I just love how Superman handled him in Justice League. When Grodd discovered that his mind control powers were no problem for Superman, Grodd let out a pathetic "Oh!" before Superman used two of his fingers to launch Grodd for a field goal. Imagine what would have happened if Superman had used his whole fist.

Yes, that's part of the n52 origins for sure. Instead of getting their high intellect and mental abilities from "aliens" in the n52 the speedforce was the source. Grodd himself learned to use the speedforce to boost his mental abilities further.
