I donated my time to help build a base for a Vietnam memorial at our local town, A group of veterans got together using their own money, donations and time to build it. In memory of Daniel R. Romanko and Michael J. Clifford , All my videos are my ways and ideas, I always suggest anyone doing any type of work to consult professional help.

It’s mind boggling that you couldn’t find enough matching brick to do such a small project. I was still in High School when we pulled out of Vietnam. One of my cousins was in the army around 65-67. He wound up doing a tour of duty in Germany. His brother enlisted in the navy and served aboard a submarine. One other cousin joined the navy back then and at least saw the coast of Vietnam from an aircraft carrier.

Hi Mike. Thanks for another great video. Can you explain about where you wet the forms so they don't stick? I thought wetting surfaces makes them stick more. I am pouring the pad for my shed soon and was wondering about using something to make it easier to remove the form after. (Other than buying a 5 gallon jug of form oil, which is available in the area, but way too much for a small project).
@MikeHaduck
@MikeHaduck 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Old, I wasn't worried about them sticking because they were taken off a few hours later and I knew I was going over the holes with portland, but I would have used oil if it was sidewalks or something, thanks mike

Another straightforward video :) loved it. Mike how much more you will fill the joints depends on budget/support ? I know from previous videos you don't fill the brick holes (expansion/contraction) but joints.. When u make it a "bigger deal" about them?. Also based on your teachings for rebar and how they impact older structures. Any future videos on how new methods, non steel rebars/ composite filers (plastic or Fiberglass I.e.). I like to build make to last. Maybe patching down the road but the less us better. Wonder how big skyscrapers get away for age....because..they are built for x years then blow them down?. Merci. From Prince George, BC Canada.
@MikeHaduck
@MikeHaduck 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Merci,, well I would say my videos are food for thought, every situation is different and masonry is not black and white, I am not always familiar with new techniques and materials but I try to pass on what I have encountered over the years and let the viewers make their own decisions, thanks Mike
@MikeHaduck
@MikeHaduck 2 жыл бұрын
HI Leonardo, I consider my videos food for thought, I believe you learn more tearing down old buildings because you can see what worked and didn't work and pass the findings on, masonry is not black and white but has lots of variation to it, I can't expand on new materials or techniques as I am still old school and when other contractors or principals there is not much I can do but follow suit. Time always tells the outcome, I appreciate it, Mike

Another fantastic video Mike! Great job. Just curious, I know you're a big fan of the old school Portland/sand mixture, but could you have just used your S mortar mixture to patch up those form honeycombs instead? With Portland getting harder to get (and more expensive!), I've found myself wondering if some of these pre-mixed mason bags with Portland are the way to go. Maybe not since they have lime? The Rapid Set Mortar Mix is the ultimate but isn't cheap either.

Hey Mike, how come they don’t sell cement in buckets instead of paper bags? I think the buckets would keep longer and be easier to hump around and less messy than bags. Plus, buckets are reusable and would be free advertising for the cement companies. Why don’t they do it?

Also, it’s totally unrelated and merely food for thought. But I wanted your opinion on this. I watch another guy who is a lawyer named Steve Lehto and he did a story not long ago about a guy who had a mailbox out by the curb that had been hit a few times, and so he intentionally overbuilt it. Using stone and brick and put a footer and a post 36 inches deep and there happened to have been a car accident and the guy in the car was injured when the car hit the mailbox and caused it to flip and the guy became paralyzed and tried suing the guy who put the mailbox in. Eventually it was determined that the mailbox was not in the road, that it was as though it was a tree, which wouldn’t yield either. They were trying to argue that the mailbox was fortified to become an immovable object, and that it’s nature contributed to the guy becoming injured. I guess they were grasping at straws. It would be like if someone tried to say that this memorial was so overbuilt that a car crashing into it would liable you in some way. To me, the memorial is in a park. It’s not like you built it in a lane of traffic or something.

Hi Joe I am a fan of that guy, I watched a lot of his videos, in our case the borough approved it, I my mind all the inspectors should take the liability, thanks Mike

Cap run off. One of your other videos showed cap run off damage which could have been prevented by making a slot on the cap's underside to break capillary action. Is there potential damage lurking for the monument? That's a fine tribute to inspire and remind us that freedom is not free.
