Japanese manga have come a long way!
The modern manga took off during the US occupation after 1945 and since then, the industry in Japan and abroad has reached new heights.
Fast forward to 2013.
Today, there's more to manga than just manga. There's a whole culture surrounding Japan's comics and one part of that is the manga cafe called "manga kissa" in Japanese.
Don't let the word "cafe" fool you -- the services at manga kissa go beyond reading manga with a cup of coffee.
Not only is it a place to read a manga in a quiet place off the busy streets of Tokyo, it's also a place where you can get some privacy with a date watching 3D movies or even spend the night at an affordable rate.

This show has been created and produced by John Daub ( ジョン・ドーブ ). He's been living and working in Japan for over 15 years and regularly reports on an International TV Show for Japan's International Channel.
Casting light on quirky, funny & amazing Japanese culture in a way only seen through the eyes of a foreigner! Join us as we penetrate deep into the heart of Japan!

These would never work in america..... The books would be practicality destroyed, the computers would be wrecked or filled to the brim with malware, and the booths I wouldn't even want to describe .................
@keekermojo
@keekermojo 10 жыл бұрын
Oh god, I know. Plus the free nail/drinks survive would never work because the company would get a scummy with people taking advantage of it and people would probably just rent the booths for some lunch break quickies or some mid-day office porn. So sad how we can't enjoy cultural differences without it becoming a hassle. (I also think a date to one would be so adorable)

trip1666 "not including that some days/h can cost more due to rushours and food"... Dude, you're meant to pay in advance, that way you would of already paid a FIXED rate and not have to be burdened with rushour prices (if it did exist). As for food, nigga you don't have to buy food from the place, just go outside and to the cheap grocery stores. Remember, I just said that it's "cheap as fuck TO RENT", that does not include food costs because you don't pay your landlord for your own groceries.

+Leazowa96 The only problem is its really hard to market in the states. most anime/manga stores i've seen close down after a few months or so due to little customers coming and going. not to mention many Americans have access to the internet and basically browse for free manga/anime sites. Americans are more introvert than the Japanese are, so a manga cafe wouldn't really profit in the US and would eventually close down quick. While some Americans love the Japanese culture, sadly its not enough to be able to keep something like this open in America.

I was there last week and don't be fooled by this video. It is a non-smokers' nightmare. The floor is divided into two sections (smoking and non-smoking) but the sections are laid out so that all the smoke from the smoker's section flows through and towards the non-smoker's section. I couldn't even stand to stay a minute in that. It felt like as if someone was smoking inside your own booth!! A true ventilation nightmare.

Sorry for being late but my Sensei told me to was Mah-n-gah. I would rather believe someone who spent almost all his life in japan and speaks it fluently than someone i just met online ...
@zoeygirlyful
@zoeygirlyful 7 жыл бұрын
After over 2 years since I first made the comment I would like to mention the reason on why it is pronounced Mah-n-gah. The Japanese alphabet, Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji has specific ways of pronouncing characters. Unlike America or other countries where one character can sound many different ways. Example. The letter A in the American alphabet can sound like Ah for Auction or Ay in Away. Of course sounds can very depending on where you live. So like a southern accent sounds more different than a persons sounds like lets say California. In Japan though, from the knowledge I have gained in my 2 years in a Japanese language learning class in high school, there is one set sound for each character in a Hiragana and Katakana alphabet. You could use one character to make a different character to sound more closer to an American word, but again accents do take in affect. So for the Hiragana character for Ma will always sound like Mah. And the A character will always sounds like Ah. Same for the I character will sound like E, which always confused me through the year but it stuck with me with its wonderful difference. So the Mi character will sound Me. So there is your small information on the Japanese alphabet that you have learned on you tube! Japanese alphabets are confusing but mostly because there is 3 different alphabets in the Japanese alphabet industry. Fun fact. Hiragana is most commonly used alphabet while Katakana are used for sound effects like Mwha or the sound of a beating heart. Katakana has different uses to like a lot of american words would be translated with a Katakana alphabet. Now Kanji is basically one complicated character that means one huge word. And the word Senpai is actually not just for a person you look up to like a teenage girl to a cute boy, but can be used respectfully to address an older student or a person who has more knowledge on one subject. Like I could be your Senpai for knowing so much Japanese or you could be mine for knowing more. Now to end on that note..... SENPAI OUT

bethismagical lol sexist-sounding indeed but it could also be a money-making tactic; men probably make up more of the market for that sort of thing, so they'll use these cafes regardless. The women-focused ones and the lower prices for women are a good way to draw in new female customers or maybe sway those considering when they see that they get a discount.
