I’d love for there to be a State of Origin Competition. Make the AFL where everyone plays each other once, making 17 rounds. Then have 3 rounds for SoO sprinkled in every 5-6 rounds to create a Round Robin Tournament.

If we ever get a 20 team comp there'll be 19 rounds of everyone playing each other once. Add 4 rounds of SoO (3 round robin + a final between the top 2) and it lines up really nicely with the current 23 game schedule

It died because of the lack of bums on seats. I remember the old days when the League's we're semi professional but when the AFL became the big dog and truly professional everything changed. Can't compare to the NRL hatred of each other.

Not having Buddy play SOO was such a shame, obviously he wore a WA jumper in the U18s carnival, but real state of origin would've been nice.

It stopped because clubs treated there players as a commodity they would get injured and it would affect there season so clubs started putting up vfl level players instead of stars and the attendance dwindled. I would love to see it come back but the inside knowledge I have is the players association is completely against it.

AFL fans would just start complaining that Origin is taking away from the AFL premiership, clubs would pull key players out for fear of injury in Origin. The only reason NRL's Origin series is still going is because it makes the game a lot of money.

Each year a WA, SA and Vic All State side needs to be selected. That would start the thought process of fans. Get coverage of it in news and telecasts. Next step is recruiting guys a year later, so they have a connection to their State and the fans also seem them as locals, even after they've been recruited interstate. Then work out what States play. WA Vic SA NSW/ACT Qld/NT (not sure how Tassie fit in). Set a time in the year. I reckon preseason. Clubs say that players aren't ready to play competitive footy preseason. But they still play practice matches and the AFL in effect are pushing the season back to accommodate State of Origin. So they need to tell players if they don't play Origin, then they don't play round 1. Or if that's too tough. They won't be considered for All Australian honours. Make the money big for the players and include insurance for players. So if they do their knee, miss the year and then get delisted. The AFL will assess and compensate the player. The AFL player needs to know that there is a fall back if they get injured. Clubs also need a fall back in that if they get injuries, they can use a special draft to recruit more players in or trade with another club. The AFL will then provide compensation to those clubs through players and squad sizes. See the AFL need to be committed. They need to support the players and support the clubs. They need to forge links with the public the players and their origin states. They need to work out fixturing. My idea is a lighning carnival over 2 weeks with shorter matches and double headers. Would rate extremely well on TV, get crowds and not put too much pressure on players as they're playing much shorter game time. At the same time, the clubs would still be doing preseason matches. So someone could get injured in pratice match or in an Origin match really.

I think the problem in footy when compared to nrl is really that AFL is really considered the pinnacle of footy whereas a young league player growing up dreams of playing state of origin. Not to mention the real hatred between qld and nsw in the games which I’m not sure wa or sa vs vic would replicate

This is why we should have a state of origin comp..... Also don't agree with this is where they played they are eligible for that state team I believe that if you were born there then you play for that state.... Other wise tex should be playing for Adelaide.... See Tex has now played 17 yrs in SA and has 3 kids who are south Australian and has now spent more time here then he has in broken hill

That allies line-up is a spicy combination mate. Very nice!!! South Australia I'd say would be a dark horse team amoungst the rest. Alot of unpredictability in that line-up. Western Australia would most likely be the bottom end team but genuinely would surprise a few in actual game time. Could seriously explode on any given day. Bloody oath that Vic team though. Your not wrong saying that's a AA side there. Sheesh. Curnow, Cameron, Larkey and Green in a forward line is beyond lethal

A follow up vid about the origin of State of Origin in Aussie Rules is needed. It began in the 1870s. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Representative_matches_in_Australian_rules_football Also it died off for several reasons. 1-in the 90s WA were basically the Eagles side, SA was mainly the Crows taking on a powerful combined Vic side. With the introduction of more interstate sides, the AFL arguably became a state of origin each week. 2-Clubs not wanting to release players with the potential for injuries and missing large parts of the AFL season. See Tony Hall who missed the remainder of the season after being tackled by his Hawks teammates in the SA v VIC game of 89. Especially now when players are worth over a million a year. Clubs don’t want them sitting in the stands come finals time. 3- the criteria for selection changed ever year so playing for the jumper meant nothing. One year it would be the state you grew up in then the next year it would be the state you were drafted from and at one point it was the state you are currently playing footy in . Under these changing rules Polly Farmer played for WA and Vic, Wayne Carey played for both NSW and SA. No one dreamed of playing for the Alllies as a kid and playing them meant nothing. It works in the NRL because only 2 states really play Rugby League. They have built up a healthy Ford vs Holden like rivalry. And when you start introducing BMWs and Nissans into the mix it soon loses its appeal. Every introduction to AFL has been copied by the NRL a year or two later. AFL footy Show, finals systems, AFLW. The only thing the AFL has taken from the NRL is the Gather round.

