I friggin loved basically all of Capaldi's run so of course I also loved Twice Upon a Time. I hadn't really thought how the previous two regeneration stories were really wrapped up in continuity and were forced to wrap everything up and slap a regeneration on top. Whereas here I went and saw Twice Upon a Time in the theater with two of my friends who had seen none of Capaldi's run, and they were able to really enjoy it with only an explanation of who all the companions where just in case they showed up. That would not be possible at all with Tennant's and Smith's regenerations. In this instance, the regeneration alone is enough to carry the story, which is nice.

Thank you for this! My only quam with Twice Upon a Time is the forced sexism of the 1960's into the Doctor from that era. He was not like that at all. While the "jolly good smacked bottom" is a quote as you said, it was in reprimanding his own granddaughter, not because she was a girl but because, as you mentioned, he viewed her as still dependent on him.

I really disagree tho. I think a lot of his runs have been really strong. And they've frankly aged more than the RTD stuff. Sure, some stuff is bad, but it's much more complex than "He's bad at all of x and good at all of y."

I am curious if you have watched any of Moffat's other works, because I hold a similar opinion to the person you replied to. It is important to note that Moffat is not the "end-all-be-all" for the episodes/shows he writes for. He is part of a team of writers, and that collaboration helps him refine his ideas. However, even with that in mind, I would still say there is a noticeable difference between him show-running and writing for single episodes. In the long form, there are plot points that tend to be established well but then lag behind or just dropped in at odd times and wrap up abruptly. It feels like a lack of focus or just a rushed payoff to these kinds of story threads (loose or otherwise). His work on the one-off episodes feel more cohesive and better handled within the context of the episode(s) and wider plot. Perhaps the time constraints and/or limited budgets (on a single episode) allow him narrow the scope of the writing and really solidify interesting concepts and not get "carried away". I will agree he has his ups and downs, and that the "x to y" summation is a hasty generalization people use against him, but I really do think he does his best work in the short form, and more constantly too, when compared to the long form.

None of ur' Business m8 I agree. Moffat's main problem was him trying to set up multiple series long mysteries. "Who is Riversong?" "Why are there cracks in the universe?" "Who are the silence?" "What is Trenzalore?". He sets up too many mysteries and ends up making unfulfilling conclusions. This problem wouldn't exist if he just wrote episodes and wasn't a showrunner.

