I have been sold on these mini-pressure cookers for camping cooking since I once was fortunate enough to go on a guided trek in Kashmir when my guide pulled out a well worn mini-pressure cooker from his pack and proceeded to cook one of the most delicious curries I've even tasted right on the campfire. He fried the aromatics, browned the meat, then added the liquid and spices before sealing the cooker. 20 minutes later, I enjoyed one of the most enjoyable meals of my life.

Good video, I just ordered one of these, and wanted to get a heads-up on how-to use since the top arrangement is different than most other pressure cookers. But makes sense, and it's supposed to be a lot safer as it's self-locking. For the nervous, don't worry, if the main vent were to become plugged, these have a backup pressure release plug located safely under the handle bar so if it lets go it won't go into outer space. Also, as a cook, two things to try: Many stew recipes suggest you shake the meat cubes in flour, before browning, will give a super rich brown and you can put in pepper, paprika, etc. too into the flour... and it will also naturally thicken the stew when it's done. This would be best if you're not using the bag of store-bought stew mix. Also, when cooking meat, especially beef, and especially lean cuts like rump, round steak, or grass-fed .... most pressure-cooker makers suggest you just let the cooker come down to no-pressure naturally rather than trying to speed things up by cooling it or letting the steam out manually.. that's rough treatment and will make the meat quite a bit tougher.

Tye Hawkins Pressure Cooker was pretty much the first one to appear on the market in Australia. Pretty much everyone in Australia had one. They used to be made in England. My late wife got one as a wedding present when she married her first hubby in 1961. My current wife arrived on the scene and it was relegated as a water pitcher in the garden for the chooks and for watering potplants. She didn't like eating out of Aluminium. No problem as we also hae a Stainless Steel one. I used it tonight. My Mum used her old Hawkins Pressure Cooking when she and Dad toured around Australia in their LandRover for years after Dad retired. My Sister inherited it and still uses it and it is 50+ years old. They are a great unit.

I make a beef stew in the pressure cooker (we have a stainless steel one now, haha, all bullshit this aluminium business, bauxite is everywhere in dust, just not in quantities enough to mine) I throw a handful of pearl barley in along with a bit of extra water / stock. Cook for 25 mins or so and you end up with an amazing stew.

It looks really good Mark. I also have two small pressure cookers. Mine are also made in India but they are stainless steel and not aluminum. They are called Prestige Deluxe. I make beef stew and all kinds of things. Also I enjoy just plain old pinto beans and rice also. If I'm traveling I can put the beans and rice in the pressure cooker put the lid on early in the morning let the beans soak all day rinse them add some more water and whatever seasoning bring to pressure and cook 15 minutes and you have a meal ready. They are wonderful to save energy and so quick to cook. I enjoy your videos thanks again. The stainless steel is a little safer especially if you're going to cook something high acid with tomatoes or tomato sauce in it.

Thanks for the nice and informative video about this cooker. Right after I finish watching your video, I am going to order one of these 1.5 litre cookers for myself for cooking on the wood stove at home, (on the edge of the stove and not in the middle of it as I do not want to over heat and ruin the handle). Also I will be taking it on the summer camping trips. This aught to be perfect for cooking the beans and rice better for a single guy. I was always worried about those big ol' aluminum pressure cookers blowing up on me but now my fears are mute. (Plus, they are so dang big.) This one is a beauty. Thanks again!

In the age of the throw away craptastic Instapot type electric Pressure Cookers... it's great to see people keeping the basic ol' Hawkins stove top design alive. They're robust AF..... with seals and replacement pressure relief valves are still available if and when you wear the originals out. I've seen decades old ones at thrift stores etc that a few $ will make as good as new. I use mine regularly at home. they just need a little more standing over/attention than the electric ones.

