Yes, drum tuning is a thing. Here's a quote from an interview with Danny: "In the studio I always try to tune the toms to the key of the song. Sometimes this doesn't work to well because all drums have a very limited range that they will resonate and project in, but usually I am able to get close to one of the notes in the dominate triad. Because 90% of Tools songs are in D, I always try to have them tuned to D, F, and A when playing live." The notes in the "dominate triad" are just the notes of the main chord. So if they're playing in the key of D minor, those notes will be D, F, and A. When it comes to Danny you've got to realize a couple things. He studied music for over three years at the University of Missouri and would have earned his degree in percussion, but he an opportunity to go on the road with a band. Years later he studied with Aloke Dutta, a Indian Drum master, learning the system of Indian tabla playing. He's also really in to sacred geometries and even perhaps numerology. This dude is so into his craft it's like a religion to him, and he's a high priest. That's the level that he operates on. For him it's all about expression through his art, and he works constantly to push that art forward, in his own way. By the way, what you guys are doing is really cool. Keep it up! Thanks!

“Tool has been a great story for the channel.” I think this channel has been great for Tool and Tool fans. I’ve been a Tool fan since Undertow and these reactions have increased my enjoyment of Tool’s music so much. To see the joy and pleasure that Ryan and George get from this music has been so fun and has caused me to listen to Tool’s music with fresh ears, too. Such a great KZbin channel!

I never liked that perspective of the lyrics. After starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and finding out Maynard is a brown belt in BJJ, this song takes such a different, humorous tone about the suffering of a white belt at the hands of an advanced jiu jitsu practitioner. Its more of a conversation between the two. "Choke this infant here before me".

Ænima was an absolute juggernaut of an album when it dropped in 96. A couple of tracks from Undertow gave them worldwide acclaim, but this album cemented them as absolute behemoths of progressive metal with mainstream rock appeal. Even the 'filler' tracks were interesting (Message to Harry Manbeck, an angry voicemail left by an italian dude who failed to gatecrash a party, set to some soothing but slightly sinister piano music, for one), nevermind the actual tracks and accompanying music videos. As great as Pushit is, damn near every track on the album is at that level, and has the same complex-but-cohesive feel you guys were picking up in this one

I just came back from my first ever (and sadly, maybe the last) Tool concert in Budapest. They played Push It. I like their newer sound more, from tuning point of view, but my god, it sounded epic live. Also, same thing with Sober. Much heavier than on the album. I have almost exclusively listened to Tool for 15+ years now, nothing comes even close, but seeing them live pushed the whole experience to levels I have never felt before. They finished with Invincible, incredible performance there as well. Pneuma... no explanation needed here. But Descending... put on the cherry on top of the cake for me personally. Never felt anything so immersive before as listening to it live, with closed eyes. I am so grateful that I lived to find them and see them live.

Absolutely tuning drums is a thing. It's a huge part of why Danny sounds different from John Bonham or Alex Van Halen... Different tunings of the heads you hit (batter head) vs the heads on the bottom of the drum (resonant head) can give totally different sounds, and some even go as far as tuning their drums to specific notes. In a band like Tool where 75% of the songs are in D, I'm sure Danny has tuned the whole kit to vibe with that key specifically. This song is partly in D but mostly in A (the second most used key in Tool) which is a very sympathetic key to D. It's a subtle thing most non-musicians wouldn't notice or think about but something that a band like Tool has absolutely thought about.

This song was so instrumental for me when it came to dealing with my personal struggles surrounding religion during my teenage years. The theme of an oppressive relationship, drowning, losing one's self... the confusion rolling around in the sound. And then for it to build and Maynard screaming, "THERE'S NO LOVE IN FEAR!" This single song took so many of my blurry teenage emotions and snapped them into focus. So glad you guys did this track (and got to see the Tool show!). Forever one of my all-time favorites.
