Why dont you factor in the fuel cost per gallon. One uses premium while the other uses regular. If miles per gallon is your interest, then include the cost per gallon/mile for the actual Mpg/cost total. It doesnt matter if truck X goes one more mile per gallon when Truck X uses a more expensive fuel per gallon.

So many love to hate on the Tundra but considering it’s age it’s still viable option especially if you’re looking at long term. I get around 17-18 mpg open road and around 12-13 pulling my boat. I feel the mpg is not as bad as most perceive especially compared to other V8’s.

@@ryansheard8092 Anyone who knows enough about the V8 trucks knows how fuel efficient they can be when you're not driving like you stole it. My 5.0 averages 22hwy(23 indicated until I corrected the computer) at 70. I towed a friend's Nissan Altima on a car dolly across Florida and averaged 17-18. A 5.0 F-150 XL 2WD would handily top the Tundra's number doing this. However, they are up at an altitude that just sucks your mpg so it would definitely be shit, but I would bet it would easily top 11mpg.

@@jldude84 IIRC, Engines do better at higher altitudes since the less dense air means less fuel is required, which leans fuel mixture out, there's also less throttle friction, and the air resistance is less since the density of the air is lower. That being said, I drove a brand new 2021 5.0 XL F150 loaner and it averaged about 18~ through mid-Florida with no tow weight-- it was also a brand new, non-broken in engine-- the new V8s are absolutely more fuel efficient then the Tundra's old (but reliable) V8.

It tows a 3-horse trailer easily (11mpg) and It manages 18mpg hwy (empty) with a 4.88 posi w/600hp to the flywheel. It’s tech and design is dated but so is every other 10 year old truck. I’ll take the Tundra even without the test. Between reliability and cost it seems like a no brainer. I don’t mind occasionally having to work on a truck, but if I had to use the shop for 100% of repairs a Ram would have me with a 3rd mortgage (the second is for fuel). I won’t own another Dodge Ram product again. I don’t care about the sales hype about the new ones. I get 2 miles per gallon less on the highway towing than normal driving, with a 4.7l engine. From what I am told the Toyota with a 5.7l gets 15-16 mpg, which would be a huge improvement for me. My brother switched his business and personal trucks about 15 years ago to Toyota, will not go to any other brand. They haul granite quite well he says.

Well its pretty simple, my 02 durango has the 4.7L 286ci v8 in it and it gets like 13 to 15mpg depending on conditions and what im hauling. My buddy has the next gen up durango with the 5.9L 360ci v8 engine and it gets substantially better mpg than my 286, but its because its a bigger engine that uses more fuel yes but makes more power so it doesnt have to strain as hard to haul the weight of the truck so the engine is not struggling as hard making it more efficient. Same principle for the trx, way more hp so less strain to haul so it doesnt need to grunt to pull the trailer load so although it got a tiny bit less mpg, the benefit in immediate power on tap makes up for the 1mpg difference. Its trx all day for me, im a mopar guy and this just helps my case lol and for those griping about the price tag, my buddy has a 2019 gmc sierra 1500 limited that he bought for around 60,000 and the truck has already blown a transfer case rear main and it was the wrong seal put in from factory after we looked closer at the old busted seal. The truck has also had the A/C go dead in it already, then just out of nowhere start working again, the package wheels and tires the truck came with from factory rubbed horribly on the upper control arms and caused the tires to need replaced early and he had to add wheel spacers to stop the rubbing from the offset of the wheels being wrong from factory. The tailgate sometimes likes to fall open if you dont shut it with the power of heaven and earth combined which is fun with almost 1,000 dollars in fishing rods(not even counting my massive tackle box packed full of lures) in the back with a livewell cooler full of 25 gallons of water just waiting to demolish somebodys hood when it drops the tailgate randomly and tries to discount me of my fishing equipment on the interstate. An extra 10k for reliability is nothing when 60k gets you a truck that rubs tires from the factory package.

You need to watch Stephen’s video about mpg vs l/100km (or gallons/100 miles) mpg is not a linear measurement. Ie: 1 mpg difference between 10 to 11 is much different than 1 mpg between say 25 and 26 mpg. Just food for thought

Love the way you guys are so scientific with everything and you dona great job. But in saying that showing the swat with and with out the weight distribution hitch was kinda misleading. No you may have already set it up prior but when installing those systems especially that style there are steps to measure and set up where the brackets and such go to give you the best performance for the combination you are using . With the older systems you used to just go up or down a "link" to adjust the distribution. The style you were using is no where as simple but the stability that systwm offers is far superior to the old chain style

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who has towed a trailer. The TRX has two extra gears to help the engine run more efficiently. The Toyota only has six gears so is downshifting to higher RPMs to maintain speed than the Ram. Don't forget the Tundra's 4.30 axle ratio is keeping the RPMs up. When you've got the cruise set, the Ram's blower isn't shoving tons of air in, so you don't have to shove tons of fuel in with it. What should be embarrassing to Toyota is that the Tundra's payload is LESS than the TRX drag-truck. Hell, you can get a Tacoma with as much or more payload. That's just sad. My 2013 Nissan Armada SUfriggenV has more payload than either of these trucks, and more towing capacity. Oh, and did I mention air suspension. PUHLEEZE.