About damn time someone actually reviewed the damn thing instead of spouting off nonsense about political and sexist bullshit that ultimately means nothing to the show its self! Thank you so much, Quinton. This was all i needed
@GreenSharder
@GreenSharder 6 жыл бұрын
Well that depends what you mean by “sexist bullshit”. If you mean people saying the doctor can’t be a woman, they aren’t correct, there was never anything saying a regeneration couldn’t change their gender. Regeneration was sort of an in the moment decision. It wasn’t something that was ever supposed to even happen. The producers were worried the first doctor was too old, how do they fix it, new body, new actor. However, calling that sexist is disingenuous. This is something new and sometimes new things can be scary. If you’re on the end of the political spectrum that is calling people sexist, imagine if stuff like The Gems became confirmed as men, or the actor of Harry Potter or Sherlock became a menist. It would undoubtedly be difficult to accept, especially if those people openly wanted to insert their politics into the show. And that’s what’s happening here. It’s changing an established character, and warping these beloved moments by overshadowing them with a blob of bringing the real world unnecessarily into an reality that has been used for escapism. And that’s not what Doctor Who is about. I mean, the last series in my opinion was utter rubbish because of this. We had a ham fisted lesbian romance with Bill and whatshername because the people writing the show wanted to show that they were in support of lesbianism and it left a bad taste in my mouth that they had created a character just for that. Because apart from the last 2 episodes, Bill was the blandest character possible. All I can tell you about Bill is her age, her gender, and her sex because anything else is forgettable or not established. Hell, I can tell you more about the characters that featured in one episode, because they have to have a motivation in order to establish the episode. And this isn’t about women, because we had the Sarah Jane Adventures, which was basically a female doctor who, and that was good, and had a high audience and critical reception. It’s about motive. Yes you could make the doctor female, but why? There isn’t any need to. It could even backfire so horribly, that we never get a good female doctor because it was done so poorly. You might even make everyday people anti-feminists because you ruin the show by inserting feminism. How can you not see that you are just being a detriment to your cause And a detriment to other people, by inserting something from the real world into fiction? Have you forgotten the massive sub count Sargon and all them got from gamergate when they did this with games? You are shooting yourselves in the foot to the point where you have the president of the biggest western powerhouse openly denouncing you.
@ShawnsLegacy
@ShawnsLegacy 6 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with that. When i said i'm glad to see someone review this without bringing up political and sexist bullshit, i was actually referring to the BS the show tends to spew most of the time. Like, for example, the numerous times that Bill and Clara took jabs at men, or the several occasions the doctor went out of his way to bring up Donald Trump and political issues in general that ultimately boiled down to "hey, we don't like that thing! stop doing that thing, pretty please~" In all honesty, those issues have been brought to light plenty of times. I've seen them time and time again, and i animatedly despise the direction the show took ever since season 5. And that's why this review is something i really needed out of the doctor who community. I've heard the same opinions and critiques repeated over and over again, and seeing someone with a different perspective and a unique way of looking at the show is just... Refreshing. Like i said, i really don't like the direction the show took ever since season 5. It was just too damn goofy for my taste. But hearing nothing but the exact same opinion i hold being repeated ad nauseum is just, for lack of a better word, toxic. I'm not one to pick sides, especially when it comes to issues of current year. In all honesty, i find both sides to be just as stupid in their own ways. And doctor who was a way to escape for abit and stop having to hear all that crap. So, seeing someone review an episode like this on its own merit rather than bringing up issues with previous episodes just kinda remind me of the good'ol days of the show, i guess.
@GreenSharder
@GreenSharder 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Pretty much. It wasn’t just Bill and Clara either. Any Time Lord that regenerated was instantly said something that boiled down to “Aren’t men arrogant and stupid lol, so glad I’m a woman now.” It’s really annoying too, because it’s something me and my dad watched when I was a kid, and the only thing we still watch together now, and it’s started pandering to this new audience of far left women and killing off it’s male audience, exactly the same as when it started pandering to the casual U.S. audience with the way too hyper, lowest common denominator humour with the eleventh doctor’s series, all the way through to the second to last series, after which he got a solid less irritating and more British personality, at which point, they killed him off, which has been a pattern recently. Even David Tennant, who got a long period of time as the Doctor, didn’t actually have enough episodes to create a lot of interesting scenarios after they properly established his character. They still got pretty lucky because the first episode was fucking astounding and they managed to almost instantly create his groundwork with the help of David Tennants acting. But we’re at the point where I don’t even know if there’s ever going to be another astounding Doctor. I fear it’s caught a sort of Simpson’s illness where it’s constantly stabs itself in the foot because it takes too many risks after having had such a critically successful series and frankly not being able to live up to it. I mean, unless the BBC funnels a ton of money into it, I just don’t know if it’s possible.
@ShawnsLegacy
@ShawnsLegacy 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, i don't think the problem with the series as it is now is that it's taking too many risks. Quite the contrary. You see, i'm willing to bet that that group of dudes in that small room over at BBC HQ saw all the feminists and SJW's meandering around and thought "hey, that's a big crowd of morons! let's get alittle of their money, ey?" And thus, the current problem we're facing. As for the whole pandering to the American audience problem that Matt Smith's era had, i think that was due to how well it did when the David Tennant and Christopher Eccleston era's aired on the SyFy network
@GreenSharder
@GreenSharder 6 жыл бұрын
I feel like strangely enough you could apply the same reasons Dr. Who is failing to the reasons Canada is failing, only Canada is less important outside of Canada. And by taking risks I meant moving away from the source material to find a new audience, not actually taking risks with the story, but taking risks by dumbing it down to a lower audience for the majority of the eleventh doctors stories and imposing more of an arc where there only needs to be a few. Like how you need to see every episode to understand the situation, which happened less back in the day because of on demand, and even with David Tennant they had fewer, despite having one story over multiple episodes. I guess that’s more the fault of the liberties on demand television allows though.

Moffat is responsible for both my favourite and least favourite series of the revival of doctor who, series 9 and series 7 respectively. He has his flaws as a show runner, mostly stemming from season long arcs that went nowhere, were left to speculation (such as the hybrid in series 9 which along with sleep no more are my two least favourite parts of that series) or were disappointing. That being said as a script writer he is my favourite, heaven sent, even from Moffat haters, is considered to be one of, if not the best episode of the series as a whole, personally it’s my favourite revival story and 3rd favourite story behind the enemy of the world and the caves of androzani. He, along with the actor himself, managed to turn my scepticism of the casting of capaldi into one of sheer gratitude, he’s my favourite revival doctor now, and as a whole is only outclassed by troughton. I’m gonna miss him and I hope he writes again for the series in the future, Chris has some massive shoes to fill and his previous episodes, unlike Steven’s before taking over, aren’t considered classics.. I barely remember dinosaurs on a spaceship or 42. However if he can write with the same emotional depth as he did in Pond Life then I will be very happy indeed.

