Honestly, the Peugeot wins for me overall... Both the Toyota and VW are too bland in comparison, and I like my cars a bit different. The 407 SW still looks amazing 20 years after release. I like the mechanicals of the VW, and they always feel great to drive though. The Toyota you'd think would be reliable, but the 2.2 D4D actually has a few large issues, unlike the Peugeot 2.0 HDi which is extremely robust. The only thing I'd be concerned about with the Peugeot is some of the electronics, with the same being said for the VW.

Tough one this as i have known 3 people with the passats and they have been really unreliable to the point all but one got rid withing 8 months. 1 had massive issues with the immobilizer push in key fob electronics cost him £2000 and Engine light was still coming on, Second had massive issues with DSG gear box and wiring loom, Again cost him thousands! the other had too much to list. I have had my 407 SW 3 years now with 114000mls on it and touch wood has never gone wrong... German build quality eh!

Having been in many of these three examples as taxis, etc., I don't think I could own an Avensis. Very boring cars indeed, and surprisingly, it probably has the most problematic diesel engine out of these three. The VWs always ride nice. Very distinctive characteristics with feel and sound. The Peugeot feels slightly less refined than the VW, but they just have a certain something about them. The PSA diesels are top notch as well, especially the 2.0 HDi, closely followed by the 2.2 HDi.

If you buy the 407 , you buy a car , that has more than two lines in its design , compared to the dumpsterwagon, its hot and sexy! Yes they are. but I personally don't like the look of the 407. allthough its still only my opinion. ofcourse toyota isn't nice car, but it has no compromises. basic-looking family car. And the passat is more expensive-looking, well it is most expensive of the three. im not toyota fan but i would still take avensis.(again its my opinion) second hand i would have 407 becouse of its reliability too.

Who the hell reviews these cars?.....my avensis is every bit as good to drive as the two BMW's that I've owned before and the build quality is as good too but the one thing these cars do better than almost any other manufacturer is reliability I've owned mine a 2 litre petrol with only 33.000 miles and it has given me trouble free motoring for almost a year.....also this stupid reviewer is going on about passion and emotion which really only applies to supercars and classic cars not cars that are basically workhorses and the Toyota dose it's job admirably.
