From a Catholic Revert. I made my Baptism and Penance when I was younger but never Communion or Confirmation. I started RCIA last September and made my sacraments during the Easter vigil 2023. It was the happiest day of my life. I'm going to miss the discussions and the classes, it was the best and we discussed everything that got me into my faith. I encourage everyone who finished RCIA to learn more as it's like the tip of the iceberg and our faith is so HUGE! Since it's literally everything. Anyway it's nothing like CCD we did when we were younger(I messed around in ccd when I was younger) RCIA is so much more!

I’m thinking of taking RCIA/OCIA. I’m Episcopalian and it’s hard to think of taking the course. I love my Church. But, I’m drawn to Catholicism. Some of my extended family is Roman Catholic.

God bless you in your journey of discernment. What do you find hard in thinking of attending OCIA? Typically churches start their programs in the fall so you have time to ask around at a local parish and learn what to expect before hand.

I thought you meant that you had some apprehension about OCIA itself, but it's understandable that it would be hard to think of how difficult it would be to have to leave a community of people you love - even if you're still able to visit frequently, it is true that it wouldn't be quite the same if you had a new 'home church'. It's worth knowing that going to OCIA can be just for educating yourself about the Catholic Church for most of it's duration without committing to join, so if you're open to pursue truth wherever you find it and follow Christ wherever He leads you, I'd encourage you to keep asking questions and look into it to see what it has to offer you.

I was confirmed after going through OCIA three weeks ago. I must admit, I was a bit disappointed about not coming into the Church at the Vigil; in my head that's how I'd always envisioned it going (a lesson from God to me about his timing and plans I suppose!) Our bishop started requiring that only catechumens come into the Church at the Vigil and Candidates (like myself) at another date. His reasoning was that early in Church history, only catechumens came into the Church at the Vigil. Still thrilled to be Catholic and it was a beautiful day, I just thought that was interesting.

I am currently attending RCIA. I haven’t heard anything about OCIA. I have to say I really love it, there is 13 of us and everyone is very nice and we all are on similar paths. Our deacon is awesome and answers all of our questions regardless of how crazy they sound. I don’t want it to end.

OCIA is RCIA. From what I could find, it was changed around 2021, but I'm sure it'll take a long time (or maybe never) for everyone to start using the new term.

I was just confirmed a Catholic a few weeks ago after almost 49 years as a Protestant. I am so glad I did! Protestantism is made up of thousands of denominations and non-denominations, all believing something a little different about how to live the Christian life. The Rule of Life in the Catholic Church is ancient, and has more or less remained stable for 2,000 years. We had so many adult converts in our diocese that the Bishop had to hold three Rites of Election at the Basilica in St. Augustine...there wasn't room for everyone to do only one. God is calling Protestants to stop protesting and return to the unity of the Catholic Church.

Amen.....I'm 41, went to a Baptist Church, their school from k-12 and just started reading and researching the first christians. Did they hide this from us? Lol Feels like it. Now I don't think some of my pastors hid it. They weren't taught. Couldn't have been. Anyway. I partied and ran from our precious Savior JESUS CHRIST for about 15 years. I thought I had come home a few years ago when I came back to CHRIST. I thank our Father for this encouraging message as I travel the rest of the way home to the fullness of the faith.

I’m in RCIA!! I’m so humbled to be a part of this journey! I’m so impatient for communion! I feel so separated from Christ and the holy Eucharist is a long desire of mine! I’m baptized and just was able to revive the sacrament of reconciliation and I’m so blessed! Narrow is the road! I will say that learning and studying is all part of the journey. If the emphasis is on the holy Eucharist and a adult is baptized keeping them out of Union with Christ body and blood doesn’t make sense to me. There is so much to learn about the faith I don’t believe anyone can study it all in an entire lifetime.

I start my OCIA program in September, so excited! My husband is sponsoring me and we are both so excited! I was confirmed into the Lutheran church when I was a child, yes you have to take a classes for a few years to be confirmed and receive communion. There are many benefits to taking classes, you can learn so much about your faith. It really is valuable and you get to meet new people and share that journey with them. It’s good in so many ways! I have no issue with the classes, I think it’s necessary

Im a protestant here, I never been baptized b4. I'll be getting my driver's license soon, to start OCIA classes soon... Im the only one in my protestant family to see the truth of the Catholic Church in history... My family r deep anti-catholic, & hate the Pope they think he is the Antichrist 😢... Our only convert was a catechumen that appeared to be in her early 20s. So, it was called RCIC if you were under 18 but older than the age of reason. However, I was 28 when I enrolled in RCIA and was confirmed at 29 (I was baptized as a Baptist and they accepted it as it was Trinitarian). Since I have been received into the Church, 2020 is the only year they haven't had other converts (mostly one but one year it was one catechumen and one candidate).

As a cradle catholic I have recently thought about attending RCIA classes just to become more knowledgeable about the faith. I come across those who converted often who just have an extended knowledge and passion for the faith.

