The more convenient and assessable agreement doesn’t hold up well. People just say it because it makes sense logically. KZbin is “free” and assessable but only a few succeed. Just like streaming. All this music but most people go undiscovered. Yes it gives you a chance to be seen. We place too much emphasis on the few who succeed and not the majority of people who don’t succeed.

Producer/engineer Steve Albini prints, exclusively to tape and tries to do vinyl for all the bands he works with. His thinking is that, in MOST cases, it will take decades (or more) for an audience to find your music -- if you're making interesting music. And, +as far as he's concerned+, there's only 2 formats that are guaranteed to be playable decades from now - magnetic tape and vinyl.

It IS about being accessible for many artists who don't have a YT channel that can be used for music promo. So u have a tad leg-up, but u also put in the work for that. 👍 It's crazy how "spread thin" our focus has to be as DIYers. I remember the days when u just made music to play shows and get a CD made. 😂

If you're old, ugly, lazy, or shy - you're sorta f'ed. That's not the way MUSIC should operate. ...Historically some of my favorites artists have been, at least, 3 of those things.

Streaming really is a double edged sword. As a listener, there's no way I could afford to purchase all the music I listen to, so I really do need a streaming service. Pulling my music off every platform would feel hypocritical, making my art inaccessible to people like myself. But for real the crooks running spotify deserve to be jailed. I REALLY hope Tidal doesn't follow suit. #cancelspotify

I forgot to add this in my previous comment: there are 2 ways to make a lot of money. 1st: high value × low volume and 2nd: low value × high volume. It makes sense that we need a lot of streams to make money, because the music is free, which is low value, so it requires high volume.

No disrespect to anyone's craft, but what if you use DSPs as marketing avenues and not as the revenue streams. I work in software and we typically allow for customers to trial or sample our solutions (sometimes called freemium) and upsell them to a premium offering. As an artist you could offer sample tracks, whether shortened or full length. If people love the flavor, you upsell them to your self hosted / distributed models to pay for access to your catalogue - however you want to serve it up. Just tryna help provide a solution.

An "INDEPENDENT" artist would make more money selling their on CD's from a "WEBSITE" that he owns, and an "EMAIL" marketing campaign, then what is being proposed with this "NONSENSE...!" There is a different "MINDSET" when an artist is only seeking "FAME," but, not the maximum potential for PROFITS. The motivation from a "BUSINESS" prospective has to be different. And, you can still buy a CD player, and still have CD's made, for "FANS" that prefer a "PHYSICAL" product. Streaming does not replace the desire for a "PHYSICAL" medium. A stream cannot be AUTOGRAPHED, and kept, as a "GESTURE" of appreciation. That token of "LOVE" from an artist, has more value for their "FANS.," then what is being proposed and offered by a streaming platform, for just a little more "NOTORIETY...!" Every "INDEPENDENT" artist should get away from this "NONSENSE...!"

Hey! I've been watching your videos for a couple months now, and the information has been dope! This has been my first year trying to release music, and I was wondering with the Spotify's threshold system, is there a way to sell your music "independently" and have it on streaming platforms and still turn some kind of a profit? I am a solo metal studio project/vocalist as opposed to a rapper, but I figured the information still applies? Keep up the good work homie!

I wonder if we're gonna see a bunch of songs release at the beginning of every month, now. If I'm understanding this correctly, it sorta makes no sense to release at the end (or middle...?) of a month unless you're doing hundreds of streams a day.

i think its actually really important we keep talking about it cause i know SO many creators and consumers who dont know about these rule changes and they’re livid. maybe spotify is hoping if they dont address it directing we’ll accept it like we did (and should’t have) before. i think we undervalue how much we can make a change as artists not only with our voice but also by transparency in our platform choices, which is form of leadership.

At some point in time, Spotify will either go out of business or get bought up by a large corporation who don't give two flying shits about music and then it will suck even more. Nothing lasts forever. The other major streaming platforms will probably suffer the same fate as well in the future. That's the way it is. When that happens maybe something more logical and equitable will fill the gap.
@OgIKidd

In my opinion, the argument of "convenience and accessibility" in defense of Spotify falls apart when you consider that a lot of Spotify users are free users who need some sort of internet or data connection. Those that do pay for premium have no control over where that money is actually going. Simultaneously paying more money than they probably would just buying albums. In the long term still being at the mercy of both the platform and the artists themselves regarding what is or isn't available. Whether the platform decides to cut ties after a controversy, an artist boycotts these platforms, or an artist just forgets to pay their distributor subscription, content is never guaranteed to remain. That's assuming the songs they wanted to listen to was available in the first place. Old mixtapes with uncleared samples, artists who have been embroiled in legal disputes with old labels like De La Soul, or in the case of someone like Lupe Fiasco, the artist in question not making any money off of those records because of shady contracts. So the argument of convenience ultimately just boils down to an unwillingness to store the art that they claim to care about, and an overall indifference about the treatment of artists because it doesn't largely affect the majority of people in their own personal daily struggles. Further feeding a system that has no other incentive to change.

That 1000 threshold is just wrong and it seems like theft to me. A stream in the US is worth about .0029 cents. 600 streams would normally get you about $1.74. Lets say you have 50 songs on Spotify and you average about 600 streams per track every month. That's $87 dollars you don't get. Spotify must really need the money.

Curtis, I wholly disagree with you. Gucci had to work to be where they are, the same for the brands we all know and recognize that wouldn't be in any thrift shop As an obscure artist (not even underground nor subworld), I can't afford to make myself even less visible So any exposure to a platform is good for an artist like me and others in the same situation. I'm glad you found a solution for your streaming issue, however, for us, who are below 100, 50, 30, 10, or even 5 streams a month we definitely cannot opt out of these platforms if we want exposure.
@CurtissKingTV
@CurtissKingTV 7 ай бұрын
The moment we choose this as a profession we must work to become what we want to become. If you want a successful music business, you shouldn’t be concerned with visibility more than improving your music and gathering the data (emails) of your potential listeners. What good is 300,000 monthly listeners when an algorithm decides how much access you’ll have to them? What good is exposure when you can’t communicate with the 100-200 listeners you have. Small artists are still small businesses that should conduct their business as such. Relying on platforms to do the job of your marketing and community building is a losing battle long term.

@CurtissKingTV

Would it be more noble of me to have this Spotify discussion without talking about WHAT I’m currently doing as an artist myself to combat it? Marketing is “how do I make my message the most clear to the people that need to hear it the most” not “how do I manipulate people’s emotions to care about something with little value and relevance” I’ve been an open book my entire duration here on KZbin. Playing on artist’s emotions is playing with my own. When I share this shit, I feel the exact same way. I started a dialogue that is bigger than my album, and I see so many of my peers asking for MORE when it comes to their music. I could have sold 1 copy, and this campaign would have been a success in my eyes because people are talking about the value of music again. That’s a win today, tomorrow, and after I’m gone.
