I have loved and followed Jesus Christ since I first heard about Him when 11 years old and now at 72 I still do and believe it was never about all the churches I have been in or sermons I heard (and sometimes gave!) or spiritual programs I followed or read about but simply listening and praying and studying the word of God with my community and sometimes non believers and sharing prayers and their answers and daily spending time in those things together that has brought the deepest peace and satisfaction in this deeply troubled world...just talk to Him and listen and follow His wisdom....He leads us

Christian truth has been so watered down by preachers & teachers to the extent that it is flat, bland, & unappealing. A disservice & travesty! But those who truly represent/serve God humbly will find that His Spirit often critiques events, devts, & people just as Jesus did - it seems nothing escapes him. That's why people seeking truth were/are still drawn to him - whenever & wherever His truth is proclaimed & unadulterated by the messengers whom He called out.

@@stevenwiederholt7000 Jesus' critique of the Pharisees has something for us today too. They were the religious leaders & missionaries but they win converts to their own interpretations, ie, according to man. Form over substance & the spiritual is lost in the legalism. Jesus taught that a 'good' teacher has a wealth of resources to bring out to his hearers. Legalism is a death knell to life & viability & vibrant faith. It does not energize nor does it inspire. Whereas Jesus' teaching is wise and kindles hope & faith in God

@@stevenwiederholt7000 to answer your question: God's truth is rich & profitable (or powerful) "to reproof, correct, discipline, teach, & train us in the way that we should go". It is not a choice to either let God's truth out & shape it to fit our own understanding, motive, or to make it palatable. So Pentecostal or Lutheran Church may be at opposite ends of denominational spectrum - it does not have to come down to issue of being lively or sombre/dull. Yes, often worship comes down to style, format, rituals, & preferences. God can still speak to us if the substance of his word carries the day

I will try to remember to pray for Douglas in my Rosary tonight. I was living like an atheist when I converted to Catholicism (and attending the Latin Mass, traditional sacraments, traditional catechesis, and all the rest) in 2018. My conversion had several elements, but a major thread was that I realized the goodness of Christian teaching (especially the unpopular bits no one else holds to) and finally realized that maybe they were right about Jesus, too.

What you mean by traditional? Jesus didn’t speak in Latin to masses. Jesus spoke to ppl who were the lowest in society in their own language and not in Latin (which they wouldn’t understand). Where in the Bible is rosemary? Where in the Bible is mentioned about Catholic Church? If anything Catholic Church goes against everything in the Bible and directly against God. Remember about not making idols? Remember about not praying to anyone but God. You don’t pray to a dead human which Mary was. Also In bible in quite a few places (three just what I can remember) is saying that Jesus had brothers and a sister too. If you want to talk about the original church there were Jews.

Father God gives those who seek Him, faith to trust in Jesus as the Son of God. But Jesus calls sinners to repentance, those who think they are okay , "good people" may never earnestly seek Him. Here in Belfast, N. Ireland, a tridentine religious organisation know as" The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest " bought an old former Presbyterian Church. As a result of changing demographics, the protestant congregation moved to another location. As a practicing Catholic my first thoughts were on the sceptical side as to this ancient tradition surviving in the modern era. Well I'm pleasantly surprised to say the least! All Masses during the week are very well attended and once again surprisingly... All age groups are represented. The services are all in Latin with the priests and altar services in pre Vatican 2 garb. The success of this venture really has me at a loss. This ancient form of worship has struck a chord with all of the participants.. I'm going with the flow in wonder.

The problem is not that particular form of the Roman Rite, the Extraordinary Form, but how it is abused and misused by those attached to it, in order to disparage the Ordinary Form, to attack the Second Vatican Council, the Popes and the Magisterium since 1962; with a special kind of hatred reserved for Pope Francis. It is virtually impossible to have the Extraordinary Form without this neo-protestant baggage. I doubt the Bible was ever meant to show God’s existence. At the time and place where it was written, the existence of God or gods was probably accepted as a given and the question was which religion should I follow. So it seems to me that the Scriptures aren’t meant to convert atheists, we already have great philosophical traditions for that, but rather they exist to tell us the story of how God worked to save humanity through Christ and Him crucified. It seems to me that this is the fundamental purpose of the scriptures and in that regard they seem to have succeeded.

