This video was really challenging to make for me. As I was testing these alcoholic beverages, I was constantly asking myself if I'm doing the right thing... Although I drunk a lot of alcohol when I was younger, a couple years ago I almost practically eliminated alcohol from my life. I felt during this experiment I went back to drinking more than my body can handle in the long term. So I'm really looking forward to getting back to normal which in my case is drinking less and only on very special occasions (if at all). Tom, Top note again! Red & White wine is my call everytime & biodynamic if possible. It does keep me sane at the end of a full day & I make sure it does not become a prop!! I just cannot deal with beer at all ,far too much carbs!!

I haven’t had alcohol in eight / ten years. I just stopped one day, after my son was born in 1982 I stopped completely for about five years then I would have a glass or two of wine and a beer with tacos or pizza. Then I found out I was serious diabetic, my blood sugar rollercoasters real lows (45) then up to 400, my body feels comfortable around 200/250 I wear the sensor and watch what I eat, I have lost 35 pounds, but the rollercoaster still runs, I wake up to 400’s or dropping to 40’s 50’s or what ever I was in the hospital lately and they call codes on me about six times, I coded myself at home at least four times in a month!

I too am from Czech heritage with slight pre-diabetes, a bit older than he is, and always looking for some drinking habits that won't escalate my chances of developing Type 2. This is a great video! Last May I did the blood tests and I had 12.7% and glycemia at 350 diagnosis: type 2 diabetes. under medical prescription, I took Metformin for breakfast and dinner and rapid insulin breakfast, lunch and dinner. I first eliminated any food containing sugar, and carbohydrates. A low carb diet. I mainly eat fish, eggs meat and vegetables and a couple of times a week only for lunch pasta (being Italian I love pasta). in September I did the blood tests again and I had 5.5% and 100 of fasting glycemia. Now I only take Metformin continuing with this type of diet and doing physical activity! Come on guys! good luck! Very interesting video! greetings from Italy

I was diagnosed in Mar-93 as a Type 1 diabetic. Recently starting to feel a loss on sensation in my feet which my Endo says could be diabetes related or could be related to my love of beer! When I was first diagnosed, I knew something was wrong with my body as I had lost 20kg in 6 weeks and was peeing more than a horse! This happened while I was in the Mlitary so I wasn't too worried about losing the weight, even though I felt like shit and was peeing all the time? After an unfortunate family event that lead to me being charged with assault I went and saw a Doctor and I don't think I'd even sat down yet and he said I think your Diabetic (the Keto Acidosis, Acetone, smell gave it away). I remember being "educated" about diabetes in the hospital, which had to follow the "Medical" guidelines which I must say didn't agree with how I wanted to lead my life. "NOT MEDICAL ADVICE!" Like Tom, I experimented on myself to get familiar with my new condition and how I had to deal with it. I recall one weekend afternoon making a decision to see just how low can I go? I was reading Tom Clancy "Red Storm Rising " at the time and I decided to check my blood sugars often as I continued to read as I knew my BSL was going low. I got to 1.3 mmol and had the dis-orientating situation that Tom talks about as I could no longer focus on what I was reading! Literally went and ate a tablespoon of sugar to see what would happen and realised that my life was an ongoing science experiment, like the rest of us in this world who have to balance what we put into our bodies versus the outcomes? Like Tom, I mostly get it kind of Ok, but he is next level on getting it right. I brew (and consumme) my own low carb beer (in ridiculous quanties) and have been doing so for over twenty years but I love the passion, enthusiasm and education that Tom brings to the world of Diabetes!

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes about three years ago. I was drinking a lot of beer up til then, but after meeting with a nutritionist, I learned more about the importance of carbs. I have to be honest, I still drank a LOT of alcohol. But I switched to vodka soda (no sugar). I also paid attention to my food diet, but I still drank like a fish! Turns out, despite my bad habit of drinking, I got my A1c down to about 5!

I really appreciate your story. My doctor doesn't understand diabetes. So, since she hasn't prescribed the meds that I need, I have been using information you and others have given and using scotch to bring my A1C down. I realize this is not a good long-term solution, but it gave me a bridge to adopt a Keto diet. I have lost another 20 lbs for a total of 30% of my max body weight. More importantly, I eat very little carbs. Eggs, bacon, steak, and chicken. A little vegetable now and then, but absolutely no refined sugars or processed foods. I ride my bike at least 10 hours a week for the last 40 years, usually more. Lift weights 5 times a week; an hour at least each session. I work out the whole time. No lift weight and rest 5 mins. Many of your colleagues have pointed out that one can't exercise their way out of diabetes. I'm living proof. Until I changed my diet, I did not see any improvement in my condition. I'm a type 2, so I really think I am on the road to recovery by going, 90%, carb free. I still enjoy a margarita on the weekend, but with sugar free margarita mix. I've also reduced my diabetes meds, and my daily checks of glucose are not perfect but

Howdy Tom!👋🤓 Your title did get my attention! 😁 When I was in my twenties and early thirties, I drank mostly rum and Cokes and wine coolers ( mostly when I went clubbing). Then diabetes hit me like a ton of bricks....I was 32 at the time. I remained in denial for a few years after, and screwed up my body even more...😮. I'm now sixty years old and finally decided to change my diet to the Nutritarian way of eating. I've struggled with this disease for most of my life due to eating the worst diet....the American fast food and highly processed foods...🙁 I'm now on the slow road to reduce the pharmacy of drugs I'm on, nearly lost my eyesight ( was saved from that, due to my Retinologists' intervention), and having to retrain my taste buds to love natural foods. I truly hope no one has to go through my experience...I've lost out on so much in my life. It's like starting all over again....enjoyed your content! "Cheers" 🍸🍷🍹☕🍵 😂🤗

