The Ottawa Senators were applauded for taking a firm stance with Alexei Yashin during the 1999-2000 season. He wanted to be paid 10 million dollars, even though he still was under contract until 2001. This turned out to be the final straw for Ottawa Senators fans. Alexei had three contract holdouts during his 8-season tenure with Ottawa. Toss in being held pointless and swept by Buffalo and Toronto during the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1999 & 2001, and you've got the poster child for the overpaid underachiever.

Just to elaborate on the Messier point: he and Keenan were brought onboard just a couple seasons after they were the captain and coach, respectively, of the NYR who narrowly beat out the Canucks in 7 games in the 1994 Stanley Cup Final. Messier was also somewhat of a consolation prize after the Canucks pursued Wayne Gretzky in free agency and very nearly landed him. Linden was a hero in Vancouver, having played the better part of the ‘94 playoffs with broken ribs and Gretzky even said during his interview in Vancouver that he had no interest in taking the captaincy from Linden which made it sting that much more when Messier got it. I could be wrong, but I believe Linden actually offered Messier the ‘C’ after the room became divided between the two of them but regardless, Linden is an icon in Vancouver and never should have been put in that position. I didn’t like Messier in Edmonton or NYR (the way he lost his mind while receiving the Cup still haunts my nightmares) but I absolutely despise him after his time in Vancouver.

so, the inside skinny on Shayne Corson that you didn't hear in the media. Love him or hate him as a player sure, but apparently he had a habit of hitting on and sometimes having an affair with teammates' wives. He had an affair with Patrick Roy's wife, and that's why he was traded. In Toronto, it was Alex Mogilny's wife. There was western road trip out west that Corson was injured and stayed home... in San Jose, Mogilny (who hated flying) missed that game and flew back to Toronto for "personal reasons"... it was Corson and Mogilny's wife.

The Wings scored on a play where a Detroit player drilled a New Jersey player into the boards, causing an injury to the New Jersey player which should have resulted in a play stoppage, but didn't, leading to said goal for Detroit. Also interesting how half these players spent part of the 1990s playing for the Oilers. I think the Oilers fans had to have booed the front office at some point for the years of misery following their Cup win to start the decade. It's now 2023 and we have only had one Cup Finals appearance since that year. So where does the problem lie? Players? Coaching? Management? Ownership group? Fans? Media? Player development? Scouting?
