I understand that the reputation of the UN has to be upheld and that if these incidents are punished, countries might be more reluctant to send their soldiers. But UN needs to at least organize internal courts and give opportunities to victims to speak up, and before all they need to stop sending trained soldiers to peace keep. Used to admire the UN so much when i was young. I did model-UN multiple times, went to college for global security and refugee migration with the dream of joining UN. Then, as I did my research on refugee movements in South Sudan, Sudan, I saw how many dozens of reports from locals of mass abuse on behalf of UN officials and how many of these localized migrations were after UN peacekeeping forces arrived. Then I looked at every place in which the UN is operating and compare. Then disillusioned, looked at the internal policies and saw how 5 countries use it to exploit en masse and how dictators use the UN to fund their own human rights violations. What was going to be a paper on how the UN Peacekeeping forces can bring stability and bring in long term security became a paper on how locals and refugees can create defensive measures to protect against both UN and local forces. It is a truly sad affair when refugees are exploited by an institution meant to protect them and are exploited on all fronts. UN is a joke, sadly. If you want to help, join a local NGO, or someone highly credited like B'Tselem.
@dragonstormdipro10133 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I have talked to multiple former Indian peacekeepers who worked for UN, and they hated everything about the organisation. The bureaucracy, the mismanagement, the pathetic supervisors, the terrible people masquerading as "aid" workers, lack of co-ordination, training ... @@Johmatri You are free to do your own research. Ive worked for NGOS in Cambodia and Colombia and the United States. I know hundreds of colleagues in the industry including people who formerly worked for the UN. Many if not most people I know and have worked within an NGO have a rather negative perception of the UN and its subsequent branches. To say im denying any good they've done is a strawman to detract from the original point. Which is that the UN is broken beyond reform and is used as a vehicle for the powerful to abuse others and escape accountability. And many of those refugees wouldn't be refugees if the founding members didnt engage in imperialism and then intentionally draw their former colonies borders in such a way that guaranteed conflict during decolonization and subsequently corrupting the entirety of their political systems for capital gain in the post colonial globalized era. Also, cough, Rwanda.

Changes that have already been successfully employed in places like 6th of October refugee camp in Egypt. The main guy I dealt with told me that the high-end escort services watch the UN schedule for NYC very carefully because it's a huge part of their more important and profitable business, and that the security guys had to "deal with this" aspect when protecting principals they were contracted to protect (would get told name and description of a "lady visitor" that they need to facilitate "contacting" the principal, would be told when/where it would be going down, or "let her in the hotel and hotel room when she shoes up", basically). I'm glad that this topic has opened up by VICE. This is not much talked about but my dad used to tell me things about UN especially this one (since he has formerly worked there and would tell me stories about his time in UN both good and bad and the things that's not much talked about such as this one). Sometimes, I just simply don't like what's going on in some institutions. UN is supposed to be sticking to their values, mission and principles but heck I don't know what's humanity anymore. The people who seated in power are either corrupted or greedy for power or abuse their power or take it in full-advantages or all in one, heck these people don't realize they're representing an international reputation for public service in a huge risk to destroy the image of UN but as sad as it sounds, my dad would say "UN is supposed to be this, but, if you delve deeper it's not as beautiful as it seems and so is their vision and mission. There are lots of secrets they won't tell and I tell you, I don't know everything about what's happening in there but I can assure you there's corruption and greed for power to either for the purposes of abuse and gaining respect or not some, for the intention to good but who knows? That's all I know by far." I can't forget how I was shocked when he told me there's huge corruption, greed and abuse. I didn't hate UN. Nor do I hate UN. I just hate the people who were seated in power who mismanaged these types of people employed.

Power corrupts, it's a law of human nature. Corruption has a direct relationship with the size of an organisation, because power increases while accountability decreases, and the incentives for payrises and promotions become more about internal politics and less about the supposed goals of the organisation (Pournelle's Law). Anyone in favour of big government, and especially global government, is either naive or very callous.

There's an obvious issue here that would be resolved quite simply, stop sending men to humanitarian missions. Opportunists are lining up to these UN jobs because they know what they can get away with.
@allhailthemightyicecreamco54483 жыл бұрын
Well, not that many women are willing to be a UN peacekeepers compared to men. Especially like what the video said, most peacekeepers came from developing countries that probably wouldn't send their women. I really think the problem here is that the UN fails to screen their to-be peacekeepers properly. Then again, other humanitarian jobs that are majority women, like health care officials, teachers, aid care workers, and stuff like that is the last group you'll see in a sexual exploitation data.