That Steven Moffat has written some bad stories, agreed. Hell Bent for example, wasn't what I hoped it would be and even though it had some elements I liked, it did dissapoint me. But that Moffat can't write good episodes is bullshit. I mean, look at the meeting between 12 and Davros. That was a great moment and brilliant. And many other stories from both the Capaldi and Smith era, are wonderful. I am also glad you don't focus too much on the First Doctor's sexist comments, as that is not what the episode is about, which I''ve had endless discussions about with people, telling them there is more to focus on than that, like the beautiful shot of the First Doctor going back inside his TARDIS while the sun rises in the background or the little moment he talks about leaving Gallifrey. Beautiful moments and most of it, I would say, is a nice tribute to Hartnell. Not all of it, but most of it.

I found myself unusually connected and invested in the soldier character and I really liked Gatiss' performance. Some of the effects were pretty dodgy and the Dalek section felt a little out of place, but those are moreso small missteps than anything else. On the subject of Moffat I find myself oddly torn. I admire a lot of his scripts he wrote under Russel T Davies' tenure. The Lonely Child arc and Blink are probably some of the best episodes that Who's ever had. And even with him as head writer, more recently, he made Heaven Sent, an amazing piece of television that exploits Capaldi's capturing performance even when completely alone. That being said, Moffat seems to have generally adopted a more confusing and less engaging style of writing since he became show runner. So many of his plots seem needlessly complicated just to be complicated and spend so much time of exposition that it's difficult to invest in anything else. Characters feel poorly developed, especially those for one off episodes, there's still some characters that hit moments but they're fewer and further between than I'd like. Do I think he's out of steam? Maybe. Season 10 was largely fine to good for me, maybe a 6/10 (which is good considering). And although I might feel some relief at seeing him go and getting an entirely new Doctor (I don't mind it being a her now) and a Head Writer it's also undeniable just how much he's contributed to the success of the show in modern day. Under his tenure Doctor Who became much much bigger overseas (outside of the UK) where previously it had very rarely expanded beyond the shores.

There was a crowd shot of one of the convention clips in your video, where I saw a girl cosplaying as a weeping angel in the audience of a panel. I imagined Moffat and crew maintaining perfect eye contact with just her, unblinking, for the entire panel, and it gave me a chuckle.

Honestly, I don't dislike Moffat because of the quality of the episodes, I dislike him because the dialogue is always so snarky, unsubtle, condescending, preachy and on-the-nose. I can feel his ego dripping off the TV screen. The man clearly thinks he's on top of the world. He's the Rian Johnson of Dr Who. But, like Rian Johnson, he's talented and no idiot. If he had pulled his head out of his arse more often, I'd have been able to stand him

You should see that video titled "Steven Moffat interview he wants you to forget" by stuffthefrankie where it had those interviews of Steven Moffat from a magazine publication during the 90's and he gave the classic series with the exception of Tom Baker a bashing. It's particularly rich when he pans the Virgin New Adventures books for things he is guilty of as well.

This will have been said countless time by now, but Moffat is excellent at writing episodes of Doctor Who. He's is, however, profoundly lacking when it comes to his ability to write/manage seasons. He just doesn't know how to tell a compelling story over that long a span. He's awful at it, and should never have been put in that position. People's animosity towards him isn't stupid or hypocritical, as you claim. There is a huge difference between being a writer and being head writer/executive producer. He's very good at one thing, and very bad at the other.

the 12 regenerations are now being thrown right out the window. Jodie is the 13th doctor, after her there can be no more, but will the bbc honour this if she sucks as badly as she is a t present? When I first saw the new who, it was so different to what I was used to I thought it was a new show, and they were going to reboot and go back to 1, which would make Jodie the 5th doctor, but no, it's continued and she is the 13th, so unless she possesses someone's body, like the master did, to continue her regenerations, it's over. But for me new who finished with twice apon a time. this is another series of who, Doctor Who - Time Lady

