Yeah, exactly. In the Summer of 2003, when the draft was, the Pistons did not yet have Rasheed Wallace. As you pointed out, they traded for him midway through the 2003-2004 season, so they definitely weren't thinking of his successor, considering he wasn't even on the team at that point

Hey JC, you mentioned that Darko was a farmer now. There's actually an ESPN article about Darko and his farm. His farm is huge and has thousands of Acres. It makes him millions of dollars. So even though he wasn't a success in the NBA he was a huge success in life and is rich even today just off his farm...

Darko's growth was def stunted by Larry Brown and his hatred for young players tbh. Darko I think could've been very serviceable had he been traded to a bad team, his game was a prototype Jokic with more athleticism and defensive abilities

@@mentok3027 You're correct. Atlanta were willing to trade Sheed before they lose him for nothing. Their only demand were expirings and one First round pick. Detroit had one player that had an extra year (I think it was Chucky Atkins) so they had to find a third team to get Sheed. That's why Boston got involved. wonderful analysis on the pistons should not have drafted carmelo instead. in retrospect, bosh would have been the better selection, as u said. i think milicic could have at least had a career comparable to kwame brown (maybe a 9 or 10 yr career). he was drafted too early but i think he was out of the league too soon. he could have been a journeyman backing up starting power forwards and centers. i've seen it too many times. not sure if there was some blackballing goin on or not

Okay, I agree that Darko was a mistake, but drafting him lead to the pistons winning the title. You actually made a mistake in your commentary. I am a longtime pistons fan and sheed was not on the team when he was drafted. Sheed came much later in that season during the February trade deadline. The reason for trading for Sheed is because the Pistons were struggling with the starting frontcourt of big ben and elden campbell. They needed the added scoring and traded for sheed which opened up the floor for everyone else. Darko was drafted in June of '03, Sheed was acquired in Feb of '04.

I see the Melo situation differently. Detroit was a veteran franchise that would have shaped Melo as a opposed to having him JUST get buckets. Melo had shown at Syracuse that he could be a willing passer, but I think playing with a championship ready team would have brought more of that team oriented play out of him. When he got to the Nuggets he did exactly what they needed him to do, which was score, and I think that's what put him in the head space of "score and score often" mindset.

I'd say those 3 played right in the midst of their prime. Even Dwade. His body was never going to last, but Bosh and Lebron were primed. That's still one of the most unfortunate things to happen to my basketball fandom. I hated seeing them join up like that. It ruined the entire East, there were no more classic duels between Wade and Bron(in their prime) and made Bosh's superstar potential vanish. He was the first AD! Then every other superstar followed suit and you have what you see today. Couldn't rock with either of em ever since. Had the Pistons taken Bosh, they would've won 3 straight.

How would Melo hinder Billups? They ended up playing together in Denver and went all the way to the Conference Finals.

Detroit should have absolutely drafted Carmelo. Their defense was top tier but they could have used more offense. Chauncey Billups had to work to hard being the point guard and the go to guy when the bucket was needed. Carmelo could have spelled him at both. 3-4 chips easy that team with Melo

Bosh would've been the perfect fit but with Bosh there then the Pistons don't trade for Rasheed Wallace since he was traded for during the 2003-2004 season. Also, I think Detroit should've tried to trade Milicic to a young team for some pieces to fill the roster. Detroit didn't need that high of a pick even though they received it in the Otis Thorpe Trade from back in 1997.

Though def not an ultimate bust because of his mid too latter career, but the fact that he was drafted before MJ (not that anyone could be blamed for taking him at the time) your take on a story on bowie would be interesting...maybe more of a what if

I dont agree about melo in detroit, larry brown wasn't known for giving rookie players entitlement mins he would have made Melo earn every min of playing time, i can totally see Melo playing 15-20 mins off the bench for Detroit in 04'.

If I was the Pistons I might have taken him over Melo also. Either that or I would have prepared to part ways with coach Larry Brown becuz there is just no way those two would have gotten along.

It's weird because yeah he's a bust but he had a ring before anyone in his draft class but didn't do much of anything but he got one before Bron and Melo still don't have one 🤦🏾‍♂️ what a conundrum

The Pistons team was built to "Win Now." Also they had no role on that team for him. Okur and Mcdyess were the offense and Wallace was the D at the 5 spot. He was pure 5 too, so you couldn't really have him play the 4.

Actually, Darko had 3p range coming to the NBA but Larry Brown totally misjudged his potential. And the PF position wasn't the same back than as it is today. So he could have easily been a good PF.

Cavs still lose James to Miami. Detroit still won that year(2004). 2010 Cavs still have 1 ring just like the 2000 Pistons. Bad draft choice tho. Detroit should've rolled with Bosh that year!

I'm Serbian, and this clip is quite wrong about Darko, because I know his story. His biggest stunt was himself, he had limitless potential, he could have been great shot blocker, good passer, he could have been good shooter. The moment he came into the league, they immediately wanted him to change his game, just to play with his back to the basket, but just that wasn't his game. Then his playing time was too small. Even when they played him, there were no plays called for him. So he went partying, drinking, not trying at all to improve. He was just impatient

It’s easy criticize when you’ve never gotten close to playing in the NBA. NBA teams can be brutal to players. They should get more blame for ruining a lot players career
