Today we are going to talk about LDN or low dose naltrexone.
This medication is often prescribed to treat medications such as weight loss, autoimmune disease and chronic pain.
But does it actually work?
Will taking LDN actually help you lose weight?
Will it help you reduce your antibodies or improve your thyroid function?
Will it actually take away your pain?
I discuss all of these questions in this video and I talk about how often it works for my patients.
The good news is that LDN has few side effects, so even if it doesn't work it may be beneficial for certain people.

I've been on LDN for about 2 years and it's amazing. Not only do I feel normal again, but I haven't felt this good in decades. I take it for Hashimoto's and have zero side effects. My thryoid numbers have been normal since taking LDN, my joints don't hurt, I have energy, a positive outlook and now believe I will have a long healthy life. I've never had a weight issue, but now I seem to be able to eat whatever I want although I do tend to eat very healthy most of the time.

No, compounding is not the only way to get LDN. A 50mg tablet dissolved in 50 CCs of distilled water, Naltrexone is water soluble, and then taking the resulting liquid will yield 1mg per 1 cc of liquid. And doing it this way is way cheaper.

This is an excellent video!! I love the analogy with a blood pressure medication that reduces blood pressure by only 1 mm/Hg. It's a simple, but great point. Hi Dr. Childs. I'm 69 years old with type 2 diabetes and was diagnosed with PMR in June by a Rheumatologist. She prescribed prednisone saying there was no other treatment available. and that I may have to be on it for one to two years. I started out on 15 mg, and the specialist reduced it 4 weeks ago to 10 mg. Slowly, I have been experiencing pain in all the same places as before, although it's manageable for me right now. The pain I was in from the PMR back in June was excruciating, and I don't want to go there ever again. I've been very concerned with my high blood sugar levels and informed my PC about them. She said "they are going to run sporadic as long as I'm on prednisone ." It makes me feel she just chooses to "look the other way" instead of looking into alternatives. I feel lucky to have found this video today and hope LDN may be an alternative for me, because I"m so fearful of the damage prednisone is doing to me.

After a few days of taking LDN I can say for sure that my appetite is diminishing. I would possibly call it an absolute cure for binge eating disorder. I only take 1mg daily sprayed directly on the tongue. The larger dose, 50mg did not work for me, I was constipated and gained weight. I was taking painkillers by the handful daily and now find myself not wanting it at all. LDN for the win!

I've been on LDN since last July for Hashimotos. Its definitely helped lower my antibodies along with helped get rid of inflammation I was dealing with and I did loose 10lbs more toward the beginning of taking it. It's not a significant amount of weight but it's the first 10lbs I've been able to keep off in years. I sleep sound except for the nights that I have vivid dreams, that is one of the side effects but even thats few and far between for me. I'm one of the patients who doesn't want to give it up..ever. It's not a miracle cure all drug but it definitely has helped along with the NDT medication I take. One more thing I know that's happened since taking it, it brought up or reactivated the shingles virus twice in me..the first time was pretty significant, the second time was much less and I haven't had anymore reactions for about 4 months so hopefully that's over. I've talked to other people that have had the same thing happen or other viruses that it has reactivated but same as me they were less and less severe each time and then it stopped. Thanks for the video. I always look forward to them.

I have Hashimoto's and wanted to try LDN to help resolve pain and other issues. I have read where some patient even have lowered their antibodies after taking LDN, so they lowered their thyroid meds. My Dr. Immediately said no. He didn't think there was enough studies to indicate LDN would help. I'm going to attempt to talk to him again about it when I go next week for an appointment. I know some Dr.s won't prescribe if they think the treatment is anecdotal. I hope I can convince him that it wouldn't hurt for me to try. I'm so tired of being sick. He ups my medicine and I'll be good for about a week, then here comes all the wonderful symptoms rushing back that inevitably lands me in the bed. It's quite depressing. Dr. Childs, thank you for sharing your knowledge! I have a question I hope you may be able to answer: Since LDN blocks the opiate receptors, can it not be taken in conjunction with Kratom? (Kratom is a natural herb that gives opiate-like pain relief by reacting upon the same receptors as opiates, but lacks the harmful side effects) I'm wondering if the LDN would render the kratom useless. Or can they be taken at different times without the kratom being affected?

No, do not use it with kratom or any opiates!..I'm a former 5 yr kratom user and finally quit 3 months ago..It is a nightmare over time and quitting is very hard..Your brain is storing endorphins while using naltrexone, so stimulating more with kratom or opiates would be too much once the opioid receptors free up..

What are your thoughts on Oxytrex? I had just titrated up to the 4.5 mg dose of Naltrexone and had surgery (pin in my foot). I was prescribed Oxycodone 5 mg tabs. I have to say that for me, the Oxycodone lasted longer in my system. I was recently diagnosed with Hashimoto’s and my body does not absorb medications like a normal person. My dr. (who is a MD that practices mainly naturopathic medicine) told me my body only absorbs about 30% of any drug. When I looked up Oxytrex it is so new that it was in Phase 3 of clinical trials in 2017. I liked the fact that I didn’t feel ‘high’ on the oxy/naltrexone yet it took the pain away and for a longer period of time! I also didn’t have to titrate off of the oxycodone. As a chronic pain patient for 15 years. I have to disagree ...narcotics absolutely do help. They gave me enough pain relief to participate in life with my children. I do not go to a pain clinic to get them I just do without. But now my children do without me as now they don’t have a mother that has medication that works long enough for me to show up to an event or a performance or anything.