@@jimdandy9118 Exactly my point. Not capable of understanding? then why communicate at all? Why so disjointed? Open to countless interpretations? Why not have his entire creation believing in and worshipping him? 7,000,000,000 instead of 2,000,000,000. Why wait 98,000 years to plant Jesus on the earth ( we left Africa approximately 100,000 years ago) - seems far fetched. The credibility of the bible is eroded by broad interpretation. Just as Christians believe theirs is the only true god, each denomination believes they alone have the correct interpretation. It’s so obviously a solely man made story, passed by mouth by ignorant people who needed a comforting reason for their existence in a fearful, violent, confusing world. There must be a certain kind of cognition which can accept the hiddenness, the contradiction, the tales that science has disproven e.g. the flood, the arc, the age of the earth, the parting of the sea, etc. ‘God works in mysterious ways’ ....’Free will’....are used too often to answer the difficult questions, and can only take you so far.

Obviously I have some disagreements in doctrine, but if we're all coming to the conclusion that the First Cause want to relate with us and he's laid it all out for us to follow, then we're aiming at the same star and we'll come together eventually. :)

At some point I realised that I believed - it was shocking. I was in tears for weeks as I realised that I had lived my life all wrong. The scriptures suddenly came alive and it was NOT an intellectual thing - it was as the gospels say, God changes your heart from stone to flesh. Pitting intellect or science against God is a very human error. It took me quite a long time to find a church denomination that actually had not become watered down and so virtually non-Christian! It is not all about saying prayers, attending services and reading the Bible. Those who turn to trad catholicism know that, they are in quest of the Grace of God, the supernatural. The action of God on ourselves. Religion is not about us, it is about the Grace of God on us. Protestants usually do away with that. Wishy washy principals started when the church got too involved in worldly matters instead of addressing the souls of the people, their spiritual state and their existential journey. For example gay marriage should never have been established in the church - not because it would be sinful to be gay or because you couldn't be Christian if you are gay. It is just that Christian marriage means starting a family and only a man-woman couple can have children (adoptions aside, that's a civil society matter). We all meet things in life we are excluded from; it is normal and we should face that. Christian marriage is a life form not meant for everybody. Civil marriage for gay people (and many straight people too) is fine and not having a church wedding doesn't mean that you are inferior or that you can't be Christian. The church should be harder on people wanting a church wedding, because so many of them just want a ceremony. They should be reminded what marriage means for the soul and for the Christian community. Well, these things are just the tip of the ice berg of wordly wishy washiness.

People are seeking Truth. The ultimate Truth. That Love is not just giving but demanding. God demands everything from us because he gave us all that we are. What we get in return is the ability to live a life steeped in both hope and reality, a sense of purpose and order instead of despair and chaos. The representatives of our modern Catholic Church are not doing a very good job of demonstrating the Truth that has been entrusted to them and so people are walking away. The more clearly the Faith is understood, not just the wherefore but the why; the more simply and plainly it is understood that love doesn’t mean we turn a blind eye to weakness but that in love we strive to help each other overcome them; then people come to the Church.

Just a few comments, my thoughts and nothing more . As a baby boomer from the early 50s it seems that perhaps the decline in the church is due to many factors. Perhaps people's faith has been shaken by the fact the war happened and where was God as if God had a duty to intervene. Perhaps our perception of God is wrong. After the war things improved, people had more money, rationing ended etc, we had TV things to buy and pubs, why would anyone want to go to listen to some boring old vicar . As time went on the next generation ie mine have our kids more and then my kids have continued this trend with my grand kids. The swinging 60s produced liberation of every kind, the permissive society and now a society where justice seems unfair, where criminals seem to appear as victims in court. Perhaps there is now a spiritual void in people's lives an emptiness that that materialism and modernity have no answer to and athiesm offers no hope or answers to. People converting to Islam also is a result of this void, lack of meaning, purpose and feeling responsible to a higher creative power. Many years ago the Arch bishop of York who was African said that the fabric of British society was underpinned by its faith and it was in danger of becoming extinct, perhaps he was right????? As I said, these are just a few thoughts and nothing more.

