@Adelaide938 4 жыл бұрын
Krystal B what factors? How is this up for debate? It’s on state maps, but hey have stars on the flag, they get to vote. It’s not something you can agree or disagree with. They are part of the US. That’s just a fact.
@krystalb661
@krystalb661 4 жыл бұрын
Tori Miguel they accept that it’s a state but don’t believe it should be. It’s not like they don’t know that it isn’t, it’s just that they don’t believe it should be. Firstly, Hawaii was its own independent nation and many argue that because of military occupations it still should be. And secondly, many people disagree with the actions that led Hawaii to be annexed by the US. John Green is actually one of the people who deny the legality of Hawaii being a state. As for Alaska, this tends to be more of forgetfulness because Alaska is so separated and US culture/society doesn’t affect them as heavily. This is why you’ll see people say “Hawaiians and Alaskans” rather than American sometimes.

The homophobic is so plausible. reminds me of the call I had a literally a week ago at the store I work at. We have different departments but for the most part we answer anything. I answer and the man asks for “the guitar guy”. I told him we don’t have anyone in specifically for guitars and said something along the lines of “but I could be your guitar guy, how can I help you?” For some reason that set him on a weird transphobic/sexist rant saying I couldn’t be a guitar guy and I sound like a woman and how he is tired of women wanting to be men and vice versa. I put him on hold and called my boss over because he was closest to me and said “some douche on line 1 for you” and walked away. All that for the word “guy”

I used to browse Not Always Right occasionally and even posted once; let me tell you, the editors really love to change your story. They seem to add in these "everyone clapped" moments or inflammatory details that will get the story more attention. It makes the stories more interesting I suppose, but I would rather the unedited versions. Every now and again you see the authors complaining about the changes in the comments. It's wild.

To be honest, when I worked at tech support all of my female co-workers had the "transfer me to a tech support" at least once a day while it only happened with me once in 2 years, and there were actually some cases of people (not only men, but the majority was men) asked to be transfered to a male tech support.

There's nothing shocking or weird about people with tattoos. They're just like everyone else but they carry pieces of art on their bodies that often hold dear meaning to that person. I've had a lot of weird/bad customers in my life, mostly in small towns, but there's one story that stands out. I was working at Walmart putting out picks when this thin older white lady with glasses came up to me. She wanted to know where the plain Ruffle chips were, so I took her to the place where all of the Pepsico-owned chips sat. She stated that she needed 1 normal sized bag of plain Ruffles. We had regular sized bags of the bacon & ranch flavour, a dill pickle one, and buffalo wings, but no plain Ruffles. Always trying to turn no's into maybes, I pointed out the 6 pack of snack-sized bags of regular Ruffles, she was not having it. That's when out of the corner of my eyes I spotted a party size bag; That was a bag that was 1.5x the size of a normal bag. I picked it up and said, "Here's something!" I thought I'd found the perfect substitution, I was getting ready to pat myself on the back then, the woman clutched her purse in a sort of self-hug, she angrily exhaled and squeaked "I'M NOT ALLOWED TO BUY THAT! I'm not having a party!" I calmly said "No, no, it's not exclusively for parties, it's just 1.5 times the size of a normal bag...." and she stormed off, assuring me that my manager will hear about this. What did this woman think would happen? Are the secret police gonna knock down her door and demand proof that she's having a party?

It's one of the few fields where it's so blatant and shrugged off too. I guess because people have that stereotypical tech support image so ingrained into their mind (even some people within the field have that view too, though I don't know how common that is). While it only happened to me maybe once or twice (I worked in a company where everybody knew who I was and was lovely, it was usually visitors or outside callers who would be like this), I have stories like this from my buddies and the few times it did happen to me were almost cartoonish (such as when somebody asked me when tech support was coming...when I'd announced that I was there and was half-way through repairing the computer; that was a good one).

I've met at least 2 dozen people who either, by conversing with them, realized they either 1. didn't know Hawaii is part of Ameica, 2. FORGOT Hawaii is part of America. Yes, we accept US dollars. Yes, we have wireless internet. No, you do not need your US passport to come here. No, we don't all know how to surf and do hula. Oh, no you’re right...yes, in fact we do communicate via coconut, how did you know!? And ok since you insist that you know better than me, a local, then I guess we do live in grass shacks. Sure. When people come to Hawaii, they just turn off their brains as soon as they land, I swear...

@MegCazalet
@MegCazalet 3 жыл бұрын
The site Not Always Right was for stories about retail workers and other people who deal with nightmare customers and clients. I used to read it about 12 years ago ago. It’s hit or miss but it has some good ones. There was a huge trend for this kind of stuff, with blogs and books like Waiter Rant and Retail Hell and Kitchen Confidential and tons of other profession-specific “exposés”, even fictional but heavily based on true stories, like the Devil Wears Prada and the Nanny Diaries, which rang VERY TRUE from my own experience! We know there are horrible entitled people in the world, and they all have to interact with service people, which inevitably makes for anecdotal gold! I think of it the precursor to the video compilations of “public freak outs” and “Karens”, from the days before everyone could record everything. I believe many of them are wish fulfillment, or exaggerated “l’esprit d’escalier” accounts based on a true event, but I believe many of them are also 100% true. Because the videos we see now show what’s possible, which is everything.

