I don't understand modern game studios. Do they not see that making legitimately good games would absolutely rake in not only money, but also mindshare? Look at Rockstar - like it or not, by making absolutely killer games, Rockstar has created a culture where people would likely be okay spending $100+ for GTA 6. That's how much trust their consumers have in them. On the other hand, Ubisoft have become known for making "slop" [Ubislop]. In another life, I might even feel bad for them, but it's 100% their fault.

Making games is a huge risk, and the landscape can shift massively in the time that you're developing it (look at what happened with concord). If you can make a lot of money in 4 years of development, you could spend another couple to make a hyper polished game full of content: maybe that sells more or maybe it flops - why risk it when you can release a good enough game and make almost as much anyway. GTA V is an insane outlier in its initial sales, but it's also worth saying that a lot of the revenue that game has generated has come from churning out unpolished, often lazy online content.

It’s led to a pretty enjoyable experience. I will play devils advocate tho to this comment section and basically every comment section of videos on this game I saw a video of this and I agree. We are ALSO to blame for this. Did Ubisoft drop the ball failing to give us a true AAAA game? Yes. For sure. I like the game but it’s not a AAAA by any means. But every time they try to change the formula it fails in selling. Ubisoft knows the AC formula works so they gave us an altered version of an AC game in outlaws where exploration and stealth is key while straight combat should kinda try to be avoided. Ubisoft gave us the prince of Persia game, an entirely different game. And yet nobody bought it. We keep crying for change in Ubisoft games yet when they do it, with the prince of Persia game, nobody cares to buy it. That’s how a lot of gaming companies are. Same with LSWTSS. People wanted a new amazing Lego Star Wars game and yet when we got TSS people complained that the formula was different, primarily the level designs. I’m not defending Ubisoft. They can 100% be doing more. But we also need to figure out what we ACTUALLY want, instead of just crying for change and yet when change comes we don’t like it

It's not good, it's not bad, it's just okay, and there'd be nothing wrong with 'just okay' if Ubisoft weren't so relentlessly and shamelessly avaricious. For that kind of money, expectations and the standards the game will be held to will inevitably go up. Arthur Morgan kills people just as much as Kay, but the story in Red Dead actually makes that mean something. Kay is written way too much as a good guy, and not enough as a morally ambiguous person. She should do bad things and some good things too, but not enough to paint her as a hero. This is also a problem with pretty much everyone in the game. No one is threatening or believably cruel. I don't mean sex and gore, just a sense of maturity. I remember how 'Republic Commando' made a lot of people think we were going to be getting a Tom Clancy-style special forces thing for any sequel, but it never happened. Ironically, the single player campaign for 'Battlefront 2' DID have some of that during the very early parts - and those were the best sections it had. Versio could have been an amazing Imperial character if she had simply defected to an Imperial splinter group, instead of the rebel alliance. Her change of heart was outright bizarre, considering she must have seen people being harassed by stormtroopers on a fairly regular basis.

To argue that the disney era was not damaging to the gaming scene for star wars is a neat little hill to die on. If we take a look at outlaws, fallen order, the EA battlefronts, and squadrons, it all relies on heavily eras not associated to the new disney trilogy. As for game play comparison, you bring up Commandos, which with all its modern short comings still fits in to the design of the era, which is 2005. Then you bring up the criticism of Outlaws being different shades of ubisoft games which highlights the issue that these are not criticism of the holders of star wars (lucas then disney) but simply the hired gun and perhaps short coming of the games of their respected years. And most of all the choice to limit game production to a single publisher for 10 yrs is in fact damaging and is tied to Disney. Not only does it strife innovation due to a monopoly, it greatly limits the what genres will get attention, as well as the output as you mentioned. So within 12 yrs since 2012 acquisition time, we only got for new titles in total are 1.5 first person shooters, 3 third person uncharteded-like(simplification term) games, and 1 small sized classic style space game. And maybe 1 hero shooter, not sure if released or in beta, don't remember the name.

It's extremely evident that the pre Disney star wars games were far better at the time than the post purchase era. Middle of the road is not good enough considering that both EA Battlefront games set the record on their releases for worst release of all time. The problem is not that the games are mid, it's that they are trending in the wrong direction with few exceptions and Disney doesn't care.
@MrWill98942 ай бұрын
Hot take: I don’t think every Star Wars game needs to be a AAA, expensive to produce, high-visual-fidelity project. Especially now that EA no longer has the exclusive license, I feel like we should have already been seeing smaller, less expensive passion projects, which would definitely soften the blow when the big expensive games aren’t as well received as expected.
@CNTconnoisseur2 ай бұрын
It takes a bit to get into it, but I'm liking it more and more. I really like the reputation system. It's fun to hunt for treasure. The shootouts really feel like Star Wars. Keep in mind, I bumped up the difficulty. I just think that the generic story drags it down. They think it has so much weight with this big introduction, but it was just slow and generic. The game would be much better if they just threw you straight into it, without the main character starting from the bottom. Maybe the first sequence could be something that actually introduces you to the mechanics. What if there's a standoff with the 3 syndicates and you had to make a hair trigger decision right away?
@mistermeow5272 ай бұрын
I think part of this problem is that modern AAA game budgets are just absolutely ballooning as standards and modern competition rises. But this scale budget has come at the price of development time and there's no way to "crush" the time because that would just be a further inflation of the budget by say throwing more bodies to work on it. The simple reality may be that the reason we don't have a rush of Star Wars games now (and even EA's time) is simply the consequence of these ballooning budgets in both money and time. Heck looking back at some of the biggest games during the Star Wars golden age are more or less now within the space a modern AA or dedicated modern indie would be in.

