How about you not hand-wave away the other slicers for reasons like "this only works on this particular printer". -- you said you were going to test the fastest resin slicer, but then you just handwaved others away. Test Vlare, Prusaslicer, and Photon Workshop like the title of the video says you'll be doing. Because those slicers comparisons, even if they only work with those printers, may be enough of a pain point that people want to dive into those ecosystems. It's dishonest to title your video the way you have, thumbnail it the way you have, and then pull this crap.

I have an elegoo 2k mars 2 pro resin printer, it has not arrived yet, amazon says wed, I found your vid while looking for a slicer, but found some info that you might find helpful, according to Prusa the Prusa slicer will work with any resin and extruder 3d printer if you set it accordingly, I also found a site that gives you every resin capable slicer, I got it when searching if Cura (which I use for my VoxLab Aquila) will work with a resin printer, and it said no but I would link the site, but youtube does not allow that, thank you. Anyways Prusa said their slicer is fully open source and will work with any resin printer.

I was actually surprised with these slicers. For many years I've been using Uniz Slash printers. And even the largest files take under 30 seconds to support and slice, But now I have a large format printer and tried the same stl in lychee. Not only did it take over 5 minutes to generate supports, it took even longer to slice. It really surprised me it is so slow and they want to change fees.

For the record, it's possible to use Prusaslicer with Chituboard based printers (like the Elegoo ones), but it's less straightforward : you need to first slice in Prusaslicer, which generates a .sl1 file, then you need to convert it to a .ctb file. I've made such a converter (sl1toctb) to work with my Saturn and my Mars 2, otherwise there is the awesome UVTools software that allows to convert between most known file formats (and has tons of other cool features to manipulate and fix files). Why would anyone do that? Because this allows to use resin printers using only opensource software (on our computer, at least ; printer firmware is an other issue). For people who don't like to allow unknown code to run on their computer, it's worth the additional time of file conversion. :)

In my tests I also noticed that the save times are a HUGE issue for Chitubox. Lychee it auto saves and doe sit in 1/8th the time. Im not sure what's up with Chitubox on this. But I'm saving to a PCI 4.0 980 Pro NVME that is 90% free. It also uses 8GB or RAM out of my 64GB and maxes out all 12 cores on my 5900x while saving. When I add in saving time. @@UncleJessy "I'd be surprised if the slicers actually produce different print quality results with the same settings" -> they produced different size of the output - is it because of different format of the file they use? I found that there wasn't a huge difference in slice times on my W11Pro ( i7 12700K, nVidia RTX2060 Super) PC between Chitubox or Lychee. However I did find that Chitubox had a slight tendency to add a small amount of AA at all times whereas Lychee didn't. As a result I got slightly smoother results on organic shapes in Chitubox but more accurate functional parts in Lychee. Lychee also allows me to have the older V2 .ctb files for my Mars Pro and V4 .ctb files for my Mars 3 available at the same time so the paid "Pro" version of Lychee has become my default now.

@kfeltenberger
@kfeltenberger 2 жыл бұрын
What has me curious is not the time (you couldn't pay me to use Chitubox), but rather the file size. If they're all being exported to the same format, with the same base settings, it appears that the Pikaslice is either exceptionally efficient optimizing the data as it exports it to a file, or something is missing. How does the output look between the three slicers?
@MaheerKibria
@MaheerKibria 2 жыл бұрын
I am not surprised. The beauty of iPadOS is the lack of overhead. Not to mention the GPU is consistent so by using a single unified API it's a lot easier to optimize for than the different configs that have to be supported otherwise. I really want to see if there are any pixel-to-pixel differences between these files and differences in print quality. All things being equal faster is better. However, print quality is king, followed by reliability so the speed is a distant last for me in terms of importance. Also when you do pc you need to include GPU specs. I have no clue what CPU is running and that makes a huge difference since it is GPU accelerated since it uses OpenGL

Okay, *now* I'm really paying attention to Pikaslice. I just tried slicing a full Jupiter build plate in Chitu Pro -- took a bit over 1 minute with volume calculation on and *2 seconds* with it off. This seems to be almost purely a GPU thing. With volume calculations on, the CPU was doing most of the work, with it off it was purely the GPU (I've got a 3080 in my desktop machine). I'd bet Pikaslice is also relying very heavily on the GPU, and doing the sorts of operations that the IPad is more optimized for on top of that.

I've even done a clean Uninstall and reinstall. The other issue is on every print the first 25mm the print is fuzzy, almost like it was printed using out of focus layers. That issue happens on all slicers. There are no failures, shifts or anything that would indicate a z axis issue, just appearance. It's far past the transition layers, the Feb isn't getting stuck, and it happens with all types of resin. It's not bubbles as sometimes I've kept the resin overnight before printing.