If you're type 1 and want to drink the best choice, I've found, is light beer. For me the amount of carbs typically balanced the shutting off the glucose production of your liver as it works to take care of the liquor. I used to drink quite heavily in college and when i kept it to light beer my bloodsugars held just about steady and didn't drop too much during the night either. Might have helped that those were not sitting parties either, but dancing, walking around the area, etc. Mixed drinks with non-sugar soda (rum and diet, vodka and diet etc) could be tricky as my bloodsugar would drop too much later on. But I'm with you on that looking back...not sure if I would drink quite as much as I did. Andrew Huberman's podcast on alcohol changed my life. I never knew how much alcohol messes up your body, and just as importantly, your BRAIN. I am an academic, and I can't help but wonder how much better I would be, how much stronger my memory would be, if I'd drank less (I did not really ever get blackout drunk, but did have a night or two a week that were really fun). It also just DECIMATES your gut and now I am spending a lot of time trying to fix those issues. Our culture pushes alcohol so hard - every fun activity, even sports, is linked with drinking. I used to play ultimate frisbee, so even moreso there actually. But it is a LIE. You can totally have fun with out alcohol, and its unnecessary in most cases. When I first started cutting back this year I felt a little sad and like I would never enjoy things the way I did previously with a drink in hand, and people would not want to hang out with me anymore if we weren't drinking together. But over a few months of cutting back from 5-6 drinks a week to 2, to 1, to only on occasion, I've found I'm missing it less and less. I don't think there is anything wrong with people who choose the path to have a drink more than I do, but I just don't feel like I'm missing out any more and its stopped being at all difficult to sip on a water or something else with them instead of having a drink in hand. No one cares, neither do I, and my social life is proceeding as it was previously, but now I am healthier (and don't lose any time to hangovers either!). I am also encouraged by the increase in numbers of mocktails being served at many restaurants, so you can have a treat without the literal poison (albeit low-grade) in it. The prevalence of those also suggests that many others are choosing this path as well. So if you're thinking about it, I say go for it - give it a few months, allow yourself an occasional drink on special occasions, but overall pull back and just see how you feel - it will probably surprise you as it did me :)

Denial, defiance, and depression are all powerful things, and I think we all go through them at one time or another when we live with diabetes. I've lived with the disease for almost 50 years, and can say that my behavior in college verged on suicidal...drinking and doing drugs were dangerous behaviors, and I'm lucky to have survived without complications. Like you, learning the effects of drinking took me time and testing, which was much easier since CGMs became available (they were not when I was in college).

With a strict diet, lot of walk-run programme, my weight 110 kg to 78kg and my A1C amount dropped from 13% to 5.7% in 10 months. Now I'm very fine with it. I had my suspicions about using alcohol. Did I use it? Hell yea! actually, I just want you to to test Turkish Raki. (It has its own culture) 1) It has anice inside, no sugar and smell may not good for some people but, 2) you mostly dilute with water (normally 45 degrees with alcohol) and ice 3) As customs in my country, you should drink it with meal (specially dinner), fish & seafood is the best. 4) As eating and drinking goes together you can fiil soon. Best 3 glasses. 5) The most important thing is it has low carbs, no sugary cocktails known (may be new in some fancy bars). Just water, ice and a good meal. Have fun 6) By the way, don't drink alone! Best with friends, whatever they drink.

Great video. When I developed type 1 the first doctor asked what do I drink on weekends and I said vodka/coke. He said you'd have to give that up. I was devastated then he continued, you need to switch to vodka/diet coke. Most times my blood sugar stays flat on a night out with that combo but sometimes it rockets. No rhyme nor reason why it reacts off the charts once in a while. It mostly stays flat with spirits. This video is great. Keep them coming. Thanks!

I appreciate how you shared your personal experiences and emphasized the importance of moderation and understanding how different types of alcohol impact blood sugar levels. It's fascinating to see the experiments with different drinks and how carbs, not alcohol itself, tend to cause spikes. Your stories, especially the ones about the dangers of severe lows, are eye-opening. Thank you for sharing these practical tips - it’s really empowering for diabetics to make safer choices!

Great video! And finally someone understands what plain alcohol actually does regarding diabetes. A deeper explanation is that alcohol depletes a cofactor required by a pair of enzymes alcohol/acetylaldehyde dehydrogenase, which converts alcohol to acetic acid in two steps: ethanol -> acetylaldehyde -> acetic acid/acetyl-CoA. With light alcohol consumption you'll likely just end up slightly lower than usual going into the early hours of the morning. With heavier consumption, especially for regular drinkers who have effectively trained their liver to be better at metabolizing ethanol, you might actually notice an initial increase in your blood sugar or have a really hard time treating hyperglycemia. Cause the weird part, is that alcohol and its metabolite acetyl-CoA are molecules that can enter mitochondria and be shunted straight into the little engines running inside the powerhouse of the cell. It's such an efficient way to deliver chemical energy that your body will attempt to use it before glucose in muscles and your liver. In this state you'll see your sugar start going up for seemingly no reason. And if you're in a state where nothing needs the extra energy, all that acetyl-CoA is also the molecule needed for the first step of making fat ... which is why alcohol is super-unfriendly when trying to lose weight.

I got told in 1984 when I was diagnosed that alcohol has a lowering effect on blood sugar cus it stops the carbs being absorbed so less glucose going in to the blood stream. They even said if you have say 2 pints of lager then eat a bag of crisps. But I found this happens the morning after, or as you put a few hours later. I cud reduce the insulin used by 50% the next morning. Back then there was no cgm so it was often a bit precarious. With the libre 2 I have now its not a problem.

Same with traditional cider that is wild fermented also zero g of carbs. Drinking any alchol in heavy amounts will crash your blood sugar. Always in moderation and always with food.