What went wrong? Having multiple states doesn't work. WA vs Vic was massive initially. Then SA vs Vic, What about all the other states. Then the AFL preferred that Australia played Ireland. And put more emphasis in trivial and pointless preseason cups. Players were made unavailable. Players get recruited to AFL so young. If AFL recruits were 20 year olds, then the fans and players have a closer allegiance to their State. All States need to play, but how. So AFL stopped caring and lacked imagination about fixturing and setting a plan. There is a solution but the AFL players assoc and clubs need to buy into it and commit.

Plenty of great highlights to watch 1977 WA vs Vic. The early-mid 80s matches in Perth when Perth shut down on a Tuesday afternoon and kids skipped school. Some thrillers. Then SA vs Vic famous clashes in Adelaide. Then the famous match at the MCG where Vic picked Lockett and Dunstall (Qld) at full forward. I think Daniher Brereton and Ablett may have been roaming around too. All stars. Then AFL competition went into full swing. Clubs made players available. AFL wasn't committed to it and lacked imagination in scheduling. Then it folded.

Best time of the year is crucial. I reckon either preseason. Players have to be available to play. They don't play practice matches to avoid wear and tear. Shorter matches and double headers. For example it could be matches on Friday Saturday and midweek. With finals the following weekend as a double header. People that whinge on injuries, remember that AFL had AFLX and all those practice matches, that AFL stars were forced to play in and they meant absolutely nothing. Surely double headers of matches that last 60 minutes would be fine. Perfect lead in. Doesn't clash with AFLW either. Other alternative is between preliminary and grand final. A week of Origin matches and double headers on the weekend before the grand final. Could be done Wednesday to Tuesday and fit in 2-3 matches per team. Disadvantage is that grand final team players are unavailable. Some guys will be travelling or in operations after season. Anyway AFL get it done.

Growing up in Canberra and now living in Newcastle, I’ve always been jealous that AFL doesn’t have SoO. It could be really special if it was done properly. Make it worthwhile for the players. Imagine whole states coming together for the same team. Everyone against Victoria. I would love that.

Its all about finding the right time for the competition. I reckon pre season and if players are unavailable then they miss round one. No practice matches for those players either. I'll say more later, but that's how it needs to go. Next factor is the actual states playing and fixtures.

That is ridiculous, all you would get is a group of players who go out for a bruise free jog around the park. It would interest nobody who cares about the quality of the game. Players would just fake injuries to get around the over bearing rules anyway. The AFL needs to realise that the concept is dead.
@paulgazzola

A round robin comp between the 4 teams in October would be better suited. Less anxiety about picking up any niggles right before the season starts.
@BDub2024
@BDub2024 11 ай бұрын
@@paulgazzola Allies are dead and buried by the sound of it. Now conflicts with AFLW season. Players are forced by PA to have 6 yo 8 weeks off. So that time is blocked unfortunately. Pre season you just make guys not be able to play preseason arranged matches. Then there is less scope for clubs to whinge. Fact is that if theyre in full training and doing practice matches they're at risk anyway. In 2022 Eagles got Sheed and Chesser with season long ankle injuries in a scratch match. Then I think Cole did it in a scratch match the folowingweek. All 3 missed the season. So I woud favour shortened Origin matches. Equivalent of two halves. Have as double headers.
@BDub2024
@BDub2024 11 ай бұрын
@@paulgazzola Also Allies is dead and buried. So would need Qld NSW in it. Both are quite strong now. But there needs to be compensation for players who get injured and a year later are delisted or have their contracts halved. AFL if they're serious just have to be fair and get it done.
@BDub2024
@BDub2024 11 ай бұрын
@@spindoctor6385 If you want Origin footy, then no one will want injuries regardless. It will start with a bit of bruise free footy, but over time you get rivalries that build. Making games shorter have the benefit of multiple matches as you'd have six teams playing each other. You could have groups of 4 and 2 (or 3 and 3). But in the end you need to have a fair situation where there are a few matches. So matches need to be much shorter and then with matches every 4 days say... reduce risk of injury.

The problem is a Vic B team would also be super strong, players like Oliver, Anderson, De Goey, Cerra, Taranto (sorry Kane), Papley, Dunkley, Liberatore, Daniher, Langford, Hawkins just to name a few who would be in the B team.
@spindoctor6385
@spindoctor6385 11 ай бұрын
I don't mind naming the teams, that is always an interesting endeavour, but the concept is dead aa far as playing actual games. It works for Rugby league because there is a genuine state rivalry with just about all players coming from just two states. The "Allies" is a ridiculous attempted solution to one of many obvious problems. The structure of who plays who and when is too much to overcome, with at least four teams you need to have three weeks to have a genuine competition and even then that resticts any genuine rivalry building up between the teams.

As someone that got introduced into the NRL first, I can say Origin is amazing. But, it shouldn’t mean clubs lose these players during the season and are impacted by that. There’s a lot to figure out besides just that, but it’s something I never liked about it.