Chitu got issues, is suspecting that it got hardware or software dependency issues. Have the right setup and it will be smooth sailing, have the wrong one and every day will be Friday the 13th. Switched to Lychee and everything just works.

Really strange this, I'm using Chitu Pro 1.2.0, only just got the Mars 3 three months ago, and I can honestly say that I have never had a file fail to slice, crashes yer a few but never not written a file, I mean in honesty this time comparison seems a little pointless, I am really interested to see what the prints look like from each slicer, to see if there is a real reason to use one over the other because honestly 30 seconds difference when writing a file that's going to take 3 hours to print? not really a big deal, since you can be doing that while the printer is running. But still Thanks for the info and I'm looking forward to more in this comparison series as the best results are what I'm looking for at the end of the day.

You're on laptops...If the software wasn't designed for multithread, then you probably need a high speed single thread CPU, get on an i9 12th gen CPU with 5ghz and a GPU to redo this test. The RAM and HDD storage doesn't matter for this application. It will be CPU speed & maybe GPU 10:29

I've never had any issue with Chitubox. Its got to be a hardware issue for you. Also, Lychess slicer showing ads in the free version is exactly why i dont use it. Ads suck, and i dont have time to watch them. I also do not trust that Pikaslice based solely on the file size. Its exporting at lower resolution, and a paid slicer, as shown here, is not always a good slicer.

Haven’t finished the vid, but I’m going to guess the iPad Slicer wins. Those iPads are monstrously powerful and optimized for what they are (and if the app devs take advantage of it, it can give insane performance - just look at what some of the video editing apps can manage lol…) I doubt those “desktop” slicers are optimized for great multithreaded performance. I switched over from Chitubox when I noticed my Ryzen 9 5900X was HARDLY being utilized during slicing lol. Shameful really. Seemed very single-core dependent.

Your issue with chitu is you're saving first. Slice first then save it. It will also slice faster this way. So your results are not really accurate.

I don't know why my results with Lychee are so much slower. I use a super fast computer, and with Lychee slicing the same plate (11 files at 20micron, 4352 total lines) I get a total 4 minutes, 1.5 seconds on Lychee. The exact same files and settings with Chitubox Pro take 65 seconds if calculating resin and only 2.4 SECONDS if not calculating resin (I don't use Lychee often so I couldn't find out how to turn off resin calculation for that software). Part of the reason I don't use Lychee is that it's SOOOO slow. Adding stl files, arranging, adding supports, slicing, it all seems to take 10 times longer than Chitubox or Chitu Pro. Maybe it uses cloud computing instead of utilizing hardware? Either way, it's completely unusable to me. I run a print shop and regularly print files for machines as large as the Jupiter at 0.02mm and if it takes longer than 30 seconds to slice, I'm losing money.

Yeah, but it's a starting point for the video series on comparing the slicers. And 7mins vs 2 mins vs 30 seconds is pretty big in terms of slicing times
@SaschaUncia
@SaschaUncia 2 жыл бұрын
Hmm.. Alright, that makes more sense then. I still think it could mislead newbies if viewed alone out of context, but it's still a useful metric. I've been using Lychee since beta. I found chitu slow, but it also crashed an inordinate amount and generated a lot of stray pixels in the final slice. Lychees 2D hollowing and non-destructive holes are also really useful.

@@UncleJessy Hi, I can trink a coffee while the slicer is working, overall 7minutes of a 5000 layer print is relatively insignificant. To me the most important point is not having to waste a print due to bad supporting. Lychee 4 already disappointed me here, autosupports are still not supporting every island, autosupports still remove manually placed supports. Chitu free island detaction is a great catastrophe. Thanks for answering and have a great evening.

Ok, PC vs IPAD. Different processors and OS. So... yea Mac is faster, but not paying for an IPad Gen5 tablet for the speed of a new slicer. Odd, I have never had the chitubox lockup like he described on my free version. These do run like crap on laptops due to the GPUs and slower CPUs. On my Dell Desktop with Nvidia card and 32 gb, it runs fine. On my Dell laptop, I get the same issues he has on my mars and saturns. Slow and locks up. Saturn 2 arrives tomorrow, so we will see how it does.

It might be worth considering whether the slicers can be used without an internet connection. It's not going to be a problem often, but there are times where it could be. I imagine that Pikaslice and Chitubox don't require an internet connection, but Lychee probably does--for the ads.

@8:45 if you don't want to watch a 10 minute video for a 10 second answer. And he doesn't actually cover the ones that he has logos for in the clickbait video thumbnail -- he just handwaves excuses as to why he didn't use them. When it doesn't matter if he has the printers for them or not - because we're just asking about SLICING times. So the excuse about "oh, we can't use prusaslicer because it's only usable on prusa printers"...is a shallow one. Same goes for the Vlare.