All the OCIA classes I have ever found in 3 states are all held at night. I cannot drive at night, with night vision problems. Went to RCIA classes until it became too dark which gave me 1 month of classes. I loved class, but became too frustrated to continue. Decided to attend an Episcopal church and finally be able to receive communion.

I will say, when Jesus told the original disciples to follow Him...He was there IN PERSON. It's a lot easier to follow someone you can see in the flesh and hear auditorily. If the 12 struggled with Jesus RIGHT THERE, how much more we who go only on faith need help to prepare and understand. I love the idea of RCIA and overall the way Catholicism values making sure people know how serious joining the church is. Many people I know (they're mostly free will baptists) preach "believe (feel good feelings about Jesus), get baptized, and it'll fall into place," but especially before baptism, you should understand the covenants you're making. You are making ETERNAL commitments. As someone who has been brainwashed to believe Catholicism is satanic (and a detail-loving autistic history nerd), I really long to learn as much as possible because since doing my own research and attending a daily mass, I truly think Catholicism has it correct. And that mass was the first time I have felt peace in so long. I was even able to close my eyes for more than 3 seconds without having a panic attack.

The classes are basically making sure you know what you are getting into. The Church wants to make sure understand what you are accepting before you receive Jesus in the Eucharist. The Church does not want to mislead people into the faith

One can say that we both worship a single all powerful God, but our beliefs about how this God interacts with his creation is drastically different. I would probably let it go and bring the topic up with the priest of that parish and get his thoughts on the subject. OCIA instructors are not infallible and are still learning like all of us. Also, try googling the topic from reliable Catholic sources; I find Catholic Answers website extremely helpful in all topics related to Catholic apologetics.

A lot of your assumptions about Protestant churches are wrong. Actually the majority of Protestant churches do conduct membership or preparatory classes for people intending to join their congregations. These people will include new converts as well as Christians intending to transfer their memberships from other denominations and even from the same denomination but in a different locality. The duration of these courses will vary according to the denomination and church, and will usually range from a few weeks to a few months. In my case, the course consisted of weekly sessions over 6 months although I have been a Christian for 2 decades. The end of the course culminates in either baptism (for new converts), confirmation (for those baptized as infants and now wanting to commit their adult lives as Christians) or being presented in person to the congregation (for existing Christians from other churches or denominations). The end of this course does not mean the end of the spiritual learning and growth of these new members. Besides attending weekly services and listening to the sermons at church, everyone is highly encouraged to attend Bible study sessions within smaller units of the congregation living in the same locality known as cell groups, where they are taught the Scriptures in greater detail for the strengthening of their faith and Christian living. The rest of our spiritual learning experience will come from being personally taught and guided by the Holy Spirit who illuminates the hearts and minds of believers and grants them the wisdom and discernment to understand Scriptures in a way that no human teachers are capable of doing.

@@miracles_metanoia it will really depend on the specific practices of the denomination that you are joining. The first church that I joined when I became a Christian was a Baptist church. They had an interview session with me. They asked me about my background, and then proceeded to go through the articles of faith alongside the relevant Bible verses. After each of the article of faith was mentioned , they asked me if I affirmed it. Once I had affirmed all of them, the session was over and after a moment of prayer, I could leave. The following month, my name was submitted to the congregation during their monthly meeting to be approved. God has entrusted the church with the duty and responsibility to make it as simple and straightforward for Christians to join, worship and serve in the church. In all of the churches that I have joined so far (Baptist, Lutheran and Methodist), no candidates are "failed" or "disqualified due to insufficient works, merits or points". The course is designed in such as way that everyone who goes through it will be accepted as members at the end of the course.

My daughter who is 18 and i are lutheran( catholic lite lol) becoming catholic right now, wierd thing father jim said because i was baptized (the catholics accept 3 baptisims, catholic obviously, lutheran and angelican) i dont really have to anything but go to mass and he even said to come up for communion, i guess because we made or first communions and as lutherans we also believe in transubstantiation. Then yes next easter we will profess our faith with rcia. He said there is a lot of angelicans and lutherans in his congregation. I find that so interesting because us lutherans and agelicans are essentially catholic, but still want to go back to the one true church.

But in Acts- weren’t the apostles and believers already baptized before the intensive 3 years of theological training? and before they set up the church as an institution? Obviously believers already heard the gospel and agreed to it and repented you can say that was before baptism of course but it doesn’t seem like the apostles required you to go thru a formal program with a sponsor determining if you were worthy or not to be counted among the elect. And why does the Catholic Church wait until Easter for baptizing, can’t we just baptize once someone proclaims Christ just like the apostles did? Doesn’t RCIA have you train and determine your worthiness BEFORE you’re baptized? Unless I’m misunderstanding something. Obviously we want to train and educate but why does that need to come before, isn’t that the point of coming to church once you are saved/baptized? To continue to educate and edify yourself? These are honest questions. I’ve been reading through the catechism and council of Trent but when I compare to the work of the apostles I have questions.

