I have a peak speed 33mph according to Strava on my 1999 Diamondback Apex about a month ago going down Lookout Mountain here in Colorado. I have to say, after hitting corners like that on two wheels going those speeds I'm absolutely hooked on the idea of getting a motorcycle lol

Never competitive on bicycles, but just daily-driving motorcycle I've seen what wind does to a motorcycle with solid rims. "Disc" wheeled Harleys were a popular aesthetic choice for a while, but when slammed into by Santa Ana Winds it would force them across the road tires screaming as they tried to fight the wind with out suddenly falling over when the gust ended. Even with "normal" rims the wind would shove me across the lane when the gusts hit. Quite the pucker moment. I think the cross-sectional area on those bicycles is much more - I don't imagine anyone riding a dual disc bicycle would stay upright in Santa Ana winds even in neighborhoods.

My admiration for your dedication to the channel increased with every revolution of that ‘front disc’! Back in the 80s a mate had a Shorter low pro with twin disc. The front was, wait for it, 24inch! He was about 6s per mile faster over our local 10 mile TT course, and could have been faster still perhaps, if he hadn’t sh*t himself with every puff of wind, or passing car!

Used to have a 40mm deep Felt wheel I got from the local triathlon shop for not much money as it came stock on a bike and the new owner wanted something more fancy. I had a £60 disc cover on that. Was fine for a 21 min 10 mile TT and a 54 min 25. Didn’t make a nice noise though which is the biggest downside. :)

This is pretty awesome to see y'all experimenting with disk! We/...some of us.... run carbon fiber rims on our bikes and recently have been experimenting with carbon disc mounted on our rear wheels for aerodynamics to get top speed. It really works at higher speeds roll racing between 160-215mph the gains have been backed with Dragy data! My bike would top out in 9/10ths mile at 209mph and with rear disc I'm hitting 212-213 mph back to back. I had to remove the carbon wings off my bike because they caused over 45lbs of down force at 195mph which scrubbed off mph. I really enjoyed the video and learning just how much stuff transfers over between our bikes, its insane how far technology has pushed us in the past 15+ years.

I had a disc on my front wheel on my BMX bike. I did a wheelie right as I was hit by a strong side-wind and my front wheel got blown side-ways and I flew off the road. I would race with the disc but soon realized it was dangerous. If I were to be hit sideways by a strong gust while in mid-air off a jump, I could get very injured or killed. It did look cool and my bike had a cool drum humming sound but that also meant my competitors could hear me coming as I tried to swoop them.

Mate of mine told me of riding with a pair of ‘Spinergy’ tri spoked wheels when he lived and raced in France-a strong cross wind made the bike lift off the road and dumped him in a ditch……… Top marks for trying it out Francis, but rather you than me-the 50mm deep carbon rims on my Roubaix get twitchy in strong wind-and we get plenty of those in the Fens…..

Been thinking about this...just for kicks. Recently I've built my own rear wheel cover out of thin pvc sheet. Planned it for a long time, so it went together well, looks cool, seems effective, and gives no trouble. I made a test cover first, taking what I learned to build "prototype II". Wrapped it in carbon 'fibber' vinyl wrap too. Looks real. I kinda wanna fit the other one to the front just to experience it.

Yeah it’s scary. I mounted 50mm deep on the rear and 38mm on the front on my road bike, thinking « hey, I have tons of experience mountain biking and motorcycling and I’ve been riding bikes my whole life, how bad could it be? ». And I discovered that on windy days, even just 38mm front is uncomfortable. 85mm must be plain scary.
@PauloSerra
@PauloSerra Жыл бұрын
I think it depends a lot on rim profile and the tire fitted as well ... I run 65mm deep front with no issues (and live near the sea, so lots of crosswinds) it only gets twitchy if the tire gets wider than the rim. It helps to have a deeper rear wheel as a "stabilising" effect. I used to run box section 24mm deep thinner wheels and it was not better (sometimes worse).
@joshpearson2529
@joshpearson2529 Жыл бұрын
@@PauloSerra That is interesting, I’m sure I ran 25mm Continental GP4000SII on them and really was bad. I’m surprised you have no issues by the Sea though, always breezy their. I suppose it also depends on the build quality and spike tensions etc.

recumbent riders often use disc in frontwheels. They made the discs out of Kite cloth, which is bend over a circled glassfibre rod. I rode frontdiscs on 2 bikes with 20Inch front wheels. 1 bike rode fine no issue, 1 bike was slightly uncomfortable. The geometry of the steering is very important for the handling in crosswinds. But with bigger wheels it also gets worse.

been said already but this is fairly common on recumbents. I've driven two recumbents with disc wheels, but due to the different handling it's not that bad. Also 406/451 wheels low down barely catch any wind. Doesn't really speed you up when you're 300lbs by the way.

what makes the wheels so dangerous? i would think it would be safer because in a multiple bike pileup there is no places for body parts to get caught in. unless bike weight is the problem where as the bikes are running within a couple grams of maxing the weight limit. a solid wheel would take it over the weight limit.
