Christian truth has been so watered down by preachers & teachers to the extent that it is flat, bland, & unappealing. A disservice & travesty! But those who truly represent/serve God humbly will find that His Spirit often critiques events, devts, & people just as Jesus did - it seems nothing escapes him. I doubt the Bible was ever meant to show God’s existence. At the time and place where it was written, the existence of God or gods was probably accepted as a given and the question was which religion should I follow. So it seems to me that the Scriptures aren’t meant to convert atheists, we already have great philosophical traditions for that, but rather they exist to tell us the story of how God worked to save humanity through Christ and Him crucified. It seems to me that this is the fundamental purpose of the scriptures and in that regard they seem to have succeeded.

Why wait 98,000 years to plant Jesus on the earth ( we left Africa approximately 100,000 years ago) - seems far fetched. The credibility of the bible is eroded by broad interpretation. Just as Christians believe theirs is the only true god, each denomination believes they alone have the correct interpretation. It’s so obviously a solely man made story, passed by mouth by ignorant people who needed a comforting reason for their existence in a fearful, violent, confusing world. There must be a certain kind of cognition which can accept the hiddenness, the contradiction, the tales that science has disproven e.g. the flood, the arc, the age of the earth,the parting of the sea, etc. ‘God works in mysterious ways’ ....’Free will’....are used too often to answer the difficult questions, and can only take you so far.

Wishy washy principals started when the church got too involved in worldly matters instead of addressing the souls of the people, their spiritual state and their existential journey. For example gay marriage should never have been established in the church - not because it would be sinful to be gay or because you couldn't be Christian if you are gay. It is just that Christian marriage means starting a family and only a man-woman couple can have children (adoptions aside, that's a civil society matter). We all meet things in life we are excluded from; it is normal and we should face that. Christian marriage is a life form not meant for everybody. Civil marriage for gay people (and many straight people too) is fine and not having a church wedding doesn't mean that you are inferior or that you can't be Christian. The church should be harder on people wanting a church wedding, because so many of them just want a ceremony. They should be reminded what marriage means for the soul and for the Christian community. Well, these things are just the tip of the ice berg of wordly wishy washiness.

People are seeking Truth. The ultimate Truth. That Love is not just giving but demanding. God demands everything from us because he gave us all that we are. What we get in return is the ability to live a life steeped in both hope and reality, a sense of purpose and order instead of despair and chaos. The representatives of our modern Catholic Church are not doing a very good job of demonstrating the Truth that has been entrusted to them and so people are walking away. The more clearly the Faith is understood, not just the wherefore but the why; the more simply and plainly it is understood that love doesn’t mean we turn a blind eye to weakness but that in love we strive to help each other overcome them; then people come to the Church.
@Steven_Rowe3 жыл бұрын
Just a few comments, my thoughts and nothing more . As a baby boomer from the early 50s it seems that perhaps the decline in the church is due to many factors. Perhaps people's faith has been shaken by the fact the war happened and where was God as if God had a duty to intervene. Perhaps our perception of God is wrong. After the war things improved, people had more money, rationing ended etc, we had TV things to buy and pubs, why would anyone want to go to listen to some boring old vicar . As time went on the next generation ie mine have our kids more and then my kids have continued this trend with my grand kids. The swinging 60s produced liberation of every kind, the permissive society and now a society where justice seems unfair, where criminals seem to appear as victims in court. Perhaps there is now a spiritual void in people's lives an emptiness that that materialism and modernity have no answer to and athiesm offers no hope or answers to. People converting to Islam also is a result of this void, lack of meaning, purpose and feeling responsible to a higher creative power. Many years ago the Arch bishop of York who was African said that the fabric of British society was underpinned by its faith and it was in danger of becoming extinct,perhaps he was right????? As I said, these are just a few thoughts and nothing more.
@late86413 жыл бұрын
Humans are pattern-seeking primates which has caused a deeply rooted illusion of and desire for meaning. When there's no evident external purpose, men have invented divine agencies to grant themselves the mirage of meaning. Most atheists, myself included, live thoroughly worthwhile lives even without the belief in divine purpose. Humans are conscious life forms and we have the capability to give our own meanings to our lives. We don't have to delude ourselves in order to live happily. Religion is for the weak-minded.