Humans are pattern-seeking primates which has caused a deeply rooted illusion of and desire for meaning. When there's no evident external purpose, men have invented divine agencies to grant themselves the mirage of meaning. Most atheists, myself included, live thoroughly worthwhile lives even without the belief in divine purpose. Humans are conscious life forms and we have the capability to give our own meanings to our lives. We don't have to delude ourselves in order to live happily. Religion is for the weak-minded.

NT Wright really just ruined Douglas Murray's point. Over the years I've lost respect for NT Wright. He indulges in too much virtue signalling and being a social justice Warrior these days. He has lived all of his life as a scholar.

There's room for scholars and laymen in the body of Christ. Scholars are engaging directly with other academics "on all fours". I think Wright isn't detracting but is providing some much needed balance. Christianity is not an outward form. Going directly to the source does not mean becoming a Catholic or steeping yourself in ritual. Going to the source means taking the Word of God and making it practical in your daily life. That looks rather mundane, but not worldly.

You can clearly see that Douglas Murray was not happy about that here. It was just a rude thing to do on NT Wright's part. Also besides that it was kind of preachy on his part, while Douglas Murray was being unassuming. P.s. your response to my comment here was doctrinaire and a little preachy. @@grosbeak6130 I like your response, just I thought that calling NT Wright a hypocrite simply because he's a scholar talking about meeting people where they're at is a cheap shot. He may not be meeting the laity where they're at, but he's meeting academics where they're at, which is often overlooked but no less important. Academics generally aren't gonna take a random Christian blogger seriously, but are gonna want to look at academic resources or talk to people with an academic way of thinking. They generally want to apply the level of scrutiny they've been taught to apply in their field of study to these all important questions (insofar as they are open to the discussion that is). Then again, Murray could have made the point he was making without contrasting it with non-ritualistic, non-catholic Christianity and then Wright wouldn't have felt the need to defend that expression of Christianity which Murray was kind of putting down.

It does not matter in the least, what brand of Christianity you convert to. The real issue is, do you believe that Jesus went to the cross, suffered and died to pay the penalty for the sin of mankind. Jesus is the well with living water to drink from. If you drink from him, you will never thirst again. All other wells will not give eternal life, no matter how pomp and grand they are. Jhn 3:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

Myths about personifications of natural processes that happen on an annual basis bear no resemblance to an actual historical person who actaully rose from the dead as a one-time historical fact. As for sacrifice, Jesus' death was the REAL sacrifice to which the Jesish sacrifices pointed as types. They were acted-out prophesies.

For someone to become a Catholic means they haven't understood the bible enough. The fact that they baptise babies state that their priests and bishops can't get married and their prevalent use of statues/idols. Jesus was baptised at 30. 1 Timothy 4:1-3 Some Will Depart from the Faith 4 Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 2 through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, 3 who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. Exodus 20:3-5:…3You shall have no other gods before Me. 4 You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in the heavens above, on the earth below, or in the waters beneath. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on their children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,… The original church is mapped out in the book of Acts.

I hope not pagan Catholocism! The Gospel of the bible is NOT the modern Day Catholicism. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is what I believe to be the true Gospel that Saves. Saved BY FAITH ALONE, not through works, so that no man may boast. Catholicism is a sprinkle of truth on a foundation of lies, in current day. I share this in All love. Through Jesus Christ. We live with the Holy Spirit and the bible says nothing of Priests hierarchy being the way. Christ paid the fine on the cross (Read Romans 6:23 as to WHY). Through grace we are saved, by Faith alone in Christ.
