I am an 85 year old classically trained singer and, like you had never heard of Lara Fabian. This is one the best performances I have ever heard and, if one can listen to this without tearing up, you have no emotion. She was born in Belgium, was raised in Italy, knew she was born to sing at five, spent ten years in classic voice training, moved to Canada when she was twenty and speaks French, Italian and English fluently. Currently she is approx 50 and still singing.

This is one of the most complete, emotionally generous, technically perfect and theatrically coherent singing exhibitions I have ever heard in my life while taking the French Chanson to another level. The ability to flow virtuosically and so naturally from a narrating airy pianissimo to a full painful round singing, always choosing the "right" color is of a truly rare quality. @@TheCharismaticVoice :) (sorry if my English isn't really always good cause I'm French) Hello, I discover your channel today and so subscribed. And your emotion has so much touch me. I must admit that for myself I never resist to this song and have much difficulty to not express it by tears. There are so few songs and performers who achieve this feat. Maybe two or three at most. So it was even more difficult in this video when I felt like you yourself were about to let one of it leak out and run down your cheek. I am 53 years old tomorrow and I know this song since its release in 1973. Indeed, Serge Lama had sent the autographed record (LP) of his hand to my mother. My father had worked as a valet (person responsible for driving and parking cars) at L'Olympia (Paris) by Bruno Coquatrix a few years earlier (at the end of the 60s so). And so, it allowed him to get to know certain artists who often performed for several weeks on stage including Serge Lama (who at that time was not yet very well known since he was the opening act for an artist. more confirmed than him). So I have a special link with this song that I heard so much. Serge Lama has written and performed many wonderful songs such as "La chanteuse a vingt ans" (The singer is twenty years old) which immediately reminds us of Edith Piaf or Barbara as soon as we listen it (even if it's perhaps not at all of them whose discussed). But also "Les Glycines" which evokes an impossible love between two cousins. Or "L'enfant d'un autre" (The Child of Another) which speaks of a man unhappy to be separated from a woman who had a child from a previous affair and to whom he was terribly attached. And of course "D'aventures en aventures" (From adventures to adventures) which evokes his wife whom he lost in a terrible car accident which he had in his youth, died of her wounds and he who remained hospitalized for many months (that's why he limps with his right leg since). Coming back to Lara Fabian's phenomenal performance, I'd just like to point out two things that maybe you didn't bring up (like I said I don't speak fluent English so sometimes it's difficult to understand exactly everything you're saying). The first is the fact that she leans forward several times as if to support the words and let out the feeling they cause, as if in some way she was vomiting them. For that she was, I think, inspired by Serge Lama himself, who very often practices this gesture in his songs and of course in "Je suis malade" (I am sick) of which he wrote the lyrics (the music is by Alice Dona) . The second is when she says "I drink every night and ...". In a fraction of a second her voice becomes rocky just like that of a woman who would make a scandal outside under the effects of alcohol because she's very unhappy and in distress. It's just perfect. At this moment, we say to ourselves that she's an incomparable singer who could just as well be a very great actress. :)

@@morphilou It's pretty well known that Fabian was signed by Sony when they had Celine Dion (who was taking a hiatus due to having a baby, I believe.) Dion's people were fretting that Fabian would cut into Dion's market share and were instrumental in getting Sony to first push Fabian into more a dance music direction then cancel her time working with collaborators she'd been promised/hoped to work with. And then dropping her/Fabian gave up and returned to working in Europe, Russia, Asia, South America. In the end, knowing how important writing and producing is to her, it probably was the best for her. Not the best for me and my fellow Americans though. 😢 I've really liked a few of Dion's songs, but to me Dion to Fabian is like an 8 pack of Crayola Crayons vs the 120 Deluxe Box set. 🤷🏻♀️

@@richardblais7445 Serge Lama was having an affair, it was love at first sight but both of them were married. They both loved each other in secret for years, and eventually planned to break up with who they were with at the time. That woman changed her mind and had to move to another country, which obviously left Serge devastated, and he decided to write this song to express his pain. The funny thing is that song was written in a hurry (more or less 20 minutes, according to him)! Roughly 10 years later they found each other again, got married, had a child together, but she eventually died from a stroke which gave to the song a whole new meaning...

This song was released in 1973 by Serge Lama. It was written due to a heartbreak he endured after someone very special left him. Mrs. Lara Fabian has done this song justice by adding a woman’s heart felt feelings possibly for the same reasons. I am grateful you decided to react to this song since, and with some minor changes, it falls into your wheelhouse of “singable” songs. On a personal note, should you decide to grace the stage with your presence, please let us know. Patrick S.