NT Wright really just ruined Douglas Murray's point. Over the years I've lost respect for NT Wright. He indulges in too much virtue signalling and being a social justice Warrior these days. He talks about getting on all fours with the poor people of the world and yet he lives personally so far away from that ideal himself in his day-to-day life. He has lived all of his life as a scholar.
@truthmatters75733 жыл бұрын
There's room for scholars and laymen in the body of Christ. Scholars are engaging directly with other academics "on all fours". I think Wright isn't detracting but is providing some much needed balance. Christianity is not an outward form. Going directly to the source does not mean becoming a Catholic or steeping yourself in ritual. Going to the source means taking the Word of God and making it practical in your daily life. That looks rather mundane, but not worldly.

@@truthmatters7573 preach on. You're missing the context here. You can clearly see that Douglas Murray was not happy about that here. It was just a rude thing to do on NT Wright's part. Also besides that it was kind of preachy on his part, while Douglas Murray was being unassuming. P.s. your response to my comment here was doctrinaire and a little preachy. I can see why you have come to his rescue here. Getting on all fours with other academics? Come on man.
@truthmatters75733 жыл бұрын
@@grosbeak6130 I like your response, just I thought that calling NT Wright a hypocrite simply because he's a scholar talking about meeting people where they're at is a cheap shot. He may not be meeting the laity where they're at, but he's meeting academics where they're at, which is often overlooked but no less important. Academics generally aren't gonna take a random Christian blogger seriously, but are gonna want to look at academic resources or talk to people with an academic way of thinking. They generally want to apply the level of scrutiny they've been taught to apply in their field of study to these all important questions (insofar as they are open to the discussion that is). Then again, Murray could have made the point he was making without contrasting it with non-ritualistic, non-catholic Christianity and then Wright wouldn't have felt the need to defend that expression of Christianity which Murray was kind of putting down.

if you want to drink directly from the well, go to Jesus, not religion. read the new testament. the living word, living water, comes from Jesus. gospel of John. run from the catholic church, don't look back.

👍 55th Isaiah 1“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you without money, come, buy, and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost! 2Why spend money on that which is not bread, and your labor on that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of foods.…

@user-tf2wd1eh3g3 жыл бұрын
Oh, but it is. Might not be your brand, but like all the gazillion versions of christianity, they too believe christ is the son of god, who died for sins and was resurrected.

@@user-tf2wd1eh3g Jesus said many will come in my name and deceive many. The Pope is called Holy Father, his encyclicals are written with Us/Our the same way God speaks in Genesis 1 ‘Let’s make man in Our’, the Pope sits on a white throne surrounded by angels and elders. He has placed himself as God on earth also his title is pontifex maximus which means bridge builder between heaven and earth. Anti christ means ‘in the place of Christ’ Do you think that is what the Popes have done through history ? I haven’t even listed all the doctrines that are not to be found in the Bible.

@@user-tf2wd1eh3g I never mentioned Catholics ? I said Catholicism as a religion isn’t Christian. ‘Not everyone that says unto me Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven. But he who does the will of my Father’ Yes many Catholics are Christians, they worship God with the light they have but as Jesus says ‘the sheep will hear my voice and there will be one flock’ also somewhere else says ‘come out of her [Babylon] my people’

I hope not pagan Catholocism! The Gospel of the bible is NOT the modern Day Catholicism. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is what I believe to be the true Gospel that Saves. Saved BY FAITH ALONE, not through works, so that no man may boast. Catholicism is a sprinkle of truth on a foundation of lies, in current day. I share this in All love. Through Jesus Christ. We live with the Holy Spirit and the bible says nothing of Priests hierarchy being the way. Christ paid the fine on the cross (Read Romans 6:23 as to WHY). Through grace we are saved, by Faith alone in Christ.

That is such an important point and one that Justin Welsby needs to hear , why water down Christianity it is such a powerful message in itself and offers hope ….I have just read Pilgrims Progress , please read it if you haven’t already ………it is Hopeful who and not Christian that demonstrates the true faith and crosses the deep river at the end while Christian starts to drown ……interesting ……..I just hope and pray that Jordan Peterson declares himself publicly he is a Christian , there would be a gathering worldwide of millions …….he does more for faith than any Archbishop.