I need to gàin , not lose. I've had several test done and nothing turns up in labs or an upper/lower GI. I have multiple health problems, one being Hashimotos. I take 3mg at night and this is my second month. Should I be taking this in your opinion?

Since your weight loss began 2 yrs ago, we can rule out the LDN for the cause. There are many things that can be a contributing factor. Even though your gi scans came out normal, I would suggest good probiotics. My gi's were fine, but I had terrible pain and bloating. I also juiced veggies that were good for tummy troubles. It did work. I'm going to assume your gallbladder was looked at, as well. Best wishes.

Also my mood was low and I felt very stange and tired all through the day. I have Hashimoto's and hoped to lower my antibodies. LDN helped to get rid of all the pain I had in my arm and shoulder. Hashimotos people should only be on 0.05mls daily. Anyone with any thyroid disease should start at 0.5mls and stay there for months or longer or forever and have ongoing blood tests to check antibodies and thyroid status as things can change fast and thyroid medications will need to be adjusted accordingly. I am hypothyroid(diagnosed in 1993 at age 42) with low levels of antibodies but never told I was actually a Hashimotos patient until recently. I went onto LDN 0.05ml liquid and within 2 weeks had to decrease my eltroxin medication as my T4 levels had risen past high normal range. I havent checked my antibodies as yet. I also went onto LDN for lower back pain and leg pain due to injuries from 2 falls and also for constant sensitivities/allergic reactions to foods which drove me crazy as Im already gluten, grain and dairy free. The pain problems and food sensitivities also noticeably lessened quickly even on that ultra low dose which I will be staying on for as long as it keeps working. Its so important to have good advice, be monitored closely and keep to the right level for you as we are all different and metabolize at different rates.

I then take 25ml distilled water and drop 1/2 (25mg) of a pill into the water and let dissolve. Then I take a small 5 ml syringe and 1ml equals 1mg. 1.5mil equals 1.5mg,, and .5ml equals .5mg. I purchased 30- 50mg tabs for $100. Do the math on how many doses you will get out of 1-50mg pill then multiply by 30.... . I had no insurance so I had do what I had to do. If you did the proper indepth research on LDN it says hashimotos and fibro, ME, chronic fatigue and other conditions need to start at 0.5mg and build up over a longer period like even 4 months or as long as it takes. Anyone having negative reactions needs to do this. We all have different metabolisms and body chemistry so you find what is the right level for you by starting at 0.5mg and build up slowly. Alot of people never need anymore than 2.5mg to get results. Likewise if you are on a lower dose and notice improvements but after awhile feel some return of the old problems then upping the dose usually works. Ive also read in my research people who have low vitamin D, which is a given with autoimmune diseases, dont get as good results as dont people who are gluten sensitive and eating gluten. Get your Vit D levels checked by a blood test and supplement if needed and stop eating gluten and all grains which you shouldnt be eating anyway with aut0immune diseases as they cause chronic inflammation resulting in your autoimmune diseases in the first place. You need to reduce your over active immune load by dropping these foods so your inflammation in your body reduces which will help your body heal. Check,out Dr Peter Osborne head of Gluten Free Society USA, Dr Tom O'Bryan world renowned Functional doctor and educator of medical professionals and people like us round the world who want to help ourselves who want to understand what causes autoimmune diseases and how to recover from them and put them into remission, also LDNscience.org which is a great site to learn all about LDN. Plus LDNresearch.com. Nobody should be treating themselves with LDN without medical guidance and certainly not buying it online and dividing doses etc. That is so dangerous as these online sellers can be bogus and mix anything into these drugs and not compound them properly causing uneven results. There are plenty of warnings about doing this if you read the appropriate sites with doctors and specialists who work with LDN. Of course doing everything right doesnt guarantee good results because not everyone does but doing it right has to be the better way to go. Goodkuck.

Try taking a small tiny amount. I have been on LDN for years on and off. Right now it is helping along with getting my Ferritin level up My back facet syndrome has been in remission for a few weeks. I’m hopeful. I only take 1 to a half mil. Of LDN If I take more then 1 mil it can make me nervous and jittery Go s l o w Best to you

Rubenn M.Vieira the word is tretinoin
@drwestinchilds
@drwestinchilds 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, tretinoin is a topical retinoid that treats acne and reduces wrinkles in the skin. I personally believe it's better to get it from over the counter face creams (like from Obagi) than from the pharmacy. The pharmacy loads it with several fillers and binders which can cause skin issues and irritation.

Modulates Cortisol?
@kimlebaron

Library Files does that mean it increases cortisol?
@libraryfiles4470
@libraryfiles4470 4 жыл бұрын
I read that it does but only a little though everyone may vary. I was thinking that if cortisol was raised do to pain and naltrexone lowered pain, perhaps it will lower cortisol in some. Ashwagandha lowers cortisol.

Library Files I have high cortisol plus hypothyroidism.. I’m about to start LDN and I’m just a little scared.. I do suffer from anxiety due to the high cortisol and I just didn’t want to make it worse.. what’s your experience with LDN?

Kim LeBraon I don’t notice any side effects from naltrexone. What is your cause of high cortisol? What are you taking to lower cortisol?
@kimlebaron
@kimlebaron 4 жыл бұрын
Library Files not sure why I have high cortisol.. I do have hypothyroidism and I know adrenals are affected along with thyroid.. I’m taking supplements to lower cortisol like Seriphos and ashwagandha..

I went through 4 chemos and a biological. Three of which I was allergic to. In addition it reactivated my Epstein-Barr virus and I have been sicker than I have ever been. And it didn’t do anything for my autoimmune diseases but back them multiple.
