You cannot totally future proof with any particular piece of hardware in a PC but there are things you can do to make your quality of life better as the computer ages. Monitors for example tend to age very well so if you get a nice, 4K 144HZ monitor now, it might be hard to run in 2021 but it will pair quite nicely with better hardware in 5 years. A 1TB NVME SSD purchased now doesn't make a ton of sense for most games but it will in another year or so when we are well into the new console generation. Some parts of your PC can be easily recycled when you upgrade your system in 3 - 5 years. Those are the parts to spend as much as you possible can afford now to reduce e-waste and save some money later.
@kaseyboles303 жыл бұрын
Bigno. Go long term on parts that are chanhing the slowest Shorter on items that go obsolete faster. A good case,psu,monitor can forward a lot farther than a cup or gpu. For a long time ram was a good thing for long term, however with ddr5 coming as soon as q3-q4 2022 it makes sense to hold back if you can till mid 2023 on going for top ram.

All I have to say is, I am SO glad to have been watching Tech and Rogue since last fall when I was deciding what I was going to put into my new build. Between their deal recommendations during the Oct.-Nov. sales and analysis concerning the fiasco that was the 3080 launch I became very motivated to find the best deals BEFORE Black Friday rather than wait on all the new gens to launch (we all saw how that went!) and not only ended-up with a great deal on a CPU/MB combo, but actually ended-up with a GPU that returned twice what I paid for it on the resale, thus lowering the cost of my 3070 to $100 UNDER launch price. Now, I have a i9-10850K on an Aorus Master z490 w/ 64GB 3600 RAM and an Aorus Master 3070 that would have cost at least another $600-700 to build had I started from scratch today.

Some components are worth future proofing and others aren't. A really solid CPU can typically last 4-5 years before it becomes a bottleneck to any GPU. Same goes for all associated components such as the motherboard, cpu cooler and RAM. A PSU doesn't need to be upgraded unless your power demands start exceeding its capacity or it becomes faulty. Storage can pretty much last until it breaks. Basically, the GPU is worth upgrading every 2-3 years and everything else isn't.

Hmmmm...with the competition heating up for cpu and gpu products... possibly similar to 1990s...would it be preferable to stay in the upper mid range of pc parts (5800x & rx 6800) and be on a 2 year upgrade timeframe...vs...top end pc parts now and upgrade in 4 years... because of high performance leaps happening very quickly?

I bought my 3600x for $200, sold it for $180, bought my 5700xt for $360, sold it for $320. By upgrading and selling parts before they devalue too much I essentially spent $60 to "rent" them for a year and now have the cash to upgrade to a 5600x and 3080

I like this kind of question and explanation, Im the kind of person that also that wants to forget about whats inside my pc and just play games and not worry about my performance. I started with an Athlon 200GE build for my first computer then gradually upgraded the Ram, added a RX 580 then upgraded the cpu to a ryzen 5 2600. Im basically like a textbook person who can upgrade the pc atleast 1 part at a time. im planning to keep the CPU for atleast 2-3 more years then upgrade those parts and later in the year (if scalpers are still a thing that is) gonna upgrade that GPU to a RTX 3050 ti. i like my build keeping it atleast on the midrange specs in terms of gaming.

Im in the same boat as the guy in question. I want to build and forget for the main system except GPU. So i got the 5950x that i want to stretch to or pass 5+ years maybe 10 max depending on what's out and how much faster the new tech are for the 10 year marker but 5 years I'm ignoring all tech tell then GPU not included in this plan lol.

First question is what do you do with the used parts. Second is how many operational computers do you want/need in your house. Both can be moved down in rank if you use your computer for business purposes. Those determines more than anything else. I use three x86 computers at any given time and have three PI 400's. Plus NAS and a PI 4 (pi hole). Multiple WiFi for security/vpn. So I upgrade or buy a new computer and bump down the old parts/computers until the worst one for the garage is replaced. I also hate dealing with selling used parts. Might sound like a lot but five kids means the needs are large. I upgrade when the price is right. No need to tinker in my main computer. Value is important to me. Every house has different needs. College kids have different needs than working father's as an example.

@ManyFARTS3 жыл бұрын
Definitely get the 10900 unless you already have a motherboard that can support a 5600x if you're looking to not upgrade for a while. Although, even better would be if you can get a 10850K for the same price (or max €20 more). Better performance than the 10900 non-K. Just make sure to get an adequate cooler for the thing because they run hot haha.

