Fun fact. For the Louisiana purchase. The US used a British bank. The French would use the money from the Louisiana Purchase to plan an invasion of Britain. So in a sense the British were funding a French Invasion of Britain.

Canadians often consider the War of 1812 to be the formative event of Canadian national identity. There were only a handful of British soldiers and officers in Canada at the time, so the defense against the American invasion was in the hands of local Canadian militias, and the forces of the Mohawk and Ojibway First Nations. The British commander was competent, but was killed in the battle of Queenston Heights, near Niagara. In the end, it was the First Nations who kept Canada from being swallowed by the U.S. James Douglas did not oppose the settlement of ALL Americans in British Columbia. He sent a ship down to San Francisco to recruit settlers among African-Americans. Many took him up on the offer, and settled in Victoria, where they became merchants, teachers, and the backbone of British Columbia's militia. For several generations, they remained the commercial elite of Victoria, and their descendants are still there.
@shronkler1994 Жыл бұрын
so you say, if the indians weren't around, american canada could've been real?
@philpaine3068 Жыл бұрын
@@shronkler1994 Alternative time-lines of history are always difficult to imagine, because any small change can create huge differences in the future. However, yes, I think that if the Mohawks, Seneca, and Ojibway had not fought in defence of Canada, the American forces would probably have been successful in their invasion plans. What would have happened next? Hard to say. The English-speaking settlers in Upper Canada (what is now called Ontario) might have come to accept American rule eventually. However, I don't think that French Canadians would have accepted it, since their language and culture would have been in great danger under American rule. They probably would have strongly resisted that rule even if they were initially defeated. The British were only capable of controlling Canada because 1) they guaranteed to French Canadians the full freedom to retain their language and practice their religion, and 2) they honoured and maintained the treaty alliances with the First Nations that the French had made before them. These were essential to the fur trade, which was the only reason the British wanted to control Canada in the first place. It was this arrangement with French Canadians and First Nations that was one of the things that angered the American colonists and led to the American Revolution. The Americans, both as colonials and later as an independent nation, were constantly engaged in war against the First Nations whom they despised, while in contrast, Canadians depended on First Nations economically, were politically allied to them, and to some extent were culturally integrated with them. In Canada, First Nations leaders such as Tecumseh and Thayendanegea are regarded as national heroes, for whom statues are erected and institutions named after. . . . . It is also highly unlikely that the Americans would have been able to conquer and occupy the eastern colonies of Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, which later became part of Canada. The most the Americans could have been able to accomplish in the long run would be to incorporate the southern agricultural region of Upper Canada into what would later become the American Midwest. By flooding it with American settlers, they could have maintained control of it. P.S. - in Canada, the term "Indians" is never used. They are usually referred to as First Nations in English, or in French as Autochtones or Premières Nations. For one thing, about two million Canadians, five percent of the country, trace their origins to India --- and referring to First Nations as "Indians" would cause great confusion. Similarly, no Canadian ever uses the term "Eskimo" for our high Arctic citizens. They are always referred to as Inuit.
@tonytouchz7574 ай бұрын
@@shronkler1994meh, it helped but at this point Indians were more of a weak meat shield then anything… one of the decisive battle was in Quebec City and was completly won by the citizens of the lower city which doesn’t include any Indian. Indians were mostly neutral in all this