I still don't understand how the Doctor "Adjusted the time-frame" to make the Christmas truce happen earlier and save the captain. He says he did something, but it makes no sense. Did he trick the time travelling machine into letting him drop the captain off at the wrong time? That doesn't make sense, because all of the people are still frozen in the positions they were left in. If nothing's changed on the battlefield itself, why did the people start celebrating early? There was no indication that the sun had moved, and any clocks should have been frozen with everything else. (Not that it was even a planned event) Imagine it like this: Someone's sitting in a chair in their living room. In an hour, they'll decide they want some tea and get up to make it. A time traveler comes along and freezes the entire town in time, and moves everything inside the town forward in the time stream 55 minutes compared to everything outside of town. Does that mean that the person is going to get up in just 5 minutes? No! Because everything has been moved forward, and whatever chain of thought or events lead to them getting up to get the tea was frozen as well, and will still take an hour to occupy the person's mind. Or an even simpler example: Someone drops a brick off a building. This person represents the beginning of the chain of events that will lead to the outcome (The brick smashing). Halfway down the building a time traveler appears, freezes time, and moves the whole building ahead an hour from the perspective of outsiders. Will that affect how long it takes for the brick to complete the rest of it's journey and hit the ground? I also thought he might have just moved everything forward a little bit. But that doesn't make sense either. If you move everything in the universe forward by an hour, you still haven't done anything. The universe will notice no change. The only way I can see this working is if it was something from outside the battlefield that caused them to begin the truce, but even that doesn't make sense. Time hasn't just frozen on the battlefield, it's frozen at the north pole as well. This doesn't seem to be a universal thing, but there's still good reason to believe this covers the entire planet. The Doctor could have said he "jibblejammed the flibbleflams" and it would make just as much sense. Even if you do accept that the doctor was somehow able to make the event occur earlier and save the captain, despite how little sense that makes, it raises more problems. Since when did the Doctor have the godlike power to make events happen just a little earlier or later? That would have been a useful thing to use in all those other scenarios when you didn't have enough time to do something. Or just "adjust the timeframe" so that the evacuation of the hypothetical space station is completed before it's smashed into by a hypothetical meteor. You want to know what I think would be a better way to do it? Have the Doctor come out with his guitar and start playing a christmas song or something. Have HIM kickstart the events. You could even say that the perception filter stopped the soldiers from actively acknowledging the song, but that it lodged itself in their subconscious and lead to them doing what they were going to do (starting the truce) early. They even brought the guitar up earlier, with the First Doctor being all "most unorthodox!" about it. They could have used this as an opportunity to teach the First Doctor about how not all "unorthodox" things are necessarily bad. And that's just ONE of the problems I have with this episode. It's not a plot hole. It's a plot hole so big it has consumed the planet and can no longer be classified as a hole.

Really, it's treatment of the First Doctor and by extent William Hartnell is horrid. Just plain horrible and a misuse of David Bradley's talents as he's made to play a ooc of the original doctor. The biggest problem is that the story is nonexistent and nothing worthwhile happen. They should have cut out the glass woman plot and make it more about the 12th Doctor finding his peace with the 1st Doctor helping him on that as a reminder of the simpler times where the universe wasn't a total hostile place to be in and he just went to random places by the TARDIS's accord. Also that 709 episode ago caption is cringe worthy. They could have just simply write as "A long time ago" and leave it at that, would be more fitting for the narrative.

The episode was sweet in its own rights but One's sexist remarks and the face he made when Bill said she was gay, just really put me off. In-universe it makes no sense (the Doctor isn't REALLY from London 1963 obviously), and out-of-universe it still doesn't hold water because it simply wasn't written like that. One was not some overt sexist who told his female companions to hush and go back to making sandwiches or some shit all the time. One line said to his granddaughter in a heavily-maturity-themed serial is not the same thing as talking down to a woman he's only just met. And trying to shoehorn in homophobia is just idiotic. Aside from the fact that clearly no EU research was done to know that One had a gay audio companion (and this matters, because Moffat is the one who wrote the Night of the Doctor mini episode, which mentions Eight's audio companions, obviously trying to bridge the gap between audio and television), why would Gallifreyans of all people give a single shit about sexuality? When half the race has achieved Time Lord/Lady status and can change sex when they die? And knowing that most likely One won't be brought back for future multi Doctor episodes, this might be all that new fans ever see of his Doctor and then decide not to bother watching any of Hartnell's serials? Heart breaking to me. I did like Twice Upon a Time. I saw it in theaters, and I thought it was touching. It really had heart felt moments. Just that how One was written upset me in some ways. Also that Ben's actor was taller than Polly's by so much! LOL

I think the thing I personally found galling about the Anniversary episode- which is just fucking terrible- as well as the Christmas one, is Moffat's duplicity in claiming openly that he loves Doctor Who so much, and has done nothing but respect it- whilst making an effort to write the 10th and 1st Doctors in a way that feel sniping, and insulting. 10 is the same kind of egotist that 11 is, insulting people to their faces and goofing off, and 1 has that Le Funny Old Timey sexism even though it doesn't make sense for the character. Sure, he was written in the 60s, but even then, he was written progressively for the time period. Moffat allows his views and opinions on characters and certain issues to bleed into their presentation, as well as his narratives. I used to love his writing, and Silence In Library as well as the WW2 episode are cherished for me. However, I can actually look at the fact he had very strong oversight, much less money, and not the same level of indlugence as he gets in his series. Some writers /need/ constraints- and I hate to rehash an hbomberguy point here- the Sherlock pilot is a perfect example. Along with his earlier episodes in the Russel T run, it is evidence that his stories are tighter, and more memorable, and mesh well with his chosen settings when he's given shorter episodes, or is bound by time constraints. Those episodes stuck in my mind because they were different, yes, but I still knew the characters. 9 and Rose were still 9 and Rose; Martha and 10 were still Martha and 10. As showrunner, he took 6 month breaks, had an incredibly insular production staff, and took all the money the BBC threw at him. It's a crying shame, really.