I don’t understand the mentality that if you don’t enjoy something, it means you’re making a personal attack on those who do. I hesitate to call most of the modern Star Wars content “bad” because, at the end of the day, someone somewhere worked very hard on that product-whether it’s a movie, show, video game, book, etc. Personally, I just find most modern Star Wars material uninteresting. But if you enjoy it, more power to you; I’m genuinely happy for you.

Accepting mediocrity and not criticizing it so that nobody has their feelings hurt is games journalism 101 these days so you must love that environment. That mentality causes the subsequent releases to get worse and worse. Hold the devs feet to the fire on bad/mediocre releases, if they're an actually solid team the message will be received and the next content they release will take those criticisms to account. If they're not a solid team, it'll continue to be mediocre slop, and then you let that company wither like it deserves.

After all, there’s no “opinion police” when it comes to entertainment. With so many different kinds of people in the world, not everything in a franchise as big as Star Wars can, or should, be aimed at one particular type of fan. The strongest criticism I’m willing to make is to simply not buy something; that’s what corporations pay the most attention to-their bottom line. I think the comparison with Republic Commando may be apt in describing part of the problem with Outlaws. Republic Commando was short and a decent shooter with squad mechanics that weren't that in-depth (although still may hold up better than their age suggests because few companies tried to innovate or iterate on that type of squad mechanics). However, Republic Commando had style and vibes out the wazoo and characters we cared about because of our passive interactions. A middling game with an unapologetic style will get love because it begets a strong response. Outlaws...is a very Ubisoft game with rough edges sanded down and valleys filled to be as mass audience appealing as possible. It doesn't seem to take risks or invest heavily in some mechanics to give a distinct playstyle. It doesn't have that instantly recognizable visual style, characters that draw you in, or strong story. Once the Internet Rage Machine is done with it Outlaws will likely be an okay Star Wars game that's kinda forgettable--inoffensive and unremarkable. I *may* buy Outlaws when it goes on super-deep sale (and Ubisoft stops sucking as a company, but that is another matter). Talking about Republic Commando has made me want to reinstall it and play like rewatching a favorite movie.

If we're going to compare Star Wars games during the Lucas Games era to the EA era, the sheer amount of games (good or bad) was staggering in the early 2000's. In a 10 year period for EA, they put out 2 Battlefront games, 2 soulslikes, and a space flight sim game. EA SHOULD have just been the publisher and let practically anyone handle the series. They probably canceled as many games as they actually released. EA had a golden goose and seemingly had no idea what to do with it.
@runakovacs47592 ай бұрын
As their smallest defence, video games have much longer development cycle these days than in early 2000s due to expectations of more advanced physics and graphics. Also length. This does not excuse EA, but fewer games make sense.

One of the problems is that a lot of these big name companies aren't really interested in making unique, quality games, they're interested in only making as much money for as little effort as possible. AAA studios are not where Star Wars should be focused on, Disney needs to expand the license to smaller studios that have more passion and interest, and aren't completely consumed by the 'all of the money now and damn the consequences' mentality that so many others have.

I'm going to have to disagree on a fundamental stance Eckharts has on disney star wars. All in all star wars hadn't experienced positive upward growth since Disney had obtained it. Disney had only bloated the franchise, building out on what had already been established, and in many cases doing this poorly. I personally don't judge games, tv shows, and movies based on how the franchise is as a whole but on its own merit. Ask yourself this question, if this was a new IP would you even bother with SW Outlaws? More than likely, no. What about SW Squadrons? Hell yes, a polished game with fantastic controls and features with support that was killed off far too quickly. Discounting my own opinion, is Outlaws a failure or not worth exploring? Well.... in this I agree with Eckharts. Don't bother unless its basically free or the price of an expensive lunch.

I think it's a combination of timing and Ubisoft's current lack of care put into any of their games. If the game came out in 2015 after EA Battlefront 1, people would still buy it on recognition, but they'd then compare it to huge games from the time like GTA5 and it wouldn't end favorably. The game is full of missed opportunities, and while I agree other games like Republic Commando were missing content, these were basically startup companies compared to Ubisoft's near infinite resources and huge pools of talent. Ubisoft has just really lost their way, and it's right and appropriate to recognize that even though there was some effort put into the environment, the whole game was made on autopilot instead of the talent Ubisoft used to be known for.

I remember coming to THIS channel ALL THE TIME and just geek out on Star Wars lore/deep dives, all of the different Star Wars Spaceships 🚀, bombers, dreadnoughts, and Tie Fighters etc.. and I just think it is really cool that it was my fascination with Star Wars Squadrons that got me so hyped for Star Wars like a little kid again lol 😆 Cheers mate!
