The Bounty Hunters Catching Pythons In Florida (HBO)

The Everglades in Florida are plagued with dozens of invasive species, top among them is the Burmese Python. A pet sold in stores throughout the US, when it gets too big or too old for its owner it typically gets released into the wild. When this happens in Florida, where the Everglades tall grasses are identical to Southeast Asia, the animal thrives, breeding in huge numbers and eating whatever it wants thanks to a complete absence of natural predators. On the heels of a viral video showing a burmese python wrestling and killing an alligator, the director of the South Florida Water Management District launched a program to hunt snakes throughout his district.

Pythons are notoriously hard to locate in the immense stretches of south Florida wetlands where they thrive. They don’t readily enter traps, and their natural camouflage is incredibly well suited to florida. These 4 hunters in 10 years caught only about 500 pythons. There are hundreds of hunters catching them in Florida but there are 30,000 pythons. That seems very difficult.

Possibly, although keep in mind that snakes are not warm-blooded. But there's another tech advance that's being tried with great success: male pythons are now being implanted with microchips that emit tracking signals. When these males are released and tracked, they're often found with females. Recently a couple of these decoys were discovered along with 2 large "mating balls" totalling 11 females. Animals themselves aren't a problem, it's humans, naturally, these animals probably would have a very slim chance in entering these lands or water areas, but humans either deliberately or accidentally put them there. Thus it has to be humans to take care of the mess because we are the ones who made it. But I think they should hire more people around 50-100 minimum

In English perhaps, these two words have taken the significance they have. However, if you want to be precise, autopsy actually means "seeing/observing by your own means" ( from the Ancient Greek αὐτοψία : αὐτός autos + ὄψις opsis), whereas necropsy means "seeing/observing a dead body" (νεκρός nekros + ὄψις opsis). And in Greece, we use the word νεκροψία nekropsia, whatever the dead body is.

I was thinking that, make something like an eel trap just for snakes over a certain size. Small ones would still get away, but I’d imagine that a bobcat or raccoon could get away more easily from a 6ft snake than a 10+ foot one.

Please tell me we either utilize the meat or utilize having the animal carcass to further our understanding of these animals. I’m all for supporting what is going on here, my parents live just outside Miami, and I have been to the beautiful wonder called the Everglades several occasions. If we are going to support nature, I just hope we remember this is an animal at the end of the day, just like a shark, just like a dog, just like a giraffe. They were not out here to be killed off by humans, and I just hope we do something productive with having to use such extreme measures to protect these ecosystems. Sorry, nature guy venting over here!

considering a female python can lay 20-100 eggs per year.... considering theres already a few thousand of them out there... removing a few hundreds of python a year wont make a dent....sadly to say. Edit: I'm not trying to be negative, just realistic. Look, if there's already a few thousand of snakes already ...let's say like out of 2000 snakes, only half of that or even 25% are adults, and let's say literally the minimum(2) amount of those 20-100 eggs make it to adulthood and reproduce....we're still talking about an additional 1,000-2,000 of snakes every year....

This is so sad. I lived in Florida in the early 2000's and kept snakes. Reptile stores were everywhere and I was too young to understand wild caught snakes. I had Ball pythons and a smaller Suriname Red tail Boa (which was wild caught and only lived 5 years) but I was in awe when I saw a Burmese Python in a store. I can see how it got out of hand. I'm in my 30's now and keep fish aquariums but avoid wild caught fish. I'd love to breed fish species that are extinct in the wild soon.
