Hey tony, how was your summer fishing season? Hope you landed plenty 🎣. Was hoping you could clarify something for me. A recent fishing report said “fish shallow flats with access to deep water “ how close should the deep water be? 50 75 yards or more? And what do they mean by “access “. I’d appreciate it if you could give me your interpretation of “access “ thanks buddy! Getting ready for my mid October Indiana Muskie trip !🎣🎣
@tonysspotonfishing5 жыл бұрын
Rob Simpson It’s been an interesting year to say the least. Weird weather around here put an end to Muskie season for us for a while with dangerously high water temps. Now temps are back in the safe range and we’re looking forward to getting back to it. Our Summer Bass season was a little different too this year. I’ve never had to do as much “tinkering” with presentations as I have this year. But, hey we caught them. When you hear shallow flats with access to deep water it means that the weed flat is close to or comes out to or even runs down the first main break. Muskies often will cruise that break line to deep water and come up on the flats to feed. It is easier for them to get on those flats when they are close like that. My favorite analogy is like when we are driving down the highway and we are hungry, we see an oasis and we stop and eat. The same is for the fish. They follow those break lines to deep water like a highway and the weed flat is their oasis. The deep water doesn’t have to be anything crazy. 12-20 feet. When you look at a lake map, focus on areas where the contour lines show a steeper break to deep water and the shallow flat is close by, that’s where you’ll find them. Good luck in Indiana. I’ll probably be out that way in Oct and maybe Nov depending on weather.

When you guys head up, especially for overnight double check parking signs. I remember camping on shore a few years ago no problem, but last year in kenosha i got a 30 dollar ticket for parking after 7. Not too bad considering parking prices in chicago though

Hey ran onto your video on how to fillet a salmon. Was glad to see it. If you are eating fish do you prefer pan fried, baked , deep fried or ??
@tonysspotonfishing5 жыл бұрын
Ken Tyler Very Happy to hear you enjoyed that one! Thank you so much for watching this one as well! For the Kings I will prepare them a few ways that I really like. On the grill in a foil wrap on a bed of onions is really good. If you have a smoker, it is really hard to beat smoked salmon. I’ve baked them as well, like on the grill in a foil pack on a bed of onions. I’ve also breaded and deep fried some of the smaller ones...That is awesome! Deep fry doesn’t work as well on the bigger Kings though. Those are my favorite ways to cook up some Kings. I don’t go crazy on seasoning. Little garlic powder and some Italian seasoning in the foil packs with the onions on the grill or oven. If I’m frying them, good ole Shore Lunch breading is still my favorite.

I go to Marquette and I would say I have learned a lot fishing through my years. But your videos are extremely informative. I fish a bait caster and crank baits and zoom flukes. But Im getting through your videos and have learned a lot. Actually surprised you don't have more subscribers. But I want to say thank you. Hopefully you have rigging setup videos for using roe; I am sure you do. But thanks!

Can you give me a general idea as to when the fishing generally starts to get good?
@tonysspotonfishing5 жыл бұрын
Ken Tyler When water temps drop to at least the low 60 degree range. 55 degrees is truly magical but low 60’s works these days. West winds blow out the warm water. Water temps are in the low 70’s to upper 60’s now. Also the moon phase (new moon and full moon get them moving) helps bring them up. Hopefully we get some west winds and we see some fish at the end of the month with the New Moon. If not mid Sep is our next shot with a full moon. If water temps still aren’t there we look to the end of Sep with the new moon.

Thanks that’s exactly what I needed. I live in Milwaukee, we’re neighbors so your required conditions should be identical to mine.
@tonysspotonfishing5 жыл бұрын
Ken Tyler Absolutely, and this show was about Southern Wisconsin and Milwaukee has some great Salmon opportunities. All 6 season of Spot On Fishing, we’ve filmed Kings in Chicago, but I’ve been fishing WI Kings for over 20 years. This year all of our King shows will be filmed in WI. For sure Racine (my favorite) and Kenosha and we will probably shoot one in Milwaukee as well. If you see the film crew around, stop and say hi, man!
@tonysspotonfishing5 жыл бұрын
Ken Tyler Also, looking at the forecast, starting Mon/Tue next week and the following 7-10 days will have western winds. With the new moon on Aug 30th, if that wind forecast comes to fruition, it will be go time for some Kings!
@Dustyfingers5 жыл бұрын
When do you think the kings will be in the root? What kind of gear would you recommend ?
@tonysspotonfishing5 жыл бұрын
Dusty_fingers 66 It all depends on water levels. As we discussed in our number one pick at Racine Harbor, they’ll sit in the harbor till water levels are appropriate for them to enter the river. The million dollar question is when will the Kings enter Racine Harbor? With the full moon just past us, if we get some west winds we could see Kings in the Harbor area by the new moon at the end of Aug. I would say the soonest if water temps on the big lake and levels in the river all come together at the end of Aug, we should have Kings in the Root by the first week of Sep. More then likely it will be mid to end of Sep, but again, water temps and water levels and the moon phase play a HUGE part in that. As far as gear, Salmon Spawn Rods, usually 8’ to 10’ in length. 8-10lb mono and a slip bobber to float the spawn. The Thill spawn floats work the best with the current. If you are running fresh skein, the best set up is the lasso rig. Otherwise for cured spawn a size 2 octopus hook, hooked through the spawn chunk will work fine. Often times anglers will bring their heavy weight fly rods out and use that to drift spawn as well. Thanks so much for watching! Good luck this fall!