Haven't been to Not Always Right in years! I did submit a story that got published back in 2009 or 2010. I used to work in a used bookstore and there were a lot of weird or annoying customer, but this one didn't seem to understand the principle of a bookstore that sold used books. He wanted books in a series but we didn't have one of the volumes. He asked when we'd have it. I explained we got books when people came in and sold them. He said he perfectly understood that, but wanted to know when someone would be in to sell their copy. It was definitely weirder than usual. We did have a program in place when you could let us know you wanted a specific book and we'd call if we got it, but he didn't even want to register for that so he just left. Anyway, I don't know about any of the other stories but from what I recall, my story was published exactly how I submitted it. Of course, users may submit anyone and embellish their stories. Nowadays I guess r/talesfromretail is the equivalent. I know the NotAlways websites had more versions (NotAlwaysRomantic, NotAlwaysRelated, stuff like that) but NotAlwaysRight was the original one, for stories of customers being idiots.

Answering my own post because it's already long enough and editing it would make it worse. I watched a bit more (now 10 minutes in) and you were complaining about the stories not being believable because people in Hawaii didn't know that Hawaii is a US state. It's not unrealistic, it absolutely happens. I'm originally from France (now a US citizen too) and when I worked at McDonald's in Paris there were so many people who were confused we didn't take dollars, and there was the one woman who asked why the other cashier (before I got called to the front because I spoke English) was speaking "Spanish". When I explained my coworker was speaking French she was confused and it eventually turned out she thought French people spoke English, but with a French accent, and had no idea French was a language. She was IN FRANCE. She had to have flown and heard all the messages play in French as well as English. She must have seen all the street signs in French. Surely she must have known. But nope. So yeah, the Hawaii thing sounds super believable to me. I do admire your faith in humanity though.

I don't know, customers can get pretty weird and demanding. A while back I was working as an online grocery picker for Walmart (like one of those people who pushes around a giant cart of baskets and does the shopping for the online orders). I'd been there for a couple months. A girl with the same job who'd been hired that week came over with an irate older lady in tow and said "Hey, she has a question, can you help her?" I figured she wanted to know the location of something or when something would be in stock. Turns out she had a a coupon for a free turkey, but there was a recall and it was close to Thanksgiving so we were out of stock of the brand on the coupon, so she wanted to know if she could get a free turkey of another brand. I have no idea why she thought a random teenager pulling stuff off shelves would know the answer to that. I directed her to the customer service desk, but she kept asking (3-4 times, I kept trying to walk away and she followed me) if I couldn't just help her myself. Uh, no, lady, this machine I'm holding literally just tells me what kind of crackers to take off the shelf next. I have no power over prices. I'm judged on my performance/pick rate (how many items I collect in an hour, no matter how many customers ask for help, the timer is still running) so please let me get back to work. So yeah, people are weirdly demanding of service industry people. Also, can you tell this story isn't fake, bc I didn't have a witty final remark, I didn't "own" her, the resolution is that eventually she walked off huffily and presumably found a manager to bother.

As a best buy employee, the DVD scene is hilariously accurate. Had an older lady come in very very angry that her portable charger didn't work. She asked for a manager, yelled at him, demanded an email for corporate. Eventually while fidgeting with it I pressed the power button and it turned on. She raised hell and she didn't even turn it on.

Okay sooooooo.... (warning i drag on) After watching Lin Manuel Miranda's interview with the collegeboard (for APUSH review) I was genuinely surprised to see how much effort he put into preserving the historical accuracy, while also being forced to summarize 40 years of history in around 2 hours. Pretty much, Lin admitte that he took a few of creative/dramatic liberties but many of them seem to be an interpenetration of real events that have either no or no unbiased source. Also (iirc) historical fiction is when you have a fictionalized story take place in a non-fiction setting. For example, All Quiet on the Western Front is historical fiction (even though many parts of the book are based on Remarque's experiences) because the characters didn't exist. However, Hamilton can't really be considered a historical fiction because the characters in Hamilton, DID exist. Personally, I think of it as a more biographical piece of entertainment. Yes, dramatic liberties are taken but no, it isn't ENTIRELY inaccurate and can be an actual good place to develop an interest in history. ps. I'm not in APUSH yet, (I'm in AP euro) but I watched the interview because I am genuinely interested in theater and US history (why I'm taking APUSH next year) Sorry for the long-winded comment lmao. :p

I came back to rewatch this vid cause someone responded to an old comment I made. I wanted to add, from personal experience, the thing where some weirdy needs help with his internet but won't talk to a woman is a real thing that still happens. One time I literally had a guy YELL at me that he needed a man and wouldn't talk to me. I tried to explain that the only thing I could do is send him back to the queue to wait for another 30+ min since I had no means to transfer him to a direct person, and he wouldn't even hear me out, he just insisted, so back into the queue he went. More often, though, it was just a subtle attitude of "you probably don't know what you're talking about." Lord I am so glad I don't do phone IT anymore.

I’ve never exactly heard that myself, but I’ve had it strongly implied that I wasn’t competent enough to do my job at a work/gardening supply store, as some customers would look for or chose a guy cashier for help instead of me. Jokes on them, those guys were just as dumb as me. I’ve also had multiple people (men and women) request or demand that I not lift things or help with anything physical, instead telling me to get a “strong boy” instead. Like... it’s 30 pounds, I think I can handle it, and the guys are all busy, I’m not going to hassle them.