I recently bought an i9-9900k on sale for $300 with everything else new except my gpu. I'm still deciding between a 3070 and a 3080 but in the mean time this new i9 has given new life to my 1070ti. I'm holding off for now because of the mining boom. I figure if it crashes around Chinese New Year then I might have a better chance of getting one of those gpus.

I buy my cpu for 3-4 year cycles and sell for about 50% of its value usually and use it to upgrade to the next bang for buck upgrade but it's gotta be at least 30% higher on performance. I feel upgrading specific parts is a very good thing to do, I feel it saves more then to keep your components until they are so outdated the resale is not worth your time and can't recycle the funds from said part to replace it with the new part. Always try to time the market to resell imo.

Future proof. 7 years with an old i7-4700MQ (monster processor) laptop with 16GB (i will add an SSD soon) for music production. The price was around 1000 or 1300 dollars back in 2013. I did an undervolt on the i7-4700MQ and it is a beast beating the i7-2600K, 1932 in one thread and 6090 overall passmark score. Laptops nowadays have very bad price/perfomance rations, at the same price point, you get a similar processor (i5) but better GPU (the only thing that aged very badly from my laptop but it wasn't that good either back then, GTX840M is a low middle end).

I'm the kind of guy who enjoy tinkering and building computer. Never had a computer that was worth more than 1200 euros and that's not about change. I won't go upmarket simply because 2500 euros is the kind of money I would invest in my motorcycles, not computers. I built my main rig in December, 10400f, 16gb of ram, a used gtx 1080 and a 1TB nvme ssd. That's a solid 800 euros build in my opinion. Runs half life alyx like a charm.

I prefer future proofing a bit more. I want a solid system for no less then 3 years. And only upgrading around year 4 or 5. Depending on the needs of the time. So far it worked out well. Had a pair of gtx 970s that worked in sli for most every game I was playing till cyberpunk. And a 1700x up at 4ghz. 16gb of ram to round it out at 3200mhz. All has been well for a good 4 years with some minor storage increases over time.

Agreed. 6 cores is fine for now. 8 is better. In three years, 6 will be bad, 8 fine, and 10 better. Ideally, if you got the money and wanna keep for 5+ years, go 10 or 12 core.
@davidgunther84283 жыл бұрын
Motherboard selection and timing is the biggest future- proof vs upgrades question. If you want a 4- year system, new versions of things like USB and PCIe or NVMe can happen. This can make getting a platform late in its life cycle a roadblock to upgrading later on. Get the newest motherboard with the features you want. AM4 has been very long lived, with issues for AMD from supporting it through 3 CPU architectures. AM5 might not be committed to as long given forward compatability difficulties.

To futureproof best, need to get the latest tech even if it's a mid-grade so you can later on do a GPU upgrade, maybe add more RAM and SSD space and it should last 5 years. I did that on my last PC and it went just great up to 5 years with a GPU upgrade in third year. Just pay attention to price/performance rather than getting the absolute best and it'll do just fine with optimized setting tweaks.
@schubidubap3 жыл бұрын
I like tech, but I like a working system more. I'm not really the type who tinkers constantly. So I always go "one shelf up" from what's considered the best value for current games. Such a system usually lasts me 5 years with a GPU-Upgrade somewhere in between, despite me being kind of a snob for when it comes to running games with high details and fps. This route also ensures that I only upgrade once there is a need for it. For example; I built a completely new system in the beginning of 2020: Asus X570-E; 3900X, 32GB 3600 CL18, 1TB NVME, 2080 Super.
@thetroll38843 жыл бұрын
For me I usually go for the middle; not the highest not the lowest, something like the 3700x with RTX 3070 will do pretty well for me. I will usually upgrade when my PC start getting in my way of getting the job done, around 3 to 4 years seems a reasonable time. That way I don't spend too much while still get good performance, and that money I didn't spend on a higher graphics card or a CPU will be used when I upgrade my PC which will bring more value since(usually) the same price you paid for a CPU or graphics card will buy you considerably better one after 3 to 4 years. For example: you buy a 3700x + 2070 super = 330$ + 500$ = 830$ or you buy a 3950x + 2080 ti = 750$ + 1100$ = 1850$ difference = 1020$ After Just one generation of CPUs and graphics card you can get almost the same performance(if they were in stock) for : 5950x + 3070 = 800$ + 500$ = 1300$ were you were paying much more for that level of performance and that happens Just in one generation (of course if you are just gaming you can get 5800x which is much cheaper), you can use your PC for 3 or 4 years then you can upgrade for a much better performance with that money you didn't spend on the top high end parts + you can get more money by selling you old PC if it still worth something.
