You bring back a lot of memories. I had 1998 2500 quad cab long bed v10 when I started college and had over 300,000 miles when I gave it back to my grandfather. Miss driving it expect for the gas mileage.
@shawnedwards27005 жыл бұрын
Mine averaged 13.5 to 13.9 in town and 14.5 to 14.7 on the highway. I did have it tuned and did have a 3.55 r&p. The torque it made after that mixed with 315 tires served up surprisingly good mileage for a big block 2500. I've seen chevys and fords with smaller engines that barely got half my mpgs with half the torque. Never understood it.

I love the magnum V10s. I ran one for about 26,000 miles last year. Sadly, I retired it after that. Had to get a bigger truck. A 2001 ram 3500 6 speed manual cummins flatbed armed to the teeth with tool boxes replaced her. Both the V10s and the cummins are great engines. The biggest killer of the V10s are the mpgs. They really pull as good as a 12v cummins but when you put over 20k miles on a year those mpgs catch up. But for a fun truck, to hell with that. The V10 may not be the legend, fuel efficient, power capable, and all around as good as a diesel. But to hell with that. They are awesome engines. With plenty of ass and a great sound. Mine has dual 3inch super 44s and it just sounds phenomenal. I would LOVE to see a v10 with a hx40 turbo, water meth injection, and a 2nd gen cummins intercooler as it should bolt right in place. Run about 7 pounds of boost. If she fails. The commecting rods are the same rods as a 318, so get strong aftermarket 318 forged rods and a set of stroker 318 or 360 forged pistons. The only weak link is the crank... wonder if a 8.0 viper forged crank will fit with some machining... maybe. I am egar to see more vids about your v10. Maybe contact TFL truck about running as ole V10 up the ike gauntlet? That would be cool.

Also, consider getting a ported throttle body from the fastman. If memory serves, he does a throttle body for the v10 magnum. I'm pulling the heads off of my V10 to replap the valves and clean things up. Hopefully gonna sell her to a close friend after that. If I was keeping it I was considering having the heads sent to a machine shop to do a full rebuild and mill the heads to bump up the compression to around 9.0:1 from the factory 8.3:1. Help with torque mostly. But more importantly, have larger valves installed. Then get the cam refround, then rocker arms. Many possibilities. All it costs is money.
@shawnedwards27006 жыл бұрын
Steven Cash I never thought about getting the motor done up like that. For sure it's in my trucks future though. Anything that makes power. Eventually it'll boosted. Would be better to have all that done first that's for sure. I have a good tuner so atleast I won't have to worry about that. Ryan from FRP works some serious magic on these older dodge trucks like nobodies biz.
@stevencash16096 жыл бұрын
Shawn Edwards I got a tuner for my v10 too but I went with Hemi fever. It definitely did raise fuel economy by .4 - .6 mpgs on averge. I make collected about 30,000 miles of MPG data and I was able to get an average of 11.2 MPGs vs about 10.5 mpg with a truck set up just like yours but with a longbed and 136,000 miles. Also stock tires. There was also defnitetly more power, especially in the 93 octane tune. I was able to out run my baddy with a 1997 ram 1500 2wd with a 360 v8. One time he was coming up behind me and I just barely saw him, I was going about 40mpg and floored it then the rear tires broke loose and next thing I knew I was doing a 40mph sideways burn out in an intersection. At 21 years old the truck had some serious ass but I took it back down to the 87 octane tune to get the better mpgs as it was a work truck. It was honestly faster than my tuned up 2001 ram 3500 cummins 6 speed with an edge EZ tuner, massive cold air intake, air dog lift pump and banks exhaust making around 300 horsepower and about 650 torque at the wheels. Or so the tuner advertizes. Way quicker than my stock ram 2500 24v cummins. Hopefully the reassembly goes smoothly and lapping these old pitted valves ups my cylinder pressure. Gotta sell her after that though. Just no more parking room anymore and not much I can do with it with the money I have. Hopefully my buddy buys it off of me. In the future, I want to get a single cab, short bed, 2wd, 5 speed, V10 2nd gen dodge. Build the motor, boost it at least 12 psi, and put some fat ass Hoosiers in the back. That would be a killer setup.