Check TruthBTolle comment in this thread. It's not in the Bible,but Jesus said it was essential to be baptised in Matt:28. In Acts God breathed on them and in them the Holy Spirit during Pentecost to baptize others and do miracles. I think the Catholic church baptizes at Easter because as Jesus was resurrected and is alive so is the new convert arisen in new life and alive in the church. RCIA: Is the training and classes that you do to learn about Catholicism's traditions and beliefs and how to be at church OCIA:Is the conversion of a non Christian to the denomination of Catholicism.

Rather than the Baptism, as a Catholic, receiving the Eucharist is what we all must prepare ourselves for. For converts, their first communion comes immediately after the baptism, at the same mass. Hardly enough time to Catechize them before receiving the body of Christ. RCIA prepares them for that.

What exactly is expected of you in RCIA? I'm confused sing nobody wants to call it a program or course, but I'm curious if we're expected to read out loud and what not? I have dyslexia coupled with an anxiety disorder, but I am a little worried that I'm going to be expected to do some reading aloud. I'm naturally a slow reader and fumble a bit when reading on my own to begin with, but with my anxiety on top of that for reading allowed, I can sorta come off as if I don't really know how to read well

Yes.. Jesus gave the VERY JEWISH LEADERS of His church 3 years of exegesis ,because they were meant to teach, lead , and ordain others to spread and build. No other group after had to go through YEARS of training to be accepted into the church as a member. In Acts the 2nd chapter 3,000 people were counted members in ONE day after ONE sermon! Unfortunately, due to the many schisms within Christianity…and the MANY ways in which Roman Catholic beliefs differ from Protestant beliefs - RCIA was established in 1972 so that people who wanted to become Catholic would be fully versed in what that means theologically…and be able to decide (with knowledge) if it’s still something they want to be a part of. If we never had the schisms in Christianity and the Roman Catholic Church remained as the *only* Christian church….we wouldn’t need it.

Your mileage, with regard to RCIA, may vary. I went through the program at my local parish, where I was taught several falsehoods about Catholic teaching, and several important things were not mentioned. Catholicism isn't what I signed up for, and tbh, I want out. Raising the issue with a priest, he told me I can't leave, it's not possible to leave, I'm bound to your canon law for eternity. 😢

@randycarson9812 We were taught that women could be priests and probably would be one day, and that a married couple using contraception was just being responsible. For a couple of examples. We weren't taught correctly about Marian devotion or days of obligation.

Another issue is that I didn't choose RCIA in the first place, my well-meaning wife nagged, badgered and threatened me into going. I can recognize that there are many good people in Catholicism, many positive things, but in my case it's like the legal concept of fruit of the poison tree.

Did anyone out there learn about the "treasury of merit" or indulgences in RCIA? I didnt hear them in my classes, read about them in Catechism- didnt join.

They were covered in RCIA for me, but your experience speaks to Lizzie's arguement that RCIA/OCIA shouldn't be shorter but arguably could be longer because if you're only meeting once a week there's a lot of topics to cover even sticking to a surface level.

I don't really follow your logic on this. Am I suggesting a person should not learn about Christ, or the bible? Of course not however I don't quite get the time delay? What if a person dies in the meantime never having committed to Christ? Oh well? You win some you lose some? How about the thief on the cross who prayed Lord remember me when you come into your kingdom, notice he didn't have time to sign up for catechism class. Or how about when Peter preached in the book of acts 2:37-41 "what must we do to be saved" Petr did not sign them up for classes, they simply told them to repent and believe on the lord Jesus and be baptized". Notice three thousand souls were added that day without the benefit of special classes. The Apostle Paul also was asked by a jailer supervising him what must we do to be saved to which Paul responded Acts 16"29-30 "The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas 30 He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” Did Paul respond you must take catechism classes for two years? Or did he respond Acts 16:31 31 "They replied, Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and your household.” 32Then Paul and Silas spoke the word of the Lord to him and to everyone in his house. 33 At that hour of the night, the jailer took them and washed their wounds. And without delay, he and all his household were baptized.… There was no delay for someone who wanted salvation. I'm not suggesting a person take their faith lightly or frivolously however you see we need to take care we are not teaching men a bunch of man made rules and traditions of men which Jesus considered an obstacle. And He said, “Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! For ye laden men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. Luke 11:46 Here Jesus was speaking to the religious lawyers of the Torah who had multiple rules for people to keep and even criticized Jesus for when he healed on the Sabbath. So we always need to be on guard against learning men's traditions and rules which are not required by law. There is no genuflecting, prayers to Mary, no earning our salvation no membership in a denomination that saves us. Salvation comes from God's mercy when we did not deserve it and there is nothing we can do to earn it or Christ's death was in vein and it is not granted by taking a catechism class but by repenting from our sins and believing Jesus died for our sins.

In the early Church of the first and second centuries, the catechumenate typically lasted for a period of two to three years. This period of instruction and formation was designed to prepare converts for baptism and full membership in the Christian community. Why would the disciples of Peter, James, John and Paul have taken such a long time to prepare someone to enter the Church?
