November 12, 2019 - Canadian hockey and broadcast legend Don Cherry (who is 85 years old) was fired after 38 years as a broadcaster by Rogers Media who own Sportsnet because Cherry wouldn't apologize for admonishing new Canadians to wear poppies. (wearing an artificial poppy is a Canadian and British Commonwealth tradition every November 11th to honor and commemorate military personnel who died in war, the tradition began in 1921)

I was born in Scotland and we came to Canada when I was 6. I was one of the you people he meant for chastising them for not wearing a poppy. I was also one of the you people who should have never been offended by this. Don Cherry was right in that I should have been wearing a poppy in remembrance of our soldiers.

@@terrywright9765 yup no excuse on my part ..I'm thinking I'll probably top up my xmas donation to my church this year as a way of making amends..I also noticed this year they are selling electronic poppys I think this is a great idea for people like me who either buy one and lose it and people who work in IT or work on a computer ..come to think of it buying a poppy screen saver for your phone would also be a good idea for the Legion if they were looking for new revenue streams

His singling out of one group is where he gets into trouble. It's offensive to immigrants who DO wear the poppy of which I know many, and it's letting people born here who don't wear it off the hook. I still personally think Don Cherry was wrong to say what he said, and I think if he didn't have a history of this kind of thing the network would have looked past it, as they have in the past. This all said, I don't think anyone should obviously paint this like it's all Don Cherry is, the man does a lot of good as well.
@relimic

@@Kyt2024 If you wear the poppy, then he wasn't talking to you. How can you imply he singled out one group. You know he was talking about anyone came here, including Irish Scottish white black yellow it doesn't matter. If you enjoy the freedoms of Canada and came here for them, then you should be grateful to the people who died so you could and you should also have no problem pitching in $1 to do that which also goes towards the suffering vets that our PM doesn't give a rats arse about.

@@relimic one group as in immigrants. I've said multiple times here in the comments that the point people should buy poppies is a fair one. He undermined his own point and created this mess by making it about immigrants and not just saying everyone needs to do better. This is not an immigrant problem, it's a problem amongst many groups.

Don't you agree Immigrants are not accepted by the locals due to cultural and racial difference ? Pretty sure 99% of people who moved to Canada did not hate Canada or Canadian culture, so no need to tell them you like our milk or honey ( Pure derogatory ). Instead of using a well known term used by racists all over world "YOU PEOPLE" he could have said something that focused on educating immigrants on the significance of Poppy in Canada.

His rant about “you people” not wearing one might be related to not being informed about it. The poppy culture isn't universal. Born Canadians should teach immigrants their culture and values before criticizing that immigrants don't know it. I'm sure 99% of the immigrants will commemorate every single national symbols

"You people, you come here, you like our milk and honey, the least you can do is buy a poppy." Why pick specifically on immigrants? Does every person born in Canada wear a poppy? No. Do immigrants trying to build a new life in a new country maybe have higher priorities to focus on in the short term, like getting a job, finding a place to live, maybe learning a new language? Yes. If he'd addressed his comments to any and all Canadians who don't wear poppies, he'd still have a job. He didn't. Few Canadians are familiar with it at first hand, and I daresay even among French speakers living in Quebec few know it well versus what it was like 50 years ago. The same goes for any part of the country well away from population centres except for a few established tourist areas (Prince Edward Island for example). If you were hinting at a dislike for French Canada, I'd respond that it's safer to say he doesn't care for French-Canadian nationalists and separatists.

@@joescott4778 He was very right to expect that newcomers show respect for a most important tradition, one having to do with honouring war dead. If I moved abroad I would certainly do the same thing. Even as a visitor I would do it. I take it that if you moved to a conservative part of the Islamic world you would not consider it fine to drink in your front yard. Nor would I. But you people-oikophobes is a good word for you-have double standards. He should have been told to address new Canadians in order to clear up any misunderstandings (i.e. that he did not intend to generalize unfairly, and that native-born big-city Canadians were equally on the hook if they failed to wear a poppy), but an apology was unnecessary. It is very plain around this time of year that poppy-wearers skew heavily native-born because it is quite easy to tell from speech if one is a native speaker. (Yes, I talk to strangers of all kinds all the time, partly out of necessity but mostly out of an unusual inclination.) I say all this as someone who could fairly be suspected of being anti-Canadian myself, for my immigrant friends and romantic partners from five continents have vastly outnumbered my Canadian-born ones (say, 4 to 1) ever since late boyhood. I have no preference, it just worked out that way. I think it's they who choose me, not the other way around. Lastly I will point out that I was never a fan of Don Cherry during his broadcasting career (for all the usual reasons) and during the days when I still watched hockey I always found something else to do in the first intermission. Best wishes. 😊

As a German born woman who immigrated to Canada as a 21 year old and I feel Don Cherry is a racist. First of all, as a German I would never wear the "Poppy" because I feel I would dishonour my grandfather in WW1 and my father in WW2. My Grandfather and my father were drafted into the German Armies to fight whatever war there was. So, how dare you Don Cherry because most Canadian soldiers were not drafted into the Military during WW1 and WW2 but actually had exactly been the opposite.