My wife bought me a Fagor Duo 10 quart stainless steel pressure for Christmas several years ago. It’s a nice cooker but it’s quite large and it’s heavy. The kids have grown up and moved out so I decided to get a smaller one. The 2 quart Hawkins Classic. I really like it but it’s a little too small. I frequently make either beef stew or chicken with potatoes, celery, carrots, and a can of cream of mushroom or cream of chicken soup plus spices and a cup of broth. If I cut two medium sized potatoes and carrots the cooker is borderline too small because the lid fits inside plus I’ve had a few issues with the liquid squirting out of the steam vent. Same thing happened to you on your video. I realize that I am overfilling the cooker so I’m about to order a Hawkins 3 liter hard anodized aluminum XT (the thicker base.) I figure that if I make the same sized batch of stew in a cooker that is fifty percent larger (3 liter vs 2 liter) I shouldn’t have any liquid squirting out. Alternatively, I could just make a smaller batch of stew but I like to have leftovers.

@Dispersed Camper Man, I really appreciate this Hawkins tutorial, as I’m considering making a purchase. I’d like to be able to cook faster in my camper and a pressure cooker seems a no-brainer. I noticed that your pot seems to overflow (juice was on the top, down the sides and on your stove). Is that usual for the Hawkins or is it because your pot was a bit too full? How might I best avoid the mess associated with the overflow you had? Many thanks, in advance.

Instant Pot is nothing more than a glorified electric pressure cooker that takes much space and is basically for people that don’t know how to pressure cook hence all the settings. I have one and 2 of these Hawkins, a 2 and a 4 liter, I never use the Instant Pot, because it takes forever to come to pressure, forever to release pressure and living in high altitude I have to over ride the settings with most dishes. Piece of crap.

Looked good Mark. The leakage you got out the top of the pressure cooker...was that from maybe filling it too full, or perhaps just a bad design lid? Were the potatoes and carrots cooked soft? I'm amazed that cooked in 20 minutes...when I do a beef roast at home in the oven with carrots, onion and potatoes, it takes about 90 minutes for them to get soft. That is a real fuel saver cooking that fast. Hope Jake got some leftovers.

David, No, it wasn't a design flaw. The regular became stuck for a second till I tapped it back down with my finger. It will emit steam every time it lets off pressure. I probably need to not put the gravy packet in it till after it's done cooking. The potatoes/carrots came out perfect. The reason I like cooking in the pressure cooker is it saves on fuel (propane, electricity). It cooks the food under pressure meaning it cooks a lot faster. Jake thought the beef stew was good also.

Dispersed Camper Man Pressure cookers don't do well with thickeners. They bubble inside and out the top or scorch to the bottom. Try cooking all ingredients except the mix. Release pressure, remove the lid and then add the gravy/stew mix reheat and thicken toplessly

Good video. Ever cook beans or rice in your tiny cooker? I've heard the small ones don't hold enough water

I know you can rice, I've never tried the beans. I use a bigger cooker for beans, so I can make several cups to save for the next day.

I'm considering the 3L version which looks taller. I converted an ambulance so I don't have a TON of room, but this looks like a good way to save time cooking

Hey there! I'm glad to see someone using a Hawkins for camping, because it makes so much sense! Have you tried using it over an open fire yet? As a sidenote, it took me a while to learn, but there's a technique to opening the PC without dipping the lid very far into the vessel. Here's a 15 second video on how to do it, in case it was frustrating you too! kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHTCp6qYZqpkoJI

I have not tried the open fire yet. I wouldn't think it would keep a constant heat to keep it at pressure. That's for watching!

Works great over a camping gas burner or a small twig burner such as the Firefox Nano (with a strong support such as rocks or bricks, not sitting directly on the Nano). Keeping the handle away from big flames is important though!

Wow, I might hav'ta try a pressure cooker soon! I was looking into a,electric 9in one pot, space is a issue! Do you do Amazon reviews & links to products?
@DispersedCamperMan
@DispersedCamperMan 6 жыл бұрын
I sure don't do the Amazon link reviews. Maybe in the future. Space is definitely an issue in truck campers. I like the little pressure cooker, cooks enough for me and stores in a small cabinet. Hardly takes up space.

Add the thickener, in this case the gravy mix after cooking. Otherwise it foams up inside and comes out the pressure valve.

that lid with any liquid at all is a mess waiting to happen, you can't take it off without dropping it down in to the contents of the pot

Yes you can, once you get used to it is super easy, I have had the 2 liter for a few years and no problem. Pressure cooker should never be fully filled otherwise it’ll clog the valve, that’s with any pressure cooker not just this one.
