Thanks for the great lesson. I don't use vignettes much, but when I do I keep it simple. One color wash leaving lots of white on the paper.

I'm coming back 2 weeks later to say thank you so much for the inspiration! I'm absolutely burnt out on botanicals, and seeing your starfish and seashells has made me realize I could take inspiration from all the ocean documentaries my cats insist on! Corals and seaweed, turtles and sharks, catfish and octopi -- I've done all of these and more since starting this self-isolation.

I did calligraphy as a hobby many years ago. So I'm used to the mess but you say those nibs are not correct equipment for this. I learned watercolors in 2014 after I'd had a stroke so I think I could probably give this a go. Thanks for de-mystifying it for me!

This was the right push at the right time! Similarly to the previous commenter, I find myself painting a flower or other object and then being totally clueless about an appropriate background. I think this is a great solution and will be trying it right away. I fell back into painting during 'confinement' in France, and your video courses have been a huge inspiration. Please continue!

Hi Marlene, I have so many videos I can't remember, but I have my own beginner set of brushes, very good price at Jackman's Art Materials UK (not Jacksons) even if you don't want to buy you can look up the sizes. They do vary slightly between brands though.

I will absolutely try this! I really love that seashell painting! I love how you turned the yellow ochre into sand by splattering lights and darks. Did you tap your paintbrush to do that or use a toothbrush?
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much 😊 I used a toothbrush. If you search my channel you can find a beach tutorial which will show you the colour mixing etc.
@annettefournier96554 жыл бұрын
Thanks Michele. I will try some of these. QUESTION: do you recommend putting in the background before painting the subject drawings when the colors are contrasting? I find myself frequently painting a subject then realizing I have to put in a background. I found using your technique of dropping color away from the edge of the subject then bringing it in to meet the edges is a much neater technique for me. Thank you again.💜
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber4 жыл бұрын
You are welcome Annette 🙂 What I will say is that backgrounds hastily added half way through often don't work too well. Ideally plan your background from the start and get at least a layer of it down. It may be as you reach final stages of the painting you will want to adjust the tonal values a little, and strengthen the background in places, but that's to be expected.
@annettefournier96554 жыл бұрын
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Thank you Michele. I will try and remember. Sometimes I'm just too excited to start painting a good sketch I don't think of the background until I'm well into it. Then go , oh crap! 🥴👍

Thank you so much for this informative video! I recently did a wet on wet background with varying strengths of soft green, let it dry, and then painted flowers with soft, muted colors on top. It turned out pretty well! I have a question: Does the salt in any way harm the paint or paper? I realize it is brushed off, but does the residue cause any damage long-term? I've never seen any youtube video artists address this. Thanks again! Donna
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber4 жыл бұрын
In reality anything can damage paper including some paint pigments and impurities in tap water. The salt is removed so the residue is minimal. It depends how far you want to go with these things. In the two world wars soldiers in the trenches made paintings with things like blood and coffee... And they are really hard to conserve because bacteria loves to eat them. Everything rots given enough time 😏 I have salt technique paintings 15 years old that show no signs of damage.

I don’t know what a vignette is!
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Жыл бұрын
It's a photo or painting with an edge, usually circular that softly fades to white paper.