I love when people react to Lara Fabian, because most have not heard of her before. She is an amazing singer and vocalist. I feel as though it is a huge disservice for vocal coaches who do not react to her because her popularity isn't as high can make them miss and someone so special. She self-describes herself as a song-writer with a voice. Though she didn't write Je Suis Malade, she really makes it her own and convinces you that she must have written it. She also said one time when she started out as a small time singer, that no one paid her any attention, so she said she had to demand people to want to watch her. Hence the theatrical nature of her gestures and singing. You may not see this, but aside from the common recommendations, I HIGHLY recommend you react to: 1) A Piece of Sky/Papa Can You Hear Me (She's wearing a white suit in a very old video) 2) Voir un Ami Pleure (En Toute Intima). The second song I listed is a lot like this one. She doesn't do anything vocally crazy, but if you want to react how she acts through her singing...that is a good one too. 3) Je'taime - she has many performances, but personally I love " Lara Fabian Je t'aime Les années tubes ". Other common recommendations: Adagio, Broken Vow, Caruso, You're Not From Here all from the same concert as this one. One thing I loved about your reaction today is you really hit the nail on the head with who she is, without knowing anything about her.

I was curious, knowing that Fabian is a talented composer and songwriter - and producer- herself, so I dug up Serge Lama's early recordings and performances. Long story short, Fabian fiddled around with the arrangement pretty extensively, and every choice added to the dramatic build perfectly. So much so, after this, Lama incorporated some of her choices into his own performance, like making that one section a cappella.

Lara is so phenomenal and captivating that it was kind of easy for me to first not realise that this is a great composition that stands on its own without vocalist-at least, to me.

And in the end, she holds that emotion for about 30 second, while the crowd cheer. I've just found this amazing performance on other channels. Then came across her live in Paris trying to sing 'je t'aime'. It seems she has many devoted fans and rightly so. Worth watching. Sheer brilliance.

She is indeed a legend. It is not by chance that Dimash looks up to Lara. "Je t'aime" is also a phenomenal song. There is a live version where the audience is just amazing and Lara again, is able to "on the fly" opt for perfect nuances and changes. I live her voice, her colours but above that, her delivery is an example to most female (or male) singers. Thank you, Elizabeth for bringing such fun and joy to your analysis and reactions. You always keep it professional and real but you bring this joy and passion about the entire process that is so contagious. Thank you so much for that.

For me this is her best performance ever, since the emotions have blew me away. The second most emotinal clip about her is Lara Fabian Je T'aime Live Concert Warning! very very VERY emotional! (pl.s note "Je t'aime" means "I love you". "On t'aime", We love you !) kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4iliaqXhJ52bMU But I have to admit in this her singing quality is even more secondary in this one, but it's an experience to watch. Cheers from Hungary!

My music choices have always been based on artists that truly move me with their performances, and Lara Fabian has always done that. Every song comes straight from the heart with deep feelings, like she believes the lyrics completely. One of my favorites is "Caruso". It makes me cry every time I listen to it!

She is so amazing. I discovered this video when looking for French songs of my past, and couldn't stop it in my head. I had to listen to it every day sometimes more than once a day because it haunted me. Listen to her other songs. They're all masterpieces

Try the original version: Serge Lama - Je suis malade. This song was written for a man. It's powerful too. Lara had to put all her soul into it. It couldn't be otherwise.

Lara Fabian has one of the best female voices on the Planet and, when you combine her artistry, it is one of the best performances I have ever seen!! The emotion is so over- whelming that, I need to wipe tears from my face so that I can see.

Simply LARA! She is so underrated and theatrical, emotional, and so on cue with her perfect tone and tenderness. One feels every single emotion she evokes in this song and it is so hard not to just break down. The words of the song also packs a big gut punch.

I've watched this performance so many times!! There's getting into character.. Then there's this!! She invokes so much emotion and is so vulnerable when she sings. I don't think anybody can ever cover this and really do it justice. Even if they have the vocals down. I don't know of too many artist that can lay it bare like Lara.. The only other person i can think of is Jacques Brel. Not so much on the vocals but the emotion and being that vulnerable. Its beautiful.

So glad you did this song from the wonderful Lara Fabian; she deserves many more honest and emotional reactions like yours. You felt it. She is performing with the voice, heart and her whole body, gestures. There are performances in equal quality from Lara like Adagio, Caruso or Perdere L'amore from the same concert night. Lara not only sings, she lives emotionally this song,a cocktail of sadness, resignation, anger, and those voice transitions from low to high without a wrinkle moving on her face, that sigh after almost every lyric, and final, she stays almost 1 minute in that story of the song until she interacts again, with the audience!!! Great voice,i love her!
