Crossing the Divide--Weathering the Storm
May the Fourth be with you…May the Force be with you…
On resilience and yoga… We are here, navigating the storms of life…our own personal storms, the collective storms we face in this world.
We are here on our yoga mats to cross the divide within ourselves…so that we can show up lovingly here---we call that compassion, AND so that we can show up lovingly in the world so that we might help close the divide out there.
Physically this is a playful class, one that will get you into your body, into the present moment, let yourself have fun, get out of the box, we might even laugh a little.
Come join me for a live class: drarielleschwa...
I borrow the words from Inaugural poet, Amanda Gorman who wrote:
“So we lift our gazes not to what stands between us, but what stands before us. We close the divide because we know to put our future first, we must first put our differences aside. We lay down our arms so we can reach out our arms to one another, we seek harm to none and harmony for all.”
If only our world could embrace these words
Yoga helps us listen to and wake up to the internal narratives that we carry, that dominate how we perceive ourselves and others. We are invited to take greater responsibility for our stories, by refining them until they are filled with truth tempered with loving kindness.
Here is a quote from the Post-Traumatic Growth Guidebook:
“As you take responsibility for your narrative, you will be better able to assert yourself as the hero or heroine of your own life. You are no longer a victim; rather, you are the brave and courageous protagonist who, with the right support, wise guidance, and hard work, finds a way through trauma and into triumph. As the master of two worlds, you know the territory of pain and the realm of possibility. You can integrate the wisdom gained from the hard work of trauma recovery and find ways to return to the ordinary world without losing hope or feeling disconnected from your true self. Although you may sometimes over-identify with your limitations or your pain, it is important to discover a connection to a larger life purpose. Eventually, it is this wisdom that will allow you to be a guiding light and an inspiration for others.”

How the worst day of my life became the best
By Andrea Gibson
When I realized the storm was inevitable, I made it my medicine.
Took two snowflakes on the tongue in the morning,
two snowflakes on the tongue by noon.
There were no side effects, only sound effects.
Reverb added to my lifespan.
An echo that asked:
What part of your life’s record is skipping?
What wound is on repeat?
Have you done everything you can to break out of that groove?
By nighttime, I was intimate
with the difference between tying my laces
and tuning the string section of my shoes.
Made a symphony of walking away from everything
that did not want my life to sing.
Felt the love for myself so consistent
metronomes tried to copyright my heartbeat.
Finally understood, I am the conductor of my own life
And will be even after I die
I, like the trees, will decide what I become,
Porch swing, church pew,
Envelope that must be licked to be closed…kinky choice
But I didn’t close
I opened
and opened
and opened
until I could imagine the pain was the sensation of my spirit not breaking.
That my mind was a parachute that could always open in time.
That I could wear my heart on my sleeve and never grow out of that shirt.
That every falling leaf is a tiny kite with a string too small to see
held by the part of me in charge of making beauty out of grief.

Yoga poses, worship deities. That’s why a lot of people don’t practice it. I would do it if it was simply stretching though.