Hi Tony where can I get the best spawn sacs???
@tonysspotonfishing5 жыл бұрын
bman42 There really aren’t many retailers who carry them. The best is to catch a female King or two earlier in the run on Spoons and Cranks. Once in a while Henry’s in Chicago will have some. I know Park Bait at Montrose did have some spawn sacks and Skien for sale, but that was about 2 or 3 weeks ago. Those are the only two places that I’ve ever heard of carrying it, but I can’t guarantee they’d still have it now.

Sunrisebait com That's where I get mine. They sell cured salmon roe. Then you can make your own sacs.

Hey Tony any projections for when the salmon will come in this fall?
@tonysspotonfishing4 жыл бұрын
Buzz Playz I don’t think it will be a full blown big run this year. Around the new moon at the end of August when we had a couple days of west winds, we saw a handful of Kings caught just off shore by anglers in boats up north from Racine to Sheboygan. The full moon in early September also had a few days of west winds off and on. Quite a few Kings were caught from Chicago to Sheboygan. With the water temps still being very warm is why I don’t feel we’ll see a big full run. Anytime we get a day or two of west winds, I think is the time to be on the water around either a major or minor activity window in the lunar charts. It’ll be a grind but unless things drastically change and we see a solid 3-5 days (or more) of straight west winds, I don’t think this run will be all that magical. I had high hopes as the Coho action this Spring was amazing! Time will tell how the Fall King run plays out.

Jay Smith Thanks so much! Glad you liked the video. Looking at the extended forecast through Aug 30th, from Kenosha south through Chicago, won’t see much in the way of western winds, but Racine and north will. I have a feeling Racine could be going before the month of Aug ends...provided the weatherman is correct.

Hey, kinda new to fishing, now that im older. is there a rule of thumb for lb test between main line and leader?
@tonysspotonfishing5 жыл бұрын
Doge Cobain For attaching Braid to a Fluorocarbon leader, keeping salmon in mind, the diameters will very but a good rule of thumb is 20-30lb braid to a 12lb Fluor leader will work fine. A blood Knot is a good knot to tie for conjoining lines. For lighter braids we attach a 10-15lb braid to 6-10lb Fluor leaders for other fishing applications. Great question! Thanks so much for watching!
@bongo33045 жыл бұрын
@@tonysspotonfishing so is 20lb braid to 8lb fluor fine? or should i go a little higher test fluor

@@tonysspotonfishing not salmon yet, but big ol cats and local fish to our area
@tonysspotonfishing5 жыл бұрын
Doge Cobain As far as Bass go, if your fishing a drop shot rig or a ned rig, 10-15lb Braid to either a 6lb, 8lb or 10lb Fluor leader is fine. For Spinnerbaits, Chatterbaits and frogs you can run straight braid. 20lb, 30lb or 50lb depending on the amount of vegetation your fishing. For crankbaits we generally run straight mono or Fluoro, but you could run 20-30lb braid to a 12lb Fluor leader. For big cats we usually run 50lb braid to a 20 or 25lb Fluoro leader. Smaller cats we can run 20/30 braid to a 12 leader.

Do you recommend casting equipment for spoons and spinning gear for floats? What about line weight? Kings are bulldogs when fresh. Thanks
@tonysspotonfishing5 жыл бұрын
Ken Tyler Great question! Either the salmon casting or spinning rods in MH will work fine for throwing spoons and larger crankbaits. Not a bad idea to run M salmon rods for smaller to mid size crankbaits. We run 12-14lb mono, Berkley Big Game and Bass Pro Excel lines work great. Both in the low vis green color. For spawn fishing we run our salmon spawn rods. Same brand of lines but lighter weight. Usually 8lb for spawn on the Kings. If the water is churned up we can run 10lb but in gin clear water we’ve gone as low as 6lb. The spawn rods will absorb the shock to run the lighter lines. Here is another show from last year we’d like to invite you to check out. It goes much more in-depth on these topics. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qH_ZmYKansmgbdU Thanks so much for watching! Good luck this fall.

Hey tony, October Muskie madness is upon us. Curious as to where you’re going to target. My buddies and I are returning to the Indiana waters once again. 🎣
@tonysspotonfishing5 жыл бұрын
Rob Simpson Indiana should be AWESOME all Fall. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to run there, also Pewaukee lake in WI is always great in the Fall. The Fox Chain is nice being close to home. The numbers of Muskies in there is just so good and the size is nice too. It’s hard to leave that out. Unfortunately I have to pick my days. I’ve gotten some strict warnings from my doc to take it easy and limit days on the boat to calm waves and low boater activity. I’ve got a MAJOR back surgery on the horizon and I have to watch the impacts my spine takes right now and also how long I’m standing for. We’ll see what the Fall brings for me. Good luck to you and let me know how you do.

Hey Tony, just found your page and subscribed! Great information! We’ve been fishing Kenosha harbor at night but it seems like not many are catching. We don’t have skein and have been throwing spoons and cranks. Thoughts?

Bj Aguado Thanks so much for watching and thank you for subscribing! We truly appreciate it! The Kings have slowed down everywhere after those storms rolled through earlier this week. The strong winds churned the water up bad! Shore anglers have been struggling as the fish are hanging just into the clear water on the edge of the mud line. As the water clears back up the Kings will move back in. West winds help that process along. Unfortunately most wind reports for Kenosha are E/SE. this weekend we see SW winds Saturday turning W on Sunday. Then NW/W/SW most of next week. Potential for a major storm system to come in this weekend, mostly Sunday for now is what I’m seeing. That can wreak havoc on the Kings as well when they’re shallow. Don’t worry, it has slowed down everywhere right now due to weather and water clarities. Things should pick back up next week.