The only issues I faced was the need for a correct y pipe in the correct diameter and least restriction. Magnaflow makes a 2.25 dual inlet to 3 inch outlet. Then I had to add more pipe because I threw out the big muffler too. Right before the rear axle is where it goes to 4 inch. Kind 9f like a big horn. Louder the better imo. Anyway removing the hoses is easy. They just pull right off. Hose clamps are holding them on. They are rubber. Anything other help needed just let me know.

Nice truck Shawn! I want to ask some questions but I'll watch your other vids first before I ask to many. One thing I noticed was how fast that thing fired up. Is that from the tune mainly or the wires, the battery or all 3? And did you say what you get for mpg? I just picked up a 97 V10 long bed. I have a 98 12 valve as well. Love the smooth quiet engine of the V10 and it accelerates effortlessly but on the Hwy my 12 valve blows it way. So much more torque and it's only got slightly bigger injectors and straight pipe. The rest is stock. Thinking of selling it and playing with this V10 though. Like you i'm thinking turbo. Anyway great videos keep them coming.
@shawnedwards27006 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks. My truck has always started this quick since I put this motor in. The 2001 V10 that was in it didnt like me ghetto fogging like a 300hp shot of nitrous at WOT already going about 70. It ruined the hood and inner fenders when it popped. I got a V10 engine out of a 1999 V10 Wrecker that sat for a long time. It had maybe 50k original miles. I pulled the engine apart and replaced all the bearings, seals, gaskets, valvetrain, etc. There is an entire kit you can buy online specifically to rebuild these motors. I have 10mm wires and original coils. I also use the copper plugs the motor needs. Let's see...my starter is Mopar brand and battery is pretty good. I'd say that might contribute to a good ignition setup. Now about my mpgs. I have a Hemifever Tune but soon to have a FRP Custom. I'm thinking the only reason i get great gas on the highway is because of the tune and 3.55 gears with 35 inch tires. Keeps the rpms at 1200 going 70. Honestly I don't ever truly need to get past half throttle even with my gears. I can't imagine what 4.88 gears with 37s. There would be no traction at all in the rain. Anyway I recommend a good gas torque convertor for you 47re. Maybe even a better valve body. Most your loss on these V10s that no one else realizes is is the poorly built trans and how downtuned from the factory they are. A canned or custom tune on your V10 will make your 12v easier to sell. Trust me. Parts are also cheaper too. Alot of the performance parts made for the 318 and 360 magnum interchange. Summit also makes a Stage 1 Cam.
@shawnedwards27006 жыл бұрын
I get 13.5 to 14 mpgs no matter what.
@WillSheMakeit_6 жыл бұрын
Holy shit that's awesome.If you factor in the added price of premium what does it work out to? I can't see me getting the 93 tune just because fuel is so expensive here. As for have more power than my 12 valve it would take alot of tuning and mods I think. That 12 valve pulls like a freight train. Just has bigger injectors I think but thay aren't that big because it hardly smokes. I'm trying to find ways to justify keeping the V10 but I pull my toy hauler ( 11,300lbs) and i'm in the mountains so I can only imagine the mpg I'll be getting lol. So when you say 13-14 mpg is that U.S mpg and hand calculated? I will see what I have this tank but last time I just burned 1/4 tank then topped it off and I was getting 8.2 mpg. I haven't owned it long enough to experiment with different fuels yet.
@WillSheMakeit_6 жыл бұрын
And actually ghis trany was just rebuilt and shifts nice and firm so prolly has a shift kit as well. When this truck hits TC lock-up it just doesn't have the power tonfo much but my 12 valve just pulls and sets you back in the seat as the needle climbs. I think this V10 with a turbo would smarten it right up.
@shawnedwards27006 жыл бұрын
@@WillSheMakeit_ Tuning does some serious wonders my man. I highly recommend it. My truck co.es 300hp and 450tq from factory at the crank. With the tune I'm definitely getting that to the 35 inch tires. It's just to easy to toast them and I'm Detroit locked in the rear and spider gear welded in the front. I live in the USA yes. Gas costs me 3.50 a gallon on average and exact milage is usually right at 13 to 13.5mpgs. I honestly cant wait to get a twin turbos on this.

It would be pretty wicked with a Cummins but I've already went through that faze. I've since moved on to this and I figured once the 488 V10 8ltr motor is completely built with added turbos itd probably do better than most diesels. Plus parts aren't as expensive amd NO ONE else will have my setup.
