Salival (with the VHS btw LOL) Also, funny enough, this was also my intro to No Quarter all together. I agree with you 100%

Obviously you are free to discuss and debate and argue over who's version is better, but without the original the song simply would not exist. There are a lot of covers of this song, probably one of the most "covered" songs in the rock work. There are a lot of awesome versions of it and each version should be responsible for standing or falling on its own. Thank God LZ wrote in the first place and made it such an incredible song that every band has probably at one time or another covered it. Rock on Led Zepplin Rock on Tool.
